Atheneum has bought The Very, Very Far North by Dan Bar-el. Pitched as a contemporary Winnie-the-Pooh, the middle grade novel features a polar bear named Duane who is finding his place in the world. Kelly Pousette will illustrate; publication of the first volume is set for fall 2019.

This book is extremely charming. The characters are gentle and pleasant, and it would be a perfect read aloud, or as an early independent reading book for a child starting in on chapter books. It's certainly reminiscent of Winnie the Pooh, and I enjoyed it very much.

Duane the polar bear is quite curious. In addition to his two favorite activities, eating and napping, Duane enjoys a good adventure. Oh, and giving names to the new friends he meets. He's really good at giving names. Upon his adventures, Duane meets a variety of new friends in the far, far north: a snowy owl, a musk ox, an arctic fox, a puffin, a caribou, and some humans.
