This thriller by Saul Black (Glen Duncan) is an urbane and muscular novel which is pretty much Black’s style. In addition to being a “who-dun- it”, the main character’s past collides with her present bringing into question her future. Self-loathing aside, I think it is difficult for a male author to effectively write about sex or sexual considerations from a feminine perspective. Being purely subjective, it seems to me that Valerie Hart’s thoughts about sex and her sexuality are derived from a d ...more

No way. Crude, nasty and offensive. Reminds me of a bad 70's movie. DNF

I've never read this author and if this is a sample of all his work, I don't think I ever will.

Thanks (I guess!) to Netgalley for the advanced galley. Opinion is strictly mine.

I received a free e-copy of Anything For You (Valerie Hart #3) by Saul Black from NetGalley for my honest review.

I tried like heck to finish this book since I requested it. I just can't do it. It is very crude and sexually disgusting for my taste.

I did not finish it.

This was such of good suspense-murder-mystery!

Valerie Hart is a wonderfully imperfect, cynical homicide detective.
Detective Hart does not see the world through rose coloured glasses, if anything nothing surprised her anymore and she often expects the worst out of people.
That's what being the Police for so long has done to this investigator.

A murder mystery like no other forged with sex, lies, and deceit.
The M.O. is written on the wall but it's up to Valerie to uncover the truth now that Adam has passed away.
Adam was a prominent prosecutor and lived a life that many envied but did his wife and daughter truly know the real Adam?
Adam seems to have lived a 'double life' one that made him prime suspect but perhaps this is a 'revenge killing' from an ex con he locked up.
A sexy blonde holds many of the answers and

I think this was not a bad mystery or "whodunit" book.  It was a big case and I think there were some great twists and turns in it for me.  The author goes into detail in the book, so this book is for adults only in my opinion.  I still enjoyed this book for the most part.  Valerie Hart is a good character for a detective.  "This book was given to me for free at my request from NetGalley and I provided this voluntary review."

I received this advance copy from St. Martin's Press via a Goodreads giveaway. Many thanks to both of them for a nice surprise that also turned out to be an awesome read.

This psychological thriller begins with the violent murder of a respected attorney. His wife is badly injured but survives the attack. The case seems to be an easy slam-dunk for Detective Valerie Hart, but there are some nagging questions and pieces that don't fit. Hart's relentless search for evidence and motive tur

A murder investigation turns into three cases.

A mixture of spiritual and demonic, the murderer used a symbol on the chests of the victims.

Valeria Hart in investigating officer finds evidence of a mysterious blonde who, she thinks she knows.

The details were shocking.

Anything for You by Saul Black
This book was different, there was quite a bit of sex, murder, and a twist that being said it was an interesting read if you don't mind the sex and can get around some of the language, which I did and the mystery underneath it was something I didn't see coming at first but I feel as I should have! Story flows and characters are interesting even if I didn't like some of them. Thank you Netgalley and the Publishers St. Martin's Press for this ARC!
A smart and robust thriller from Saul Black, Anything For You is the third novel in his Valerie Hart series. My favourite of these – by far – is his debut, The Killing Lessons, which was creepy, atmospheric and crazy good at building tension.

In Anything For You, Valerie is investigating what, at first glance, is your standard issue home invasion. High flying attorney Adam Grant is found – stabbed and bludgeoned in his bed. On the floor next to him is his wife, Rachel, clinging to life after a stab

Usually I can read anything and enjoy it, but I will say this book has some triggers including rape and sexual abuse. I personally don’t really need to hear the graphic details, but if you like things more explicit you will enjoy this book. I’ve always thought that great writers can use more than vulgarity to describe a story, and this book definitely overuses the word “cunt”.

Anything For You has sex, lies, murder, and a great twist. A San Francisco prosecutor is murdered and his wife is left b

Boring, unengaing, painful are just a few of the words I would use to describe this book. It is a dull soft porn book masquerading as a crime novel. One can figure out in the first half of the book who done it, but the author drags out the second half to te point that it is a good book for anyone suffering from insomina ( as a couple characters in the book). As it has received a number of favorable reviews it is obviously appealling to some, but I found it an utter waste of time.

This was my first ARC and I was so excited to receive it. However it feel short. I loved the idea of the book, the story line was there. I somehow still struggled to get through it though. I cannot say it wasn't a good story.. but something about the way it was written didn't have me turning pages until the wee hours of the night. Some parts are also pretty vulgar. I do not mind this but other reads might, so heads up tp that. Over all it was a great story, not written in a way that captivated m ...more

4-5 stars, but probably not for everyone! The more disturbing, the more I love the book, and while not disturbing exactly this one has lots of crudeness and sex. If you like the raunchier and racier books, then grab this one! Very fast paced and hard to put down!
Will let the members of Chapter Chatter Pub know about it’s upcoming release!

I like a good mystery but didn't like all the violence and sex. I know it was trying to give background to the character but I prefer it being less graphic. The suspense was good and trying to figure out who actually killed Adam Grant and why kept me reading.

I received this advance copy from St. Martin's Press via a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. I am very excited to include this book along with the other two of my Valerie Hart books by Saul Black that I own in my library. Thank you so much! I will be reading the series very soon.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an eARC of this novel!

While I don't have many mystery series that I follow as each book comes out, there are a few exceptions. One of those exceptions is the Valerie Hart Series by Saul Black, which follows a hardened and complicated San Francisco detective as she solves dark and disturbing murders. I really like Valerie as a protagonist, and in THE KILLING LESSONS and LOVEMURDER she gets to be complicated and complex as well as savvy and

When a well-known Francisco prosecutor is found murdered in his bedroom next to his wife, who is clinging to life, his connection to Homicide Detective Valerie Hart brings her face-to-face with her past. As evidence points to an ex-con as the murderer, Valerie uncovers clues that point to a more ominous direction including a mysterious blonde woman who holds the key to a darker story.

An intruder breaks into their home, killing Adam, a well-known prosecutor, and leaves Rachel clinging for her life, while their daughter, Elspeth, is staying at a friends house. Homicide detective, Valerie Hart, steps in to help solve the case, but also has a history with the murder victim that she can’t let impact the case.

Just like any good series crime novel, the books starts with a shocking murder. The police come to investigate and while we think we know what the situation is, it quickly changes. Because everyone has a past or secrets they keep. And often times, just as in real life, someone does not just get murdered. Without there being something sinister lurking just below the surface.
Anything for You starts out with different scenes from crimes that I found a hard time piecing together at first. And

Anything For You by author Saul Black is anything but forgettable! The plot of the story is brilliant! This is the third in a series featuring Detective Valerie Hart. Although I have not read the preceding two books, I found this book to be easy to follow as a stand-alone novel. The story begins with the murder of a prominent attorney - Adam Grant. His wife is also harmed in the incident, but she is able to call 911. Detective Valerie Hart is on the case. Valerie is back with her husband, Nick., and her personal life and professional life are not totally meshing at the time. Nick is wanting to try for a baby and Valerie is (in her mind) not quite as certain as is Nick.

I struggled on what star rating to give this book. Sometimes the writing annoyed me and I felt that there were unnecessary parts that were meant to lead be astray, which they did, but they also didn't add to the story at all. Anything for You starts out with a somewhat erotic and gruesome murder. Gotcha! In the midst of mystery and a gritty story line, Saul Black weaves a story of murder and crime suspense. There is a sub-story of Valerie, the detective assigned to the case that is also interesting.

Black does well with his characters - well developed and believable. There is an alternate story also that blends in the murder and fooled me quite well into thinking one way only
