Almost science fiction but maybe in a few years, this will be fact. A girl stays behind on board ship as she's not well, and before her twin sister and mum can return, the cruise ship has been hijacked. Once we learned about the plans for an increased number of people coming aboard I intuited that climate refugees would be in the mix, from an island suffering from sea level rise. Much to enjoy here although admittedly, I didn’t like this title quite as much as Verity Croker’s previous ‘May Day Mine’, with its genuine gritty small-town feel. ‘Jilda’s Ark’ is a more fanciful book, a ‘what if’ set, I assume, in the near future when small Pacific nations are being overwhelmed by the rising seas caused by climate change.
