Having spent the last five years continuing to serve the Denraen, Endric feels the weight of a looming responsibility. He must choose how he will serve. Shame on Me
This is the second, and my last, series that I’ve read by this author. I continued to read this series because I enjoyed the first and expected the author to ‘turn this one around’. He didn’t and then remarks in his notes that he loves the MC and there’s more of this series’ MC — a privileged son, self-centered, arrogant, a snob and a drunkard — in at least another of his series.
Subplots drive the books in the series but the overriding plot line is the MC growing up to assume command of the army. And to throw salt on the wound, we(reader) never get a final resolution on most of the subplot issues, ‘mysteries’ that drive each of the books. The series plot is a coming of age for a grown man who matures from a whiny drunk, arrogant, self-centered and a snob to a self-centered, still but not as arrogant snob. And after 2,000 pages, he’s now ready to take his father’s place as general of an elite army.
The MC has friends, but I don’t know how. We’re told, often enough, that he has an aura, or something, where he gets, commands respect and loyalty….blah, blah. Makes friends easily and most will follow him. Author introduces a number of interesting characters…..and he drops them. Some continue in cameo but most just become words despite the reader, possibly wanting more.
It takes a little more than teaching soldiers fighting techniques — MC was pushed to it n also bored,something to do — to EARN their respect and loyalty. Yea, teach an army individually the fighting techniques they need by sparring with a few nightly.
Six books, roughly two thousand pages, and I don’t recall an instance where he consistently made his soldiers, and his friends, feel that he truly cared about them. An instance here and there, but waking up and walking around, checking on his troops nightly…..nope. Talk to them about their families, backgrounds, their capabilities and them possibly doing something significant to help and assist….Nope. But he’s got that aura.
Author may know martial arts but he doesn’t know, understand military. Character driven, military fantasy and I’d think a little research woulda helped, everything considered.
If not for KU, I would have stopped by book 3. I admit to a bit of skimming. I kept believing…nobody leaves their marginal MC still marginal through 6 books. Or do they? I Don’t recommend book, series and I’ve deleted authors samples so that I don’t run into this MC, and any like him, again.

~90% Good ending to a series I enjoyed.

The fact there's a five-year-gap between #5 and #6 means this one is a bit slower to start, especially as it sets up the fact that Endric is still reluctant to take the role his father would want him to take. Pendin's mother also gets a major role, being concerned by the silence from the historians - something that gets Endric's attention as he spent a lot of time with Novan during the series. As they set out, Endric is left to wonder who's actually planning what as Elizabeth and Novan have their own plans to approach the problem and Elizabeth would like to learn more of the historian's secrets - something Novan doesn't seem to like.
When they get closer to the presumed seat of the historian guild, Endric is separated from the rest again and the circumstances force him to delve into it alone, trying to untangle the web of strange things on the go - and eventually getting an unexpected help, as well as a chance to use his unique abilities.

Endric is a great tale.
The son that was meant to take over for his father. A lot of plot twists! The series is built piece by piece and hope to follow along in the next series.

Good series
I am sad to see it end. This is a great series and Endric has always been a favorite character of mine. I hope more is to come someday.
