American Predator is the story of Alaskan serial killer Israel Keyes, his crimes and how he was captured.

I was chatting with a friend when the subject of what I was currently reading came up. I mentioned this book and I began thinking about why I’m always drawn to true crime – specifically serial killers/mass murderers. I certainly don’t admire them nor do I particularly care why they do what they do. Then I realized that I like to see how they inevitably slip up; what is the tiny mistake they m

Wowsers. This is a true true crime book. I couldn't put it down. It's terrifying and so upsetting.

True crime has been a guilty pleasure of mine for at least 30 years…I remember working in a public library and happily discovering the 364.1523 shelves (where even today I still browse, although TBH public library budgets often prevent a lot of trashy ephemeral reading material from making it to the shelves). These days, true crime has become a pop culture THING, and there’s no shortage of readily available books, movies, and podcasts dedicated to what used to be very much a niche market. I was ...more

Bone chilling and spooky. I had never heard of Israel Keyes until this book. This guy was ipso facto cray cray. The methodology and intellect he used in carrying out his murders was shocking. The amount of blunders that happened in the case were also shocking. although not surprising given the ego involved with the lead prosecutor. This was a great and troubling story, but I'm glad Callahan told this story. Keyes definitely belongs in the annals of "legendary" serial killers.

Israel Keyes held a great many secrets that we’ll never learn. This book was great insight into a bit of his mind - but also made me so angry - I want to know so much more!

I received a free ARC of American Predator in a Goodreads giveaway, and was especially thrilled to win this particular book. I'm a longtime true crime fan with entirely too much interest in serial killers, so I couldn't wait to dive in to the story of Israel Keyes, a singular killer who revealed just how vulnerable we are to the predators we are unable or unwilling to understand. Callahan's research was thorough, ambitious and unflinching, providing a lot of the background detail I'd found missi ...more

Bone-chillingly brutal and absolutely un-put-down-able, American Predator by Maureen Callahan is a horrifying look through the eyes of a serial killer sure to terrify the toughest of readers. Meet the monster Israel Keyes, a creepy cross between Hannibal Lector and the charismatic Ted Bundy, who stashed kill kits across the country to feed his insidious desires. While eluding law enforcement for over 14 years, Keyes finds himself in custody facing his many crimes. Will the enigmatic Keyes give u ...more

Confession....I watch a lot of crime shows on tv. When I’m not reading, that is my go to time killer. I had heard of Israel Keyes, but not a lot, and usually just the same thing over and over. American Predator did an excellent job of filling in all the blanks. How could someone’s evilness reach so many different places? The amount of planning that this monster put into his crimes boggles the mind. Excellent research by Maureen Callahan!

More of a 3.5. Part of the problem is the way the story ends (this isn't the author's fault), but I came away thinking there was so much more that could be said about all of the people involved in the investigation (and the family of the killer) that might have shed more light on what happened.

A well-researched study of the interactions among individuals from separate law enforcement agencies as they track down a murderer, later discovered to be a serial killer.
