Erma Louise Bombeck, born Erma Fiste, was an American humorist who achieved great popularity for a newspaper column that depicted suburban home life humorously, in the second half of the 20th century.
For 31 years since 1965, Erma Bombeck published 4,000 newspaper articles. Already in the 1970s, her witty columns were read, twice weekly, by thirty million readers of 900 newspapers of USA and Canada. Besides, the majority of her 15 books became instant best sellers.
In 1984 she wrote me, "I have always felt that the homemakers of this country have no reason to feel any less a professional because they sort socks and take static electricity out of underwear. Don't anyone tell me what women can or cannot do once they've made up their minds. Remember, I've seen them at the January white sales!" She wished me continued success ... and next time she wrote, "Dear Mary ... I'm still on a treadmill... Face it -we're compulsive" She warned up and coming young people if they stayed home to raise babies and not miss anything, they faced "a 119-hour-a-week job and in the end, your kids actually thank you for being there --- 20 years later." We lost Erma in April 1996. We will NEVER lose her encouraging words and hilarious wisdom.
I read these books so long ago, so many times. Ms. Bombeck's writing always made me laugh and the same still holds true, despite these writings being more geared to my mother than me.
While I agree the writing is somewhat dated, it's still funny and I needed this humor right now.
Three books in one with great vignettes on family life to make my smile. I didnt get maybe half of the jokes due to my age (born in 1983) but could relate to so many child rearing observations.
I've read this book 3 times. LOVE. One of my FAVORITE books ever. It is hilarious and always has me laughing out loud over and over again. I recommend it to anyone who has children, or a husband. I hope I get the chance to meet Erma Bombeck in the next life!
Very short and funny compilation of some of the best of Erma Bombeck's writing. Laugh out loud funny, even though a few bits are a little dated (set in the 1970's).
I like Erma Bombeck, however, this is very dated. People born in the 50s would relate to subjects in this book, as the kids. Written as an adult born in the 20s or 30s.
