Bear needs to hibernate, and Mouse tries to get him to stay, and so the story gores.
The message is bear does need to hibernate he won't stop doing that, he will miss his friend but he has to do what he has to do,
Sometimes you need to do things even if that means being absent from your friend, it doesn't mean you can't be friends it just means that there are things you need to do.
A well crafted little story with lesson to remember.

In this book, we meet Bear and his friend, Mouse. Bear wants to sleep because it is so cold and Mouse is hurt because wants to play in the snow with his friend.

"'My little friend,' Bear explained, 'please understand. a bear needs to sleep all winter long.'"

This is a lovely story, intended for children in kindergarten through second grade about activities to do during the winter and it validates one's feelings about missing a friend.

This book is about a bear and a mouse that are friends. The mouse starts saying how it is starting to get cold and the bear starts yawning and saying how he can feel that winter is now approaching. Bear gets up and says goodnight to the mouse and how he is going to sleep the whole winter and the mouse didn’t understand. He was so bummed because bear would miss out on all the fun winter activities. Mouse brings up that Bear is going to miss sleigh rides in the snow, hot chocolate in a steaming cups, ice skating on a frozen lake, and snowmen with carrot noises, but all bear keeps saying is that he doesn’t care and all bear wants to do is sleep. Then Bear explains to mouse that bears have to sleep all winter long but told mouse to wake him up in the spring time when the flowers start blooming.

Wake Me up in Spring is a delightful little book to read to young children. The interaction between two friends, a bear and a mouse, takes the sadness of being separated from a good friend and then joy of reuniting in a very simple and sweet way. You could also introduce the vocab word hibernate.

Learning Experience:
I would read the story to the children using a bear and mouse puppet. After the book I would leave the puppets out in the reading center and let the children act out the book using their puppets. Another lesson using the book could be talking about hibernation, introducing the term and what it means, talking about the foods a bear gathers up in preparation for the winter. Ex. Berries, honey nuts, and fish.

Bear is getting ready for winter but his dear friend Mouse doesn't want him to go! The book shows all of the things in winter that Bear will be missing as Mouse tries to get him to stay. The friendship between the mouse and the bear is heartbreakingly beautiful. Truly. It made me quite happy. Also, this is a book that learning readers will easily be able to read themselves which will add confidence.
