The reader's 11th return to Mayville Heights finds librarian Kathleen Paulson organizing a quilt festival, hosting her brother Derek as his band - The Flaming Gerbils - plays gigs at The Brick and teaches songwriting workshops, and enjoying life with friends who are artists, bakers, tai chi instructors, and (quiet daytime library worker demeanor notwithstanding) exotic dancers. The Gerbils have a fine new musician, Derek Hansen, Fern's Diner still has the best meatloaf in town, and Georgia's pea ...more

I loved this book! I finished this book in one day, which is something I rarely ever do, but I could not put this book down. This is a perfect example of cozy mystery at it's best. The writing was so smooth and the characters and vibrant and lovable. The story flowed at the perfect pace, without any thinking in circles that can sometimes happen in a mystery. And magical cats! Need I say more?!

Kathleen is a head librarian at the Mayville Heights Free Public Library in Minneapolis. She has wonderf

A Night’s Tail by Sofie Kelly is the eleventh A Magical Cats Mystery and a joy to read. I like the author’s casual and engaging writing style. I was quickly drawn into this cute cozy mystery with librarian, Kathleen Paulson and her two magical cats, Hercules and Owen. The beginning with Mary is hysterical (I do not want to spoil it for you). Kathleen’s brother, Ethan is visiting town with his band, The Flaming Gerbils. The group recently lost one of its members to art school, so Derek Hanson has ...more

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Great Escapes Book Tours. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

A Night's Tail by Sofie Kelly is a terrific story about family, friends, lies, and judgment all with a side of murder.

Why would anyone want to kill Lewis Wallace?

Thanks to the First to Read Program for an ARC of this book. The following is my honest review:

I have to wonder if I would have enjoyed this book more if I would have started at the beginning of the series. At a minimum, it probably couldn't have hurt to be more familiar with the characters and their history. With that said, this book could still be read as a stand alone.

This is a quick, easy read. Kathleen is a librarian with 2 magical cats, Owen and Hercules. What makes them magical? One has

In this continuation of the Magical Cats series, librarian Kathleen Paulson and her two feline sleuths, Owen and Hercules, look into the mysterious death of a businessman interested in opening a warehouse in the town of Mayville Heights, Minnesota.

I actually won another giveaway by Berkley Press, and they kindly sent me this free copy along with the one I actually won. The names Hercules and Owen sounds familiar, so I feel like I may have read the first one in this series, but other than that,

I wanted to like Sofie Kelly's latest Magical Cats Mystery as much as I did The Cats Came Back. But, the large cast of characters in A Night's Tail did me in. There were too many characters in the opening scene, and I never felt as if I caught up with them. However, fans of the series will want to catch up with librarian Kathleen Paulson and her two magical cats, Owen and Hercules.

A Night’s Tail was a “purr-fect” introduction to Sofie Kelly’s magical cats mystery series. Spring is arriving in librarian Kathleen Paulson’s small Minnesota town, but instead of the green promise of new life, this spring brings a dead body at the local hotel. Kathleen is first on the scene, so she gets involved in the ensuing investigation. The victim is the unlikable Lewis Wallace, who was in town to promote his real estate investments—investments which some in town found to be questionable. ...more

The question isn't so much who wanted to kill Lewis Wallace, rather who didn't or why did it take so long? The brusque former offensive NFL player offended people wherever he went and in so many ways. He was a womanizer, a business cheat and even such a mean drunk that he would kick a service dog belonging to a disabled veteran!

Kathleen and friends (plus her brother and a couple of magical cats) get involved to put this man in his place, which then puts one of them in the place of top suspect in

This turned out to be a light and easy read with a little bit of mystery, magic, and small-town charm. I actually expected the cats to have a bigger part in the plot beyond the typical cat antics, and the brief 'magical' ones didn't really feel all that necessary. I actually think it would play out better if they just happened to be regular cats. Of course, I'm getting into the series on book 11, so it might just be that I'm missing something from previous volumes to help it make sense.
And on th

"Night's Tail" is a cozy mystery. This is the 11th book in the series. You don't need to read the previous books to understand this one, and this book didn't spoil the mysteries in the previous books. The cats are intelligent and have cat abilities (disappearing and getting out of places) taken to a magical degree. Their actions drew attention to clues but mostly they provided humor with their antics.

It's a clue-based puzzle mystery. The heroine is intelligent and knows how to ask questions with

This series is new to me and there seemed to be quite a bit happening in Mayfield Heights.
Kathleen, the head librarian, is organizing a quilt show, while supporting her visiting brother, Ethan, and his band. There's a good sense of community and great friends in this cozy with, quite a bit of bantering between relatives and friends. Unfortunately in the midst of all the fun, banter and great friendships, someone is discovered dead in the town's hotel. Kathleen and her two interesting cats, Hercu

This series is the first I ever read where cats assisted the protagonist solve murders. I liked it right from the start because Hercules and Owen are so finely etched, they are completely believable as uncommonly intelligent and adorable felines. As all cozy writers know, having a setting and an indelible cast of characters can make or break a series. Sometimes the characters are always present, up close and personal, others are in the back wings making an appearance from time to time. This book ...more

A Night’s Tail by Soffie Kelly is a magical cats mystery and a charming murder mystery involving the town menace and three adorable, magical cats (Hercules, Owen and Micah). Somehow they magically disappear and walk straight through a door and aid their owners Kathleen and Marcus. The author did a great job of keeping you on the edge of your seat wondering who the real killer was until the very end. The only negative for me was I thought too much time was spent on the close sibling relationship ...more

This is the first book in this series that I have read, even though it's #11. I won a book from Goodreads, and the publisher sent this one as a bonus.
I enjoyed the story. The murder mystery was involved enough that I didn't guess the murderer. I kept getting characters mixed up because there were so many of them! However, I believe that if you read the series in order, you would know who all the characters are and their relationships; so that is my problem, not a problem with the book. It was in

Although I haven't read any of the other books in the series it was easy to catch on and jump right in. This was the first book in the series that I have read. I will have to find previous books to read. It was delightful. I was concerned about magical cats as a category, but it proved to add to the story. It was not over done. The characters were likeable and believable. The ending was a surprise and that makes any mystery worth reading.
