Reverse Beauty and the Beast retelling ? Yes, yes and yes!
This sounds promising. :)
This sounds promising. :)

I was lucky enough to get a chance to read CURSES early. You need to preorder it. You need to do that now. Drop what you are doing. Why are you still reading this? You should be preordering CURSES.
Done? Okay good.
You need this retelling of Beauty and the Beast in your life. It is smart, because Lish wrote it. It is also hilarious, because Lish wrote it. And Lish manages to take a classic fairy tale you know by heart and make it feel completely fresh and original. There is a curse support group. ...more

I, like many others, waited a long time for Curses.
It did not disappoint.
It was a clever re-imagining of a classic fairy tale, and was so expertly executed that it did in one book what other writers would have needed a series to accomplish.
I loved every character (except the intentionally awful ones) and when I finished I felt contented and delighted.
I loved this book. Also, I want a marar.

You know that feeling when an author you admire releases a new book you didn't realize was a thing? That's how I felt reading CURSES in two sittings (it could've been one but I started it at midnight). I think she's one of the most under appreciated authors in YA. She's not only a fabulous storyteller but her dialogue is SO FUNNY. This book was a delight, and I loved how seamlessly she integrated diverse characters without it being a big deal. The tropes are familiar, of course, but that's what

*I got my ARC from Edelweiss+ and this review was solely my own. Thank you to Edelweiss!*
Hands down one of the best Beauty and the Beast re-tellings I have read.
Merit Cravan makes her mother angry by not wanting to go to a betrothal party that was being held for her. In retaliation for her "beastly" behavior, a fairy ends up turning Merit into a beast and tells her she has until her 18th birthday to either be married by someone of her mother's choosing, or have someone fall in love with her.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Teen for sending me an E-ARC of this book for an honest review!
This book was SO CUTE! I didn't really know what to expect when going into it, all I knew was that it was a gender-bend retelling of Beauty and the Beast. But it was so much more!
I fell in love with all of the characters. Lish McBride is a fantastic writer. Her characters are all so well written, and HER DIALOGUE IS AMAZING! Each person in the story had such deep and diverse ch ...more

I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I'll be honest, I very nearly gave Curses by Lish McBride, 3 stars rather than 4. Part of that was my own preference - I'm not into comedy and silly hijinks. The other part, is because I feel this book just wasn't categorized right… or to be more precise, it didn't fit into any given category just right.

First of all, thanks to the publisher, author, and Edelweiss for giving me an ARC! I appreciate the opportunity to read this early!
This is definitely a 3.5 star book -maybe I should round up to 4, though, because I really did enjoy this book. The only thing that was a bit of a potential detraction was the world-building - and since that is such a big deal to books, I feel the need to drop the rating a bit. I quite enjoyed the reverse Beauty and the Beast theme of this book, and the sci-fi/fantas ...more

This book had it's moments for me of enjoyable and then written for a different audience. I liked the premise and the characters were mainly lovely as well. Most anything beauty and the beast is up my alley so I wanted to read this one. There were times it was a great historical almost-adult vibe book and then other times it was childish in writing and a little more middle-grade book. The humor and the fun make this book a lot more enjoyable than most which was a relief as well. It's not a serio

Merit has been cursed to live as a Beast until she marries either a man her mother has chosen or a man who loves her. But time is running out, and one way or the other she must marry soon!
Curses is a gender reversed Beauty and the Beast retelling with a fantastic cast of characters. The fantasy world set up leaves so much opportunity for later books, and I'll be intrigued to see if any are written!

A clever, genuine, and unique story of a handful of compelling characters daring to go against the demands and expectations forced upon them.
I loved the metaphors, and clever use of a plot that most are already familiar with from Beauty and the Beast.
100 percent worth the read. A wonderful, refreshing, fairytale twist.
Maybe this author will write more fairytale remakes...? (please write more!)

Beauty and the Beast is essentially a story of Stockholm Syndrome. (harsh, I know). I have some serious issues with fairytales in general. I maybe a Disney fan but I also understand that it's problematic.
