Dale Paul is the hedge fund whale, gambling away other people’s money for his own enrichment. As long as this delusion is shared – the same delusion that makes it possible for predatory capitalism to succeed – Dale Paul and his friends are living out another Gilded Age. However, charm and boarding school connections aren’t enough to save Dale Paul from jail time. When his ...more

Revolving as it does around a con man with a pompous turn of phrase, this is a highly relevant character study for our time. Dale Paul may or may not be a psychopath, may or may not be a compulsive dissembler, but whether he is or not his financial shenanigans are pretty much guaranteed to sow maximum havoc--and not just for other people but for himself as well. Readers up on their AmLit will enjoy the telling references--literary, geographic, and psychological--to The Great Gadsby and An Americ ...more

If you think that a novel about an amoral fraudster trying yet another con in a New York State prison is not your cup of tea, think again. Susan Swan's perceptive and amusing novel about the almost heartless Dale Paul made me think again about the men who dominate the news today as well as the mysteries of the human heart. Her cast of characters ranges from Dale Paul's rich Canadian family to illiterate convicts, as they illuminate his past and present. So much kept my interest alive here, espec ...more

Sadly, I am cutting bait on this title. Where The Wives of Bath and The Western Light both hold places in my heart as favoured novels, this title will never join them.

I am 66 pages in and I just so don’t care. Not about the characters. Not Dale Paul. Not Ted. Nor Meredith or Esther… or any of the other incidental characters populating this novel. Nor do I care about the story. Reading this is tedious. Pick up. Put down. Repeat.

Why stop here? Because Dale Paul’s son has just committed suicide (by

The novel is witty and very clever as we come to know Dale Paul. An unrepentant narcissist and fraudster in the banking industry, Dale Paul ends up in a minimum security jail for fleecing veterans of their pensions. He is unable to understand why people are angry at him, nor does he get why his son is ashamed of his last name. Dale Paul is accustomed to living large and sees his sins as nothing more than actions other people don’t understand. While in jail he sets up another sting with his Dead ...more

Susan Swan's new book, hot off the press, is The Dead Celebrities Club. I bought it at her launch
at Queen Books and have been deep into it ever since. I look forward to bedtime so I can keep on reading. It's a page-turner! Writing about Dale Paul, a hedge fund manager who one might judge as amoral, Swan manages, with wit and humor, to get beyond the stereotypes that are so easy to judge, and takes us inside this man's psyche.

A great original wickedly funny & mesmerizingly believable trip inside a pompous and unrepentant convicted Con-man's head and the twisted world that made him (and vice versa)...a wonderful cast of characters, a fascinating exploration of the financial world's darkest and most inventive products, an ending that you almost couldn't make up.

I had the chance to work on the novel creating the illustrations. I became fascinated with Dale Paul right from the beginng, who was created at the same time the #MeToo movement took off and the news was dominated by men falling from grace. Dale Paul is inspired by a number of real-life characters (but my lips are sealed). It's definitely a timely read. Highly recommend!

I throughly enjoyed this book. One can’t help being fascinated by Dale Paul even though he is a self centred, materialistic man.
All the characters come to life with Swan’s quick witted humour and style.
Hard to put down!

Susan Swan takes us behind the walls of an American prison and introduces us to some fascinating characters. As with The Western Light and her other novels, she fills the pages with well-researched details the reader might otherwise not know about. The Dead Celebrities Club is a good read.
