"This is the story of my unforgettable adventure. How I was challenged to face a dangerous villain called The Evil One in a magical land far below the earth to help save all who live there." - Ellie Get ready for an enthralling fantasy adventure as you take a trip below the earth to where kings, wizards, and magicians rule, and almost anything can happen! Teacher and author, Sofia Jarlo's mesmerizing debut children's novel introduces middle grade readers to a mythical and awe-inspiring secret world as they accompany Ellie on the exciting magical adventure of a lifetime. Ellie's adventure begins when she finds a hidden passage in the woods and -- led by a teeny-tiny boy -- travels down a dark, winding staircase, far below the earth, to a strange, fascinating magical realm called the Underworld. There, she meets all the kings of the kingdoms, and a new friend named Mischa who must teach Ellie everything she needs to know about their world to fulfill her promise to help the kings. Turns out, the Underworld's #1 enemy, The Evil One, has escaped his former prison and now threatens the entire Underworld. The kings believe only Ellie can save them by formulating a special plan. With her best friend's caring help and guidance, Ellie hopes she'll be able to help. But, when Mischa is caught by the villainous Evil One, Ellie is forced to act alone! She needs to learn to quickly think on her feet and become resourceful, cunning, and creative to save her friend and the entire Underworld -- before it's too late! A wonderful action-adventure, featuring an inspiring and engaging girl hero, this short-chapter book can either be read aloud to children or read on its own by more seasoned readers. This magical realism story is further brought to life through many wonderful color illustrations. Into the Unknown is the first book in the Below the Earth series, and each installment may be read separately.

Humans Are Good Thinkers

Turn off the TV and game boxes and gather the family together to read this delightful story of a young girl who finds a secret passage way leading below to a world known as Below the Earth.

Into the Unknown (Below the Earth Book 1) by Sofia Jario is an enchanting story of the citizens and kingdoms of a underworld in need of a human with a plan. Why a human? Because they are great thinkers! The plan? To conquer The Evil One, the meanest creature in the land, and return that being back to the chains that he escaped from.

Into the Unknown (Below the Earth Book 1) is a simple, but engaging story about a young girl by the name of Ellie who, along with her new found friends, saves the day and helps to defeat the ugly monster that is being mean to the people of Below the Earth. It is a light hearted story that brims with life lessons such as making friends, being kind, respectful, minding one's manners, overcoming challenges, dealing with tragedy, having fun and about not making harsh judgements.

It would seem, as well, that certain parts of the narrative could be used as a "springboard" for family discussions about certain life topics. Additionally, there are childish situations that will resonate with the young reader and will "gross out" the entire family.

The author, Sofia Jario, certainly displays her talent by providing this wonderful and beautifully illustrated little story that reflects her gift as an author and her abililty to engage and relate to the child. She specifically uses language, ideas and situations to engage the young reader, stimulate the imagination and advance the hunger for reading books within the young reader.

Into the Unknown is a 96 page, children's folk tale novella by Sofia Jarlo. The first in the Below the Earth series, Into the Unknown is the story of Ellie, a human girl who finds herself in a mystical land of tiny people, magic and kingdoms called the Underworld. Fearing the Evil One, the citizens of the Underworld are in danger and only Ellie can save them.

Young readers will love everything about this. It is full of the best things found in children's literature; magic, adventure, and lessons in friendship, kindness, bravery, and hope. Light-hearted and funny, there is no shortage of excitement and humor in this plot. The illustrations by Katarina Vintrafors are spellbinding and bring that extra bit of pizazz to Into the Unknown. I have a dozen youngsters in mind who will be introduced to Ellie, Mischa and the Underworld very soon.

Great story of adventure and great illustrations!

I can’t wait to read this story with my daughter. She loves to read and this is an engaging and exciting read that will spark her imagination.the illustrations are eye catching and whimsically beautiful. The story itself is wonderfully written with brave and exciting characters on a great adventure! I love that the author included a free rainy day kit that is designed to inspire kids to use their imagination, teaches them to think logically and how to pick out patterns and works on their hand-eye coordinations as well! I’m excited to bust out the activity on our next rainy day! I think this will be a well loved series that will be on our bookshelves to pass down to my daughters children someday!

Great story telling book

My absolute favorite thing about this book are the beautiful pictures! I read this story with my 9 year old cousin and she absolutely loved staring at the pictures while we read. She would barely let me put it down! She enjoyed the book very much, and she loved reading about Ellie and Mischa’s adventures. I have to read the other books put out because she’s been asking for more! Great book all around.

Young adult finds courage

Into the Unknown finds Ellie in a strange world where she is set to battle the Evil One. It is the typical story of a young girl finding the courage to battle evil on her own. It feels like Alice in Wonderland meets the Nutcracker and the 4 Realms.
I really like the special touch of the pictures throughout the book. I think the target audience (kids) will enjoy the story. The author did a great job of making it relatable.
