Yes, this short story was nominated for the 2018 Nebula award. It's pretty decent MilSF (military SF) if you like that kind of thing, but I don't think it ever would have made the final nominations without some behind-the-scenes gaming by a certain indie authors group called 20Booksto50K. More on that below. Review first posted on Fantasy Literature:

As Terran Union forces fight alien Naroosha flying saucers in the battered remains of Utica City, Sergeant Hoffman orders his troops ― massive men c
***Going Dark by Richard Fox***

A short story that was nominated for this year's Nebula Award.

I've not read the rest of this anthology. But this story once had a discrete entry, before it got merged with the anthology. *sighs* Anyhow, I've cleared my rating, because it was never supposed to be a rating for that book anyway. But I let my review stand for the one story that I've actually read.

It's a MilSF story with humans and cyborgs fighting an extraterrestrial threat.

Going Dark is a military science fiction story about a sergeant and his doughboys battling aliens in the remains of Utica City. When the cybernetic doughboys begin to malfunction, Sergeant Hoffman will have to find out what's happening all while trying not to get killed.

I'm pretty clearly not the target audience for this story since I'm not overly fond of military SF so it's not super surprising that I didn't particularly like this. There were a lot of terms that were tossed out and never expla

The rating is for 'Going Dark', a short story by Richards Fox which was nominated for the 2019 Nebula Awards. It was an unexceptional MilSF story. It is related to the author's extensive 'Ember War' series.

The scene is set as a chaotic battle rages in an urban area. Alien machines are contending with Terran forces. Sergeant Hoffman leads a group of cyborg soldiers into this chaos. The cyborgs are dubbed 'doughboys', in reference to an old nickname for US WW1 infantry. These soldiers are brave an

Great read.

Great read. Love powered armor books and this was one of the best. I have definitely downloaded a few of the authors. Well done.

There were a lot of fun stories in this anthology, stories I absolutely loved. Full disclosure, I have a short story in this anthology and personally curated it to my tastes. If you like trying out new authors, or reading fun stories over your coffee break, this might be the anthology for you! It's all the military sci-fi goodness you could want! It's seriously stolen all the Pews! So much PEW PEW you won't know what to do with yourself!
