This is the pseudonym of author Dorothy Howell.

It was in eighth grade English class that Judith realized she wanted to be a writer. Her teacher, who was from, what seemed at the time, the exotic and far off state of Florida, introduced the class to creative writing. Judith was hooked! Finally, there was something interesting in school!

But her first published work was still 20 years away.

Life changed when her family moved to nearby Roanoke, Virginia. On her first day of school, as she was introduced to Miss O’Neal’s ninth grade science class, a boy in the back of the room waved both arms in the air and shouted, “She can sit back here!” Judith knew that day her fate was sealed.

Judith and that young man just celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary.

Her husband’s career in the Air Force took them to California. They had two daughters and Judith worked in mortgage banking and consumer finance lending. Somehow, twenty years passed. With the love and support of her family, Judith’s first novel was published in 1988.

Seven long years, and countless rejections later, Judith sold her second novel. A third, then a fourth followed quickly, and she was on her way. By then she was writing full time. To date, she’s produced 23 historical novels, with sales approaching 3 million copies worldwide. Her titles include Harlequin Historical’s Top Seller of the Year, a RITA Award Finalist, and a No.1 on the Barnes & Noble Historical List.

In a departure from romantic fiction, Judith signed a multi-book deal with Kensington Books for a mystery series that launched in July, 2008 in hardcover, under the name Dorothy Howell. The debut mystery, HANDBAGS AND HOMICIDE, was a Publishers Weekly starred review. That was followed this year by PURSES AND POISON. The series has the same strong, sassy heroine, a hot hero, and the laugh-out-loud humor that readers love in her romantic fiction.

Judith makes her home in Southern California with her family that now includes a grandson, who is the light of all their lives. She is eternally grateful for her family, her readers, the support of her publisher and agent, and her good fortune.

Cheryl Reavis is one of my favorite authors; she is exceptionally talented and I'm always on the lookout for her books (even short stories).  I'm not as familiar with the other two authors. The great ratings by other readers made this a 'sure thing.'

THREE BRIDES AND A WEDDING DRESS (Judith Stacy) -- Anna Kingsley travels from Virginia to marry a man she met socially at her home in Virginia.  They wrote to each other several times and then Henry asked her to travel to his home in California and marry him.  He explained he owned a lumber company.  Henry was fibbing and he cleared out of town before Anna got there.  Cousins Cade and Ben Riker had to tell her the bad news.  They hired her to cook for them while she figured out what to do with her life.  This was a very satisfying story.

THE WINTER HEART (Cheryl Reavis) -- Eleanor Hansen has come to Wyoming Territory to teach children; which is a fresh start after her loss during the Civil War (it's 1869).  People warn Eleanor that she will be taking the next train out of town. When she has to fire her revolver at a man less than 10 hours after arriving, she begins to wonder if maybe they are right.

Cheryl Reavis seems to specialize in stories about people damaged by the Civil War.  This is a unique, complex, and fascinating story about two people trying to pick up the pieces of their lives after their experiences in the war.

MC CORD'S DESTINY (Pam Crooks) -- This story claimed it took place in 1892, but it had a contemporary ring to it. Juliette Blanchard, an architect, has designed the perfect deluxe resort for 300 acres near Omaha, Nebraska.  The oil in the ointment is that the land is held by Tru McCord, a former love interest of Juliette.  Tru refuses to sell; then, he agrees only if she will marry him.

Her ailing sister Camille (the parents were killed in a scarlet fever epidemic and Camille is forever frail) is with Juliette on the trip to Omaha.  They live in New York.  But Camille has just announced that she plans to marry Tru's younger brother, Ryan, and stay in Omaha.  Then, Juliette learns the truth about her mother and (especially) her father.  The visit to Omaha turns into a real downer and Juliette has to face some difficult truths. It was unfortunate that the publishers put this story immediately after THE WINTER HEART.  After that stellar story, any story would appear ho-hum.

***Overall ratings from fave-to-least-fave = Reavis, Stacy, and Crooks.

THREE BRIDES AND A WEDDING DRESS, by Judith Stacy

This one started out great but soon faded. It was a great storyline, though what it lacked was a deep POV. I just couldn't get into the characters. With that said, I have read other books by her in the past that I loved! This one just wasn't one of them.

THE WINTER HEART, by Cherly Reavis

This was the first book I've read by this author, and I must say I enjoyed it. The characters were likeable though she could have given a deeper POV. I like the storyline, and was kept wanting to know what would happen next.

McCORD'S DESTINY, by Pam Crooks

This was not the first book I read by this author, and I'm sure it won't be the last. I loved how it started out, and though it seemed to quickly switch gears, it was a great story, well written with characters you fall in love with.

ALL THREE STORIES

In this book SPRING BRIDES; I was reminded of a crescendo. Each one getting better. I'm glad I didn't let the first one deter me from reading the others.
