Greta Helsing has been invited to be an interim medical director of Oasis Natrun, an exclusive medical facility and spa for mummies, located in Marseille, France. Although her relationship with Varney is relatively new, Greta jumps at the chance, eager to work at such an advanced clinic. However, things aren’t so simple; shortly after Greta arrives, she realizes there’s something going wrong with the mummy population. In Italy, Ruthven and Grisaille are on holiday when two strange individuals ca ...more

Vivian Shaw’s novels are of the slow-burn variety. Her language is rich, her dialogue complex, and her characters distinct, but I think the defining characteristic of her books is the slow unfolding of the plots. They start small, but you know they’ll expand, and when they do they open like a flower, with ideas spiraling outward and people moving with them, then everything furling together at the last. It’s quite magnificent, but can make for a meditative-paced read. This one had intense and ove ...more

For my latest Waiting on Wednesday segment, I look at a book that promises to be quite entertaining and features an incredibly eye-catching cover, Grave Importance by Vivan Shaw.

For the last two years I have had the pleasure of enjoying Vivian Shaw’s debut series, the Dr. Greta Helsing series: Strange Practice in 2017 and Dreadful Company in 2018. This has been a fun and intriguing series that combines intriguing mysteries and supernatural adventures with fascinating monster medicine. The titula

Greta Helsing’s entourage of loving friends have been the highlight of this series. Unlike many other books with multiple viewpoints, the Strange Practice series’ POV characters are equally fun to read and engage with.

Varney, Grisaille, Ruthven, and Greta truly make you root for their success every step of the way, and not just their success, but their lasting happiness. One can only hope to be the kind of person Greta is, the kind of person who effortlessly inspires the best in others.

I love this series— received this as a Goodreads pre-publication giveaway, was looking forward to it, and did not disappoint. The world that Shaw has created is absolute catnip for the bookworm (like Fforde’s Thursday Next series, but perhaps not so wackadoodle) — she presents a world in which the literary monsters are all real, so there’s the thrill of recognizing Varney the vampyre (etc etc and etc) and the fascinating ways they interact with humans and non humans. Greta Helsing (the family dr ...more

I was so excited to receive this book in a giveaway! What a wonderful completion to the series!! It's impossible to pick a favorite of the trilogy as they're all wonderful fun. Great characters that I fell in love with and villains that I loved to hate! Ms. Shaw is a talented writer and is equally gifted at world-building, crafting wonderful characters and writing action and romance. She had threads that ran through all three books (I would definitely recommend reading the trilogy in order) and ...more

OMG this book! Rip my heart out just to put it back together! In all honesty I felt this was the perfect and exciting end to the Greta Helsing trilogy (which I’m super sad is only a trilogy. Seriously I could used at least a few more!) This book was action packed and perfectly blended the three books overarching storyline that was quite a... revelation. The book itself did a beautiful job of raising tension throughout with its pacing. I’m dying to say more but I don’t want to give away spoilers!

Absolutely loved it

I have loved every book in the series and this one is no different! Vivian Shaw's writing is phenomenal and draws you in so strongly that you have to force yourself not to binge read it all day. The further world building is perfect, I could picture everything as if I were watching a show or movie. I love these characters so much and will probably reread all the books again because I can't get enough!

I loved this book! I read the first one and enjoyed it, but wasn't chomping at the bit to buy the next one. I received an advanced copy of Grave Importance, and I could not put it down. It's refreshingly different and interesting. It's both creative and clever. Ms. Shaw has clearly done her homework when it comes to the medical details, Egyptian lore and plenty of other things!

I received this book free from a Goodreads sweepstakes-the uncorrected editor's proof. And I honestly can tell you that that last part made no difference at all because it was an absolutely wonderful book. I couldn't put it down, and it was worth the loss of sleep.

As with the previous two books, the characterizations are rich and vivid, the story is delicious, and the ride is bite-your-lip delightful!

Thoroughly enjoyable entry in the series. Real character growth, and the new location allows for more fun worldbuilding.
