It will be awhile before Force fans and readers see this one, but it will definitely be worth the wait. The setting in beautiful Newport, Rhode Island plays its own special part, along with two very charming, endearing and fascinating lead characters who share immediate chemistry that ignites a wonderful love story. There's an added touch of mystery and suspense added for additional entertainment. I simply loved this one from start to finish.

Be sure and catch the first book in the Gilded series

Marie Force’s Gilded series does not break any new ground in the historical romance subgenre, other than being a little more sexually explicit than the historicals I found on my mom’s bookshelf back in the day, but I am really enjoying these characters and their stories. Even though I knew the direction the story would go, I was still completely invested in these characters and what the next page would bring. The backdrop of the social season in Newport, RI, and those lovely beach “cottages” of ...more
Sakshi *the bookish romantic*
Things started well in the book with Aubrey, the owner of the mansion meeting Maeve, the housekeeper. I felt giddy hoping it to be the start of a spicy romance. And then everything started going downhill from there.

Maeve Brown was the Irish housekeeper of the palatial house of the Nelsons. The start of the book hinted that Maeve had an aura of independence and strong headedness but nothing of the sort was reflected in later parts of the book. She was more like a meek puppy than a woman who faced

Aubrey Nelson is a wealthy man - new money, as it were - and has very good friends that include the Duke and Duchess of Westbrook. Aubrey has invited them, as well as other dear friends to summer at his mother's estate.

As Aubrey's father is ill, he arrives ahead of his parents. This turns out to be a very good thing. His mother is a tyrant to the fullest extent and had upset her household staff when she was last there that they left the house to ruin. When Aubrey steps into t

The early 20th century was a fascinating time in history with so many advancements taking place. But the class differences were still there and Marie Force takes us into the romance that happens between a wealthy American and the housekeeper of his family's seaside cottage. I did not knew Mrs Marie Force was publishing Historical romance, she was a contemporary romance author to me. Why I have not yet read one of her work.
I do not know if it is me or the time period sets for this book, but I find it so much more modern than the historical romances have read so far.
The writing style is smooth and the plot flows without any bump.
It was Cinderella with a bit of suspense.
Once I was over this change of writing style, I surely enjoyed Maeve and Aubrey’s story.

Deceived by Desire by Marie Force is the second in her Gilded series, following Duchess by Deception. Aubrey Nelson has arrived at his parents' "cottage" in Newport to prepare for the arrival of his family and his summer guests. He is appalled to discover that the staff from the previous summer was so disgruntled with their treatment that instead of closing up the house, they had left open all the windows and had purposely left food in some rooms for maximum damage. He discovered that a lone wom ...more

As one who began reading romance in my teens, I read only regency stories. That changed and I have now found myself back to reading some - Marie Force’s Gilded series to be exact. I have always enjoyed Marie’s writing style and she now has this series (set in the early 1900’s) it one not to be missed.
The early 1900’s was an exciting time. The beginning of the Industrial Age evolving into changes for men and women. This book envelopes those changes. It is the story of Irish girl Maeve Brown and

Another wonderful story by Marie Force. I always look forward to reading her books, and although today I read mostly contemporary romances, I started reading romance when historical romance was about all there was. It was so interesting to read this historical romance and the fact it actually took place in the early 20th century made it even more fun. I had read the previous book, but if you have not, don’t be afraid you won’t know what is going on. One of my favorite reasons for reading Ms. For ...more

This second historical romance by Marie Force is another winner and I truly hope we will see more of these delightful characters in the future. Set the summer after Duchess By Deception, this is the story of Aubrey Nelson and his rather inappropriate choice of a bride. Not only is Maeve the family housekeeper, she's Irish and she's accused of murdering her first husband! Now if that isn't cause for scandal with Newport Society, what is?
Once again Marie Force has written a very engaging romance t

I started my romance reading journey way back in the day with historicals.  From the early '80s and through the '00s, I devoured everything from all the classic romance writers; McNaught, Garwood, Lindsey, etc. I read them all.  Once  I discovered an e-reader and was no longer limited to what was offered in my local bookstore, my romance view expanded and I left the historicals behind as being too tame. However, Marie Force's name has floated into my sphere of vision again and again so I decided ...more

This is the second in a series, and by an author that is a new one to me. This author has an extensive blacklist of contemporary novels, and this is her second historical, and continues the story of some of the characters apparently introduced in the first book: Duchess by Deception.

Aubrey Nelson is the youngest son in a large, upper class, American family. His father is a wealthy industrialist and his mother is an English aristocrat, who settled for marrying an American commoner when her prefer

Secrets and lies, big or small, eventually come to the surface. It’s how we deal with those things that define us as humans. For Maeve, an Irish woman working at the Nelson family’s Newport summer home her job is an escape from a troubled past in Ireland. Her husband has died, and some may try to convince others that his death was no accident. She’s always waiting for her past to show up on her doorstep – and eventually, it will. What also shows up is one of Nelson’s

I'm going to have to call it quits with this series.

Between the instalove, the black and white qualities of the characters (as in they're either 100% treacle-y good or they're vile human beings; for main characters here there's no other options), the clunky dialogue and the repetition (both Maeve and Aubrey dwell internally on the same concerns over. And. Over. And. Over. And. Over. And that's before anything happens plotwise to bring those concerns to the fore or to change anything); I just can

Reading a Marie Force book is an undeniable pleasure. Her prose is easy to read, her plots riveting, her characters charming except for her perfectly hateful villains, and there’s just the right amount of sexy times. In this one, we have two characters who feel instant chemistry; one is all for acting on the attraction, the other is reticent and reluctant. The differences between social and economical classes is strong and evident in this period romance and there is a slow burn that is just plai ...more

1903 - Newport, Rhode Island

Aubrey Nelson, 32, is observing the beauty of the housekeeper, Maeve Brown, who is cleaning his home called Paradis Trouve on Bellvue Avenue. His family had purchased the home from the Astor family.

Having just arrived to see the house opened for the season, he is shocked to see how filthy it is. His parents had wanted him to see that all was ready for the upcoming visit of the Duke and Duchess of Westwood.

I’ve read Marie Force romances before, all contemporary with an edge of erotica, so when I was offered the chance to read this Historical romance, I jumped at the idea. I had to read it.
The story is set in the early 1900’s embracing all the changes that the Industrial Age procured for men and women, and all the possibilities. I loved that. I also enjoyed how the author built a story that’s a little bit of Cinderella but with a side of suspense.

Deceived by Desire is the second book in Marie Force’s Gilded series. It’s a historical romance story. Now, I’m not a huge historical romance fan, but I AM a Marie Force fan, so I took the plunge with this one and with the first book, Duchess by Deception. Aubrey and Maeve’s story is a great blend of intrigue, romance, history and fun. As with many great stories both characters are working through some baggage or family issues and they meet while doing so. Extremely well written, I was immersed in the story very quickly and enjoyed it all in one setting. Vivid descriptions had me picturing some of the vile rooms, picnic locatio ...more

Although I normally read contemporary novels, the second book in this series is just as delightful as the first (of course I read and love everything that Ms. Force writes). In Deceived by Desire, she returns to her early 20th century historical series. This installment is set in Newport, RI and features a previously seen secondary character, Aubrey.

This stand alone effort focuses on Aubrey’s “scandalous” relationship with Maeve - an Irish woman he meets while she is working for his family.
