Cassie grew up in a small town at the very tip of southern Illinois. A tomboy, she spent most of her time outside and got into big trouble for breaking the trellis while climbing out her second-story bedroom window.

When her family moved to L.A., major culture shock ensued. She discovered that grapefruits grew on trees, television offered more than two channels, and all the other girls had breasts. While hiding out and waiting for her chest to develop, she read voraciously, raiding her mother's bookshelf for Mickey Spillane when she finished all her Nancy Drew novels.

Another move took her family to Denver, the place Cassie still calls home.

She graduated from North Central college outside Chicago, got married, and returned to Colorado where she worked in personnel at the Denver Post and lived in a mountain cabin without running water. Upon learning she was pregnant, a return to civilization seemed prudent. She settled in Denver, raised two amazing daughters, and started writing for Harlequin. After her divorce, she took a break from romance and wrote straight suspense.

During her frantic years as a single mom, writing books and working odd jobs to supplement her income, she hardly had time to breathe, much less to dream. Then something remarkable happened. She fell in love with a tall, sexy man who was an aerial photographer and the author of tough-guy mystery novels. Fortunately, he loved her back. She found her real-life hero, inherited three more grown kids and three grandchildren.

Cassie started writing romance again, loving every minute of a life filled with laughter, crazy road trips, sailboats, and journeys to Oregon with long walks on rocky beaches.

Not too long ago, the love of her life developed inoperable pancreatic cancer. With supportive friends and family standing by, he died at home.

Cassie now lives alone, surrounded by beautiful memories. She has no regrets and considers herself lucky to have found her soul mate, the man with whom she shared a perfect love.

Cassie Miles returns with her latest Intrigue, "Undercover Protector." A vengeful criminal has been released from prison and he's sworn revenge against Annie Callahan and her grandfather, the judge who put him away. That is hard enough for Annie to deal with. The arrival of her first love, the man who walked out of her life without a word, is worse. Michael Slade vows to protect Annie and her grandfather. But what secrets is Michael keeping from her, and can she trust him to stay this time when she needs him most?

"Undercover Protector" isn't the best book from this author or the line but I did enjoy it the most out of this month's Intrigues. Miles has a strong voice and a pleasing storytelling style that will pull readers through from beginning to end. While there are a few rough spots in the story, I never lost interest for a moment. Although one big misunderstanding is foreseeable a mile away, it fortunately doesn't derail the plot like it could have. Annie and Michael's romance develops nicely, and the small town flavor is a nice added touch. Unfortunately, the title is a bit of a spoiler, since we don't find out the undercover aspect of Michael's mission until near the end. I still enjoyed "Undercover Protector." Fans of her "Captive Hearts" books last year won't want to miss it.

Long lost friends and boyfriend girlfriend get together because of her recovering grandfather. But is that really why he is back and they are now engaged. She is a cop, but is he really a boat captain or is something else going on?

I was supposed to love this one. Childhood friend, arrangement relationship when they're pretending to be couple ... but I just thought that the whole story was a bit flat. :(
But perhaps it's because of my mood.

This book was pretty good. I liked the plot and the characters. I liked the emotions and action scenes. The ending was great. I liked the HEA and the epilogue. That was a great smiling end. I would read this book again, but more to pass the time and with nothing more engaging to read. Enjoy
