Striptease
Celita is a stripper at the Monico, a nightclub in Cannes, as well as the long-standing mistress of Monsieur Leon, the nightclub's owner. She enjoyed her struggle to win him away from his wife, Madame Florence, but when a new stripper named Maud becomes a star overnight, Celita at once realises that her hold over Leon is threatened. In this artistically-told story from the master of the genre, nothing can prepare us for its violent and startlingly tragic end.

About the author
Georges Simenon
2,689 books2,457 followersGeorges Joseph Christian Simenon (1903 – 1989) was a Belgian writer. A prolific author who published nearly 500 novels and numerous short works, Simenon is best known as the creator of the fictional detective Jules Maigret.
Although he never resided in Belgium after 1922, he remained a Belgian citizen throughout his life.
Simenon was one of the most prolific writers of the twentieth century, capable of writing 60 to 80 pages per day. His oeuvre includes nearly 200 novels, over 150 novellas, several autobiographical works, numerous articles, and scores of pulp novels written under more than two dozen pseudonyms. Altogether, about 550 million copies of his works have been printed.
He is best known, however, for his 75 novels and 28 short stories featuring Commissaire Maigret. The first novel in the series, Pietr-le-Letton, appeared in 1931; the last one, Maigret et M. Charles, was published in 1972. The Maigret novels were translated into all major languages and several of them were turned into films and radio plays. Two television series (1960-63 and 1992-93) have been made in Great Britain.
During his "American" period, Simenon reached the height of his creative powers, and several novels of those years were inspired by the context in which they were written (Trois chambres à Manhattan (1946), Maigret à New York (1947), Maigret se fâche (1947)).
Simenon also wrote a large number of "psychological novels", such as La neige était sale (1948) or Le fils (1957), as well as several autobiographical works, in particular Je me souviens (1945), Pedigree (1948), Mémoires intimes (1981).
In 1966, Simenon was given the MWA's highest honor, the Grand Master Award.
In 2005 he was nominated for the title of De Grootste Belg (The Greatest Belgian). In the Flemish version he ended 77th place. In the Walloon version he ended 10th place.

So there you are, I finished another Simenon roman dur as an enjoyable in-betweenie. To my surprise, ‘Striptease’ was of a slightly different atmosphere and nature than Simenon’s normal story telling from his usual male point of view. Perhaps that was due to the fact that the novel’s story is told by its main character, the striptease performer Celita, a deeply sad and dissatisfied woman. I had no idea that Simenon had it in him to write so compassionately about a female which is rather rare in his other novels. This novel was written in 1961 and the action is located in Cannes. I enjoyed the story and interesting nightclub setting, sad as it was. I wondered though what made him write all of the sudden from a female point of view. Perhaps it was just an experiment of him to see if it turned out that he could do that perfectly as well. And he did!

Having only previously read one Simenon, I could have spent weeks mulling over which to pick next and still not got anywhere. His output was simply incredible. I could have written the names of 50 random works out of hundreds, then folded the little pieces of paper and picked one out of a hat. But, to save all the hassle of that; and looking a little bit sad and foolish for doing so, I just went for this because of it's Riviera setting.
What's not to love about the French Riviera?
As soon as Maud, the fresh-faced new girl in town, wiggles her rump for Leon, owner of club Monico, and sets off a jealousy within the other older, less attractive strippers—especially the cunning Celita, who spies her through a peephole; biting her lip; drawing blood—things were never going to be the same again. It's short work of perspiring dancers, crafty seductions, wealthy businessmen, strained friendships, sunbathing, and tragedy.
I wouldn't simply lump this into the genre of crime fiction, as it's more psychological drama with just a hint of noir for me. I really felt for the employees of Monico, and it brings home just what a shitty, lonely, and degrading world it can be. But if it pays the rent, right?
Where does this rank when it comes to his novels? I have absolutely no idea! For the couple of hours it took to get through, I enjoyed it though.

The book was written in 1958, but the scene Simenon sets in Cannes is probably that of the 1930s. It's amazing to see how he creates the atmosphere of a sleazy nightclub, and gets inside the heads of the 'working girls'. One of the best scenes shows the terrible feeling of loss felt by one of the girls after she loses the heel of a shoe, from her one good pair of shoes, while dancing with a client.
In some ways it's a pity that Simenon became best known for his pot-boiler Maigret novels, and that not enough attention is paid to his 'serious' literary ones such as Striptease. I say this as a lover of both Simenon's Maigret novels and his literary ones.

It's not my usual genre but I'm going through material of this subject-matter as research for my own writing hobbies.
It started to feel a little repetitive in the first part, to the point of my nearly giving it up due to the writer's trademark detective styles coming through in the form of a crime case requiring an Inspector.
However, I battled through and reached part two which blew me away and made me feel so rewarded for having stuck it out as a new Simenon reader.
I feel the characters, their arc, their dialogue, was pitch-perfect. As for the scenery and the timeline, I fell in love hearing about all the beautiful (and less beautiful, still so in my eyes) French locations, and the stylishness of Cannes give me that classic polo-shirt, bronzed-skin, hairy-chest, white-tanlines and sunglasses vibe.
I'll read more Georges Simenon.

This is one of Simenon’s romans-durs that has been out of print for many years, and is just waiting for a publisher to give it life again. It certainly deserves it.
It’s the usual grim situation that Simenon describes, with vulnerable, dislikeable and unglamorous characters. As ever, he manages to fit a huge amount into the few pages, with memorable descriptions of the seedy side of Cannes at night and the squalid world of the nightclub, the Monico.
Specifically it concerns the lives of four ageing striptease ‘artistes’ struggling with problems of weight and cleanliness, when an attractive nineteen year old turns up at the nightclub door.
At times the descriptions put me in mind of the women portrayed in The Deuce with its exploration of life behind the prostitution and pornographers, and their day to day struggle to survive.

This is one of Simenon's psychological novels. It takes place within a seedy strip club in Cannes on the French Riviera and follows the conflicted emotions of a dancer as she relates to other dancers, her boss, and a younger newcomer. Simenon has the ability to lift the profane and mundane toward the sublime, and this novel is a worthy example of sad human lives in all their complexities under a gentle, compassionate microscope.

My second Simenon, the other being one of his Maigret novels. This is an interesting book with just the right touch of pulp. The way Simenon describes these women is sort of chauvinistic. Still, I'll let that slide because I see this novel as a study of a micro-cosmos, a millieu. It's set in the red-light district of Cannes where a lot of people have a dirty job. However many of these people, especially the girls, a complex characters. Often they have a backstory wound, something terrible that has happened to them in their lives. When Celita considers the sum of her life, alone, at 32, dead child, being replaced by a much younger girl, without any perspective, she can only come to the conclusion that she is a tragic character.
Simenon does not seem to have a clear vision where this novel is headed plotwise. Nothing much happens. The end is quite boring. A little more plot, combined with the atmospheric description of the red-light world of Cannes, it could have been a much better novel.
3,5/5

Simenon was a master of style. His books are always there, in the moment, right now - there is not a single word too much, everything is clear cut and a piece of the constantly moving story. His parsimony when it comes to words is an instrument to make the reader part of what is going on. Starting one of his books means being literally sucked into it just by the way he writes.
Striptease describes the life of nightclub dancers in Cannes around the mid 1950s. The book reads as if it was written last year. Everything in this book could happen the same way today, though I assume that the situation for many women in such situations is much worse today than it was 60 years ago.
The book doesn't talk around things, it addresses the problems of its protagonist with a sharp clarity that allows for no escape. It shows that Simeon was aware of many of the problems which are only discussed today in public already in 1957.
An excellent book, which at no point is trivial or cheap.

Of the romans durs, not his best

It was unusual for Simenon to write a novel from a female point of view or to be centred on female characters, The Girl with a Squint is another. Here a stripper in a club in Cannes is threatened by the arrival of a younger girl who captivates the boss. Our main character who is sharing a room with another stripper at the same club had hoped to lure the boss away from his wife and thus gain control of the club, but the new girl has similar plans and the boss is entranced but the younger girl, and then his wife dies.
A very interesting novel from Simenon based on his own knowledge of Cannes and strip clubs.

No real strong narrative here but it’s got enough Simenon mood to make it enjoyable enough for a fan. If The characters are ultimately a bit interchangeable,I’ve told myself that’s almost the point on this one, as everything is shot through dim lights, clouds of smoke and whiskey fumes. What action there is comes a bit too little too late but again, as a mood piece, it kind of worked for me.

A fascinating psychological investigation into the minds of 'working' girls. Their motivations and jealousies are x-rayed by a 'man who should know.' Better than I expected.
