Void by Ranmaru Zaria is a very intense story dealing with grief, betrayal and human bonding in a dystopian setting where androids cohabit with human beings.

As in the typical style of this mangaka, the drawings are beautifully detailed and often rather graphic but always with a strong poetic intensity.

Very interesting!

This one is kinda upsetting at first, and I realized, so does her other works. Void is heavy, direct, and explicit as all reflected in Zaria's other works.

This series revolved around a sort of twisted retaliation from an old betrayal that mellowed out to be love. Human punishing humanoid, as if there could be anything more empty as nothing as this idea. Of course, the dead won't hear your raging heart. The object that he left is merely a memento; a body without soul. But that is what the story is actually about.

Void is the empty feeling, the untouched bird cage... wanting to catch life if he'd be lucky enough to get it. After 7 years of the uninhabited, hollowed chest, Maki finally got the chance he lost to give his life meaning. It was when a friend (ex-colleague) gifted him a humanoid that mirrored his dead traitorous former lover's appearance and memories. Bewitching, tormenting—a hauntingly beautiful tale of grief and acceptance. This is such a gem.

Avvertenze: scene hot particolarmente esplicite. Consenso dubbio, per chi è sensibile.

Zariya Ranmaru sensei proved that she can draw
manga with deep and thought-provoking plot, exploring different facets of human nature. The story starts dark and heavy but ends with light and hope, a happily ever after for the two broken souls.

I’ve always loved her realistic art style, but this story is so captivating I read it three times in one go. This book has a lot less “correctional coverage” compared to her other earlier works 眠り男と恋男 and PET契約, the genital area is not completely whited out, just thin white stripes instead.

The seme マキ is former chief of the Humanoid Protection Agency, he had an unhappy relationship with his ex-bf あまみや れん who died 7 years ago and has since been the permafrost in his heart. The ex-bf loved the seme’s older brother ヨシアキ who’s straight with wife and son, he just used the seme as a substitute with similar appearance. So the seme has been isolating himself and living in a mixture of emotions, such as sadness, hatred, frustration, jealousy, and regret…

The uke アラタ ミズモリ is an illegal pet-type humanoid designed for male owners, who was rescued from an unlicensed humanoid company and just got shipped to the seme’s house by an old colleague Rowen as birthday present. The uke’s appearance and memory are all replicated from actual human (seme’s ex-bf), different from the generic humanoid with ordinary look and personality. He’s also got an imprint function so he will entrust himself to the first person he sees, just like newborn baby and parents.

The uke doesn’t remember who seme is, but thinks he looked familiar. His past knowledge and experience are generic data prepared for humanoid. The uke likes seme’s home and wants to stay with him, so the seme threatens that he will be returned to the Humanoid Protection Agency if he doesn’t fulfill seme’s command. The seme puts the uke to use quickly and the first few times they had sex it was quite forceful with some BDSM elements.

The seme saw the uke as substitute for his ex-bf, so his sadistic desire (negative emotions toward the ex-bf) is fulfilled from punishing the uke. It’s sad to see the uke cry under the torture and said he just wanted the seme to love him properly, seme must’ve had conflicting feelings to hear that from the face of his ex-bf. The ex-bf is clever and manipulative, who played the seme in his palms. Whereas the uke is naive and pure, accepting everything about the seme, whether good or bad.

One night after sex, the seme asked uke why his first sentence when they met was “I’m sorry.” and told the uke although he looks like the ex-bf but their personalities are different. So the uke asked the seme to not compare the two of them. As the seme received a letter about removing the imprint function of humanoid, he wondered what he wanted to do about uke…

After two weeks, the seme brings uke back to the Agency for regular checkup. The uke was anxious like a lil kid being taken away from parents. He rejected the optional consultation session as he felt there’s no need to report any abuse from the seme. As spoken with Rowen, the seme realized that he can no longer treat uke as substitute of ex-bf, he’s worried the uke will leave him once the imprint function is removed…

Eventually the seme fell for uke through all the sweet moments they shared together, such as uke cooking delicious meal for seme, watering all the green plants in the house, sewing back the buttons on seme’s suit sleeve, and trying to build a bird house with his clumsy woodwork.

The seme finally took uke out one day to buy plant fertilizers, a bicycle for commute, and a nice restaurant with patio where they watched beautiful sunset together. Then at night the seme woke up from a nightmare in panic and told the uke to tell him ASAP if anything happened. They had a long chat, the uke said his past is well organized so he’s worried about the unknown future, whereas the seme seems to not care about present and future instead he’s hunted by the past… The uke hugged the seme and said he’s jealous of the ex-bf and wished it is him in the seme’s heart. They kissed for the first time and made love…

One day the seme’s older brother came over uninvited and was shocked to see the uke, the uke’s past memory (from ex-bf) was triggered and he had heartache and tears coming out of his eyes… The maid took uke to rest and he woke up after sleeping all day. The seme was drenched in the pouring rain and saw himself in the mirror with brushed back hair looking like his older brother. The uke found seme on the balcony smoking and asked why is he looking so sad? The seme didn’t like the way the uke looked at the older brother, but he’s even more devastated that uke’s feeling for him is due to imprint function…

At night, the seme told uke the story about his ex-bf and the older brother, although he’s been hunted by the past in the last 7 years but the uke has helped him move on. He apologized to the uke for the way he was treated and decided to remove the uke’s imprint function, he hopes that uke would stay with him forever. The uke cried and said he likes the seme the most regardless of the imprint function, and made the seme agree to do whatever he asks as compensation in the future. The uke took the pill and fainted after the seme said the password, he’s then taken back to the Agency.

The seme visited the ex-bf’s grave after 7 years as he’s finally found closure, he didn’t even come to the funeral. His older brother just started his own company back then and had financial difficulties. The ex-bf wanted to help so he signed agreement with illegal humanoid company to provide DNA and memory, and put down the older brother as beneficiary.

Half a year later, the highly anticipated date Dec 16 has arrived. The seme has been keeping himself busy at work after rejoining the Agency. He took a day off at home with Rowen’s company. Time is the answer for everything, the seme is nervous about whether the uke has let go and moved on. He’s too scared to go pick up the uke but very relieved to see the uke at his house gate.

The epilogue is very tender and sweet, the seme said he kept on thinking about the uke in the last half a year and he’s super happy that uke has returned. He let the uke take the lead in physical contact because he doesn’t want the uke to dislike him as the imprint function has been lifted. The uke asked the seme to take off his clothes too (for the first time) and they had gentle loving sex where the seme pleased the uke from head to toe… The next morning seme woke up in bed to see the uke standing under the tree, happily watching bird flying into the tree house that they built together.

Just me going through this author's older titles and wow, the stories have definitely improved. This one reads like your typical BL title of abuse to love. The art is still beautiful and steamy, but it's much darker than Coyote and Birds, the top taking out his frustrations on a pet humanoid (after it imprints on him) who was created based on his ex's form and even some of his memories. It's very tragic in many ways. I gave it a 4 because there aren't many scifi titles in BL that have much depth and I think this one tried and succeeded

Good ending, but the sadness of betrayal, affair (with not-so-straight Maki's bro, or dumped?) and the death still lingering till the last page...

Zaria's work is an ART. I always love the way this mangaka draw the making love scenes, it's really really beautiful, that's what making love is, not only lust but also feelings in it, Zaria made it like an art, not some cheap porno magazines.

My second most favorite scenes is the symbolic image of Arata and the bird's coming home to his/its home.

I still hope that someday Zaria might be appointed to draw the manga version of Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat.

Was about to DNF it in the beginning, but since it's a short story I persisted. It's fine, the ending was as emotional as it can get. But in all honesty, it doesn't fall under the type of BL I tend to like.

Void is a tale of grief, acceptance, and new beginnings. Our main character Maki has been saddled with an android named Arata that has the same name, likeness, and partial memories of his former lover. Maki has extreme anger towards this former lover and we find out why over the course of the story. It is interested to watch Maki go from taking his anger out on Arata to seeing the differences between him and the human Arata. The ending is sweet. This mangaka leans towards somewhat darkish themes and this manga was probably the darkest of her series in the beginning that I've read. I love her art style and with volume have completed all of her English works currently published. She did not disappoint with this story and I cannot wait to read more of her work.

Ranmaru Zariya is an amazing artist and story teller. She doesn’t shy away from dark themes or difficult questions, as is evident in this 2016 manga, Void.

Maki, a former executive of a humanoid production company, receives an unexpected “gift” from a former colleague: a humanoid sexual servant named Arata, who was programmed, in part, using his former lover’s memories. The first part of the manga is dark and disturbing, as is predictable from the story’s premise. Zaria excels in moody, gothic visuals, and doesn’t disappoint. However, she’s also able to evoke beautiful, elegant scenes as well. Her full range as an artist is on display here.

This manga raises multiple ethical issues. Is the coerced sex and rape of a manufactured human made solely to sexually please humans really rape? (Of course it is). If it’s possible to somehow set such manufactured beings free, so that they have free choice, can it really be justified to keep them in a subservient state? (No). Is there redemption after sexually abusing someone? (There shouldn’t be, but in this BL….). Is it ethical to feel empathy for a redeemed character just because of deeply moving scenes whose affect is, to a large extent, due to the beauty of the art?

It’s not an artist’s job to please. It is an artist’s job to provoke deep reflection and serious questions. The skill and elegance of their artwork is the means by which this is accomplished. On all these criteria, Zaria scores high on this BL.

I don't really know how to rate it: it's not a bad story but I can't say I like it...
I bought it without thinking, but I don't know if it was worth it.

It's has an interesting setting, but it felt like it was too rushed, I would have liked more if there were more details about the universe and maybe some more flashback.
It had potential but has not been explained in the right way, too rushed, maybe a bit too much fan service I felt like the story wasn't the focus of the volume, it's more centered on the sex. So if you are searching something like that, this is the volume for you.
