Vera Mary Brittain was an English writer and pacifist, best remembered as the author of the best-selling 1933 memoir Testament of Youth, recounting her experiences during World War I and the beginning of her journey towards pacifism.
Her daughter is Shirley Vivian Teresa Brittain Williams, Baroness Williams of Crosby, who is a British politician and academic who represents the Liberal Democrats.
I enjoyed reading this memoir of the friendship that developed between Vera Brittain and the writer, Winifred Holtby, that lasted until Holtby's premature death. It was a very sisterly relationship, and affected Brittain's thoughts and her writing until the end of her life.
This is the third book by Brittain that I've read, and although not my absolute favorite I enjoyed it very much.
c1986: Ok, so it probably would have been wiser to have read this book after having read some of her books. The diary reads as one would write a diary ie abbreviations, initials and the like. I found some of the entries to be midly cryptic although there are notes at the back describing who was who, claim to fame and surrounding circumstances but this made it difficult to read smoothly. Recommended for members of the crew who have a particular interest in this time period.
