The described Atlantis in this book is definitely not the one you hear of in other stories. Mara Powers has brilliantly managed to weave an intricate world around this mythical city but it is filled with gadgets and a magic system that goes beyond one's scope of imagination. The worldbuliding is highly intricate with detailed descriptions of

There are books that people love and recommend all the time and then there are books like these. Not many people know about them but once you give them a chance, they completely blow you away. I was blown away from the first sentence and I'm still floating around somewhere. Beware, this book will never let you put your feet on the ground. Once you are under its spell, you are going to remain there forever. This is not a book you w

I wanted to like this book more than I did. Early on I was frequently distracted by the bizarre 'technologies' that the people possessed and the explanations of histories/famous past Atlanteans that peppered the pages. A ways into the book these seem to settle down and one could read it more for the story, but there was still a lot of set-up in this book that made it difficult to enjoy the underlying tale. Overall it was okay but I'm not sure I'll read the second one.

Shadows of Atlantis: Awakening is a fictional novel that explores the culture and downfall of the legendary lost city of Atlantis. Mara Powers has studied this legendary place for over thirty years and has created a compelling story of humanity’s inner spirit, our relationship with nature, and the greed/deceptive employed by those in government.

The story follows Brigitte (would-be Queen of Atlantis and daughter of a powerful Dreamseer clan) and D’vinid (a disgraced royal and famed musician, dubb

Shadows of Atlantis: Awakening, by Mara Powers (326 pages, published by Shadows of Atlantis LLC, 2018), is the first part of the Shadows of Atlantis series, and is a mythical fiction and fantasy novel located in the third era of the enigmatic kingdom of Atlantis. The author has dedicated the book to "the awakening of humanity".

‘Atlantis remains firmly embedded in our collective psyche.’

Author Mara Powers has spent almost 30 years exploring the labyrinth of ancient civilizations. Her decision to turn it all into a high concept, visionary fantasy series stems from her study of the esoteric depiction of Atlantis. With the other half of her research rooted in the secular, it was the best way to illustrate both aspects of this fascinating legend. Her work is the legacy of the legend. She regularly migrates between Los Ange

If you are a fan of fantasy fiction like I am, then you will definitely enjoy 'Shadows of Atlantis: Awakening' by Mara Powers. It provides a unique take on the story of the mythical city of Atlantis, whilst weaving in a powerful love story, and plenty of supernatural peril. The plot focuses on Brigette who must travel to Atlantis to meet her betrothed, which is essential to the continued functioning of the Crystal Grid – the source of life to ten kingdoms. When she arrives she meets a man and fi ...more

I have a real interest in mythology after studying it in college, so I was definitely drawn to Shadows of Atlantis as the reviews stated that historical legend and fact was weaved into the plot. I had high hopes for the first in Mara Power's fantasy saga and I was not disappointed. The scenes were set beautifully with detailed descriptions – I could almost see the ancient city of Atlantis with my own eyes. Additionally, Power has created two protagonists – Brigette and D'Vinid' that you cannot h ...more

I really enjoyed this book. I haven't read fantasy or sci-fi in a long time. Atlantis is a marvelously complex and detailed world. I wish that more of the history of Atlantis was given because I felt lost at times. I also want to know more about the Watchers. There is a lot of room for a prequel if the author desires. There are many interesting characters that I hope will be developed further in later books. This series has a lot of potential.

Brigette and D'Vinid, the two main characters, with different backgrounds, lead us through Atlantis a peaceful, idyllic place and paradise. Atlantis is run by Crystal Grid energized by the psychic power of its citizens. The grid is in danger now and Brigitte can be the only key to save this beautiful, unique place.
This book is excellent for every fan of fantasy and mythology. Mara Powers did a great job with pacing and keeping the reader on the edge. An absolutely fantastic read that had me turn

I won a free download of the Kindle edition of this book through Goodreads Firstreads. I only made it about 24% of the way through this. I kept losing track of just who was who and what was going on. I'm sure the author was going of mysterious and mystical, but it really missed the mark for me.

What a great first novel! Powers clearly is passionate about Atlantis, and does a great job creating and building a world for us to roam in. The world is very well-developed, along with the characters. The history and culture in the book is enough to draw us in, but Powers manages to drag us in deeper with skillful writing and bits of real history. It’s enough to have made me forget that I was reading a book, and felt a part of her universe. It’s hard to really focus on anything other the amazin ...more

This great and imaginative book from author Mara Powers will totally draw you in to its world of wonders and mythical elements with the heroine being Brigitte and her brother Lukias as they are taken by some group called the Watchers to Atlantis (yes, Aquaman anyone, haha) to search for the one who will establish an alliance or something like that between their two worlds. Brigitte finds herself drawn to a mysterious man-creature by the name of D’vinid who seem to also eye her for his own intere ...more

Shadows of Atlantis: Awakening by Mara Powers takes this legend into new and different territory. It appears that the author has researched the legend of Atlantis extensively, and this shows in the writing. This book is full of the metaphysical, new inventions and technology, and fantasy, all captured in this epic tale. With a wonderfully put together story that plays off of history, as well as mythological history, the author has done her research. Great characters, along with a compelling story ...more

I received a copy as a Goodreads giveaway.

The story revolves around D'Vinid, a self-absorbed, broody individual, who thinks just like all self-absorbed, broody individuals, that his problems are worse than anyone else's problems. If this was the whole story, I would have stopped reading it by page 20. But to have this person placed in the setting of Atlantis, a land that the author wisely chooses not to be as idyllic as the descriptions of Plato, creates for an interesting tale. And after meetin

Mara Powers debut novel, "Shadows of Atlantis" is descriptive, well-written and a thing of brilliance. The Atlantean realm and characters that she has dreamed up are unique and engaging. Prepare to be immersed in a story and plot thick in power(tripping) and the fates. Ms. Powers must have an awesome editing and proofcopying team, as this story of fair length is almost completely free of typos and apparent errors. This was another book I really liked the sound of, but felt didn't live up to my expectations as I read it.

I wasn't quite sure what the main plot of the story was. I felt there was too much going on that wasn't drawn to a conclusion and that there were too many secondary characters and side plots.

I really liked being able to see the different types of technology on the island and it was also intrigu

I LOVED this version of Atlantis. It's definitely a very high fantasy concept, with its futuristic technology that goes far beyond basic medieval devices. The "hoverboard-like" devices in this story immediately brought to mind Back to the Future, but with a touch of Tony Hawk thrown in. A whole lot of fun!

The character of D'Vinid was well-written, as were most of the supporting characters. I found Brigitte to be just a tad too "feminine" (the clichéd femininity, rather than a real human woman) f

I got this book through a giveaway.
Started off really slow. Not a whole lot seemed to be moving forward. Then having to check on terms slowed the reading process for me.
But once you started to get the terms and characters down the read picks up.
Story starts slow but by the end it was really exciting and I wanted it to continue... But it ended.
There are going to be more books and I am excited to continue the series.
I would recommend this book.
Interesting ideas. Cool characters.

I have always been fascinated with Atlantis. I discovered it when I was sixteen during a phase where I was dissatisfied with my religion. I spent a lot of time in the library, studying books on various world religions. The study of Hinduism led me to past lives, and then to the new age section where I found the work of Edgar Cayce. He was known as the sleeping prophet, and was famous for his past ...more
