This is not necessarily a book to read straight through but like many references books, something to dip into for specific information. In general, I found the book to be of very limited value and possibly not worth the price for most people. Disclosure: I received an advance copy for review purposes.

I found many of the brands to be unavailable locally and I am not interested in ordering online. I’ve been gluten free for over 30 years and as far as ordering my GF food goes, I’ve been there and done that. Now that there are plentiful offerings in the stores in so many cities and communities, I’d be more interested in only nationally available products, although I realize that would really limit the entries. I have no interest in the opinions or advice of the so-called influencers. In addition, I didn’t agree with selection many of the allegedly “best” products, with several of (in my opinion) many of the “best” brands not having been in the running.

Having said all that, I can remember the major trauma of having to rethink my diet and recipes (and to a large degree, my lifestyle) when I was first diagnosed and can see where this can be a valuable resource for the newly diagnosed. I would warn anyone looking to try new products to take the ratings with a grain of salt as taste is an extremely personal thing. One person’s “best” may very well be your “worst”. And while I found the advice section to be of little or no interest or use, someone new to living GF might find it extremely valuable simply to know that they are not alone. I think things have improved greatly since the 1980s but telling family and friends that you can’t go to a restaurant because there is nothing safe for you to eat or asking that from now on the turkey stuffing not go into the bird but be cooked on the side as dressing will always be difficult. No matter how many GF products line the grocery store shelves.

To the editors of this book: Rather than an arbitrary “best” designation why not have “crispiest” or “most flavorful” pretzels — two categories that express different desirable aspects of a food, in this case pretzels, so that the reader has a truer idea of why one brand might be considered better than another — by criteria they can relate to and prioritize. How about value? So many products are ridiculously expensive that price is a factor that many need to consider. And if you are interested in buying online, what e-tailers have the best prices, selection, fastest delivery, etc? I think that the usefulness of this guide could be considerably enhanced.

A gold mine of information

Once I started reading I couldn't stop. The family's personal story was compelling and their willingness to share with others what they learned is wonderful. This little book is full of good information, well organized and easy to use. I've got it on my phone for my next shopping trip. Also appreciate the travel tips and support resources. Bless you for making this available!

I just skimmed it to see what is like - looking forward to going back through it again!

I just skimmed the book to see what is like and tried to write a review but couldn't my Kindle to let me finish the review. I can't read any more until I finish it and hope this will work. So I like the book but not how the comments section is working!
