This was a great, intriguing novel! It's hard to believe this is Laurel Hightower's first. She seamlessly mixes supernatural horror with thriller and mystery elements to create a fast-paced story that had me from page one. Her writing style is easy to fall into and equally as hard to get out of. All the characters, especially the protagonist Rose, were written as though they were real people - rich backgrounds, flaws, insecurities, etc. I'll definitely be eager to dive into whatever Hightower ch ...more

This is a debut novel? No way, really? I loved this book. We get a strong female lead, we learn how much of a bad ass she is early on. Her past haunts her and we learn more and more about that as the book goes on. She has a small circle, only letting a few past her defenses. As a reader/introvert this just rang of home. The story starts hot and burns steady - but the last 100 pages - Laurel keeps applying the accelerant ( why does goodreads think i spelled that wrong ) and we reach inferno level ...more

Whispers in the Dark was interesting and creepy!
I loved reading about Rose (a S.W.A.T. sniper) and how she coped with the emotional trauma that came from surviving a rough religious childhood and surviving a mysterious fire that killed her father and brother. Rose thinks she's left the past behind, but it comes back in the form of a brother she never knew and whispers of the undead that grow louder and more menacing.

Whispers In The Dark is the debut novel from the awesome Laurel Hightower, it is a perfect genre cocktail; Horror, Thriller and Mystery a must read for fans of any of those genres!

I am blown away by Laurel Hightower’s first novel, Whispers in the Dark. Very impressive.

The fabulous cover fits the dark story on the pages inside…the doors of hell opening up to her, calling her, the dead demanding her attention. Some warn her, others want…something from her.

Is her son in danger? Her daughter? Her friends and coworkers? All the characters have their part to play and I must say, I wouldn’t mind killing a couple of them myself, in the book of course. lol<

About 3-4 nights a week I have to close up the music shop I work at. I've done this for the last 5 years or so. Closing consists of locking the front door, turning off the master set of lights, and letting myself out the back door, about 40 feet down the hall. After reading the first 50 or so pages of Whispers in the Dark, Laurel Hightower's debut novel, I headed off to work. At the end of the night, I went to lock up as usual. I locked the front door, hit the lights, turned around to leave, and ...more

Very rarely will I read a book twice (and then revisit a few scenes) before I write a review, but some of the scenes "walked" on my mind so I wanted to revisit them prior to writing this review.

One must imagine writing horror works is a challenging task – veer too far, and you risk losing the reader as your work becomes no longer sufficiently grounded, but if you do not push the envelope enough, the only horror you present to your reader is that of the mundane. Blissfully, Laurel Hightower’s de

This is the second time in years that I’m legitimately stunned that a book is actually a debut! Yes, lots of debuts are impressive, but just once in a while, you come across one that blows others out of the water. Whispers in the Dark is one of those few. I even double checked Amazon and Goodreads to make sure there wasn’t some other title lurking around with Laurel Hightower’s name on it.
Whispers in the Dark is original, gripping, and absolutely unforgettable. That’s not to mention that t

This is a book that truly blends genres! In this case, all my favourites; Horror, Thriller, Suspense, Paranormal, and even a smidge of Crime Fiction!

My initial thoughts? Wow! Just wow!

I knew when I checked out this book’s reviews that it was going to be a good, but Whispers in the Dark far exceeded my expectations!

It really is hard to classify as it’s a beautiful blend of all of my my favourite genres, the dark ones, and that in itself, makes this book truly s

This is a very exciting and rather spooky book. It draws you into the action right away. I found the scary bits to be so scary that there are certain rooms at home I'd rather not go while I was reading Whispers in the Dark!

There was always something happening. You won't get bored reading this book. The main character Rose is a strong character and is not stereotyped in any way, so it definitely makes for some great reading.

This is a great book. It's definitely well worth reading.

This book was a great blend of paranormal, mystery and thriller. I had a hard time putting it down, but Motherhhood calls and one must answer. I, however, found that reading this before bed was probably not a wise decision - especially since the main character, Rose, is a Mother and her children become involved with the Whispers...

I greatly enjoyed the plot and the way Hightower tied everything together rather seemlessly. I finished the book feeling like all my questions were answere

Whispers in the Dark by Laurel Hightower found it’s way to my TBR the same way many books have lately, discovery through Bookstagram or Twitter. An interesting synopsis, excellent word of mouth and a beautiful cover made this book shoot up my TBR pile faster than most do. I started the book and fell in love with it almost instantly. This is a book that I own a physical copy and a kindle copy of. I took both copies with me wherever I went to make sure whatever scenario I was in, I’d be able to re ...more

If you’re still looking for that chilling read this spooky season then stop right there and pick up Whispers in the Dark . This is definitely one of those books that will send chills up and down your spine and make you think twice before going into dark spaces alone.

The story follows the life of Rose McFarland, a sniper for Memphis’ S.W.A.T team. Rose is a badass female protagonist. She’s damn good at her job, and when she’s not using her expert marksman skills, she’s co-parenting h

For those horror and thriller fans out there, this is the perfect mashup of those two genres! WHISPERS IN THE DARK isn’t what I was expecting and I absolutely loved all of the twists and turns that Hightower threw at us.

A bad ass female protagonist and plenty of action and thrills to go around. I almost don’t want to describe too much because I loved going into this knowing as little as possible. Paran

The plot itself is a paranormal mystery horror that gives you the chills, sparks your curiosity, and one that you won’t guess the twist to trust me. You’re thrown right into the action from the first page as the protagonist has her sniper rifle trained on a disturbed and dangerous man and that’s just the first page. You’re taken on a journey with Rose learning about her heartbreaking past and the darkness that has always followed her. The creeping dread that you can feel coming from the first ch ...more

This was one spooky read to know all the people the main character has killed in her job as a S.W.A.T sniper all come back as ghosts. I got goosebumps then.

Rose was a sniper who could manage her job and family well. She had a good support system too. Her past left its scars physically and emotionally when she lost her family in a fire. One routine job with hostage situation caused her world to be turned upside down when she saw the dead man as a ghost. Soon her son was affected. Eerie...

I am absolutely amazed by author Laurel Hightower and her ability to bring some of the most amazing characters and storyline to life in her debut novel. Whispers in the Dark was a thrilling page turner that I could not put down! In a world where strong female protagonists are difficult to find, Laurel found an incredible, empathetic, and amazing female protagonist to frame the story and lend a powerful voice to the events that unfolded throughout this story. I also loved the amount of detail and ...more

Whispers in the Dark is such a strongly written story that its quality overcame the ways in which this book really wasn't for me. While I was into the relationships, family dynamic, and ghostly happenings, the book had to work at winning me over anytime it stepped into SWAT or departmental scenes, including the opening scene. That it did is a testament to Laurel Hightower's skill. Our protagonist Rose is engaging, her plight a sinking mire she's been escaping all her life, and her approach to th ...more

Laurel Hightower's debut novel is engaging, fun, and creepy. The book introduces us to a strong female lead, Rose McFarland, and her history of hearing what she calls "The Whispers." The characters in the novel are very well developed enticing the reader to invest in the plot and their story. This is a novel that will keep fans of mystery novels engaged as well as those that enjoy ghost and horror stories.

I’m normally a slow reader but I blew through this book. I couldn’t put it down. Real people that I quickly came to know and care for facing creepy and often terrifying struggles. I actually got up in the middle of the night to read just a little more.

As someone who doesn’t typically read the horror genre, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The characters were interesting and well written. The story kept me fascinated from start to finish. It was very creepy and I don’t think I will forget the Whispers anytime soon. I will definitely look for more from this author!

The only negative thing I have to say is that I feel like the book could be shortened up a little. But holy crap this book has some creepy aspects to it. I love that the book has a kick ass woman that's self assured despite her past.

I liked how this book switched between first and third person - since it gave more of an all-round view, and enabled more inclusivity.
A lot of this book was focused on plot rather than character development - the pace was fast, but one that doesn't leave anything out. I got a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This story starts off with a very well detailed hostage/SWAT team standoff and it is immediately intense. The writing in this scene, and frankly every other scene in this novel, is very scenic and detailed to the smallest moment. Even the act of Rose steadying her hand for a shot was very detailed. Throughout the novel as it takes place in the present, you get Rose’s backstory and your introduction to what are known throughout this story as the Whispers. Rose’s backstory takes place in small par ...more
