This installation provided the first time I've seen both Hakumei and Mikochi with their hair pinned up: they have cute little pointy ears! Hakumei also had her hair cut, which I wasn't a fan of because it's far too neat for her personality, but it looks like it's growing back pretty fast.
This continues to be an adorable slice of life on the miniature side of the spectrum type of series. With a whole hidden world full of cute little people and talking animals this Japanese type of story reminds me of David the Gnome but even more fun. Come for the story and be mesmerized by the incredible art work. :)
Due to the short story style of the series I will now present you a spoiler free listing of what to expect. A Day in Swimsuits "After a heavy rainfall that isolated our duo from everyone else for several days they discover the waters have not receded even if the rain has stopped. Time to get some grub and lessons all in one." Rose and Shears "Jada gets a visit from an old acquaintance and we see a glimpse into her past." Shells and Noise "Grilling shellfish in shell is dangerous but the adventurous might be lucky enough to discover its flavor." Traveler's Clothes "With a contest for designing clothes coming up Mikochi is a bundle of nerves when she discovers who she is competing against." The Trials of the Librarian "More struggles from a Librarian who is super efficient at his job whether finding what you need or trying to keep order." Siblings and Work "The badger siblings are having disagreements again and our ever helpful duo are going to try to get them back together again." The Bar, Late at Night Sen finds herself at a bar after getting lost in the city and discovers some new flavors she might enjoy." Teacher and Bricks Hakumei has some plans for a bigger outdoor oven but sometimes experience comes from sharing the work with others."
As an Iyashikei (new word I learned today) these stories are generally feel good even though sometimes trials do occur on the journey of day to day life. In addition to the stories don't forget the mini details between chapters that flesh out the world even more. :)
This series is incredible. I’ve never experienced something so… soothing. Because of this series, I’ve learned about a genre of manga/anime called "iyashikei", which in Japanese, literally translates to "healing" and refers to manga that aims to soothe and comfort readers by focusing on positive, calming themes with little conflict, often highlighting the beauty of everyday life and nature.(internet definition). Each night I look forward to reading a chapter or two before bed to quiet my mind and brush off the worries of the day.
The stories usually go at a slow pace and revolve around a cozy mini plot. Each character is interesting in their own way and adds something unique to the story. And the artwork!!! It’s incredible in its detail and so cute! My only wish is to see more in color! I don’t want this series to ever end 🥹 I haven’t wanted to purchase a book series in a long time, but I’m seriously considering doing so for this one. I’m already imagining how delightful it would be to read them on a sunny day picnic…
Read this sixth volume of Takuto Kashiki's Hakumei & Mikochi Series for Reddit Fantasy's 2023 Bingo Square Mundane Jobs, the protagonists are a tailor and a carpenter. This book qualifies for hard mode as it does not take place on Earth. Using Volume 6 to 10 for the Food Themed Bingo card.

Hakumei builds a raft so the ladies can navigate the floodwaters to get food, the goal is to get to Dondoya! They get help from some rats who push the raft for them.
Chapter 35.2 - The Swimming Instructor At Dondoya, Shinato and Mimari are both on the roof, they agree to make food provided the ladies get ingredients and build a scaffold so the roof isn't damaged. Unfortunately, Hakumei confesses she can't swim, so Shinato volunteers Mimari as Hakumei's swim instructor. Hilarity ensues.
Chapter 36 - Rose and Shears [No Anime Adaptation] Jada's old classmate, now the actor Carnelian, arrives at her shop to get a haircut! The ladies help Jada disguise herself as she doesn't want to see him, but he's so pushy he insists on getting a haircut from "Jada's apprentice."
Chapter 37 - Shells and Noise [No Anime Adaptation] Hakumei and Mikochi find out cooking closed shellfish is outlawed because it's dangerous, but it's an open secret that the locals still cook Arabi's hidden specialty at a rooftop shellfish bake! They embark on a journey to get to the rooftop for a delicious meal, with the help of kind locals.
Chapter 38 - Traveler's Clothes [No Anime Adaptation] Mikochi enters a Fashion Design competition by making Traveler's Clothes for Hakumei, but when she finds out her idol Night Snail has entered the competition, she loses all confidence. Hakumei reminds Mikochi she IS a good designer, I mean, she did make Sen an outfit that was well received.
Chapter 39 - The Trials of the Librarian [No Anime Adaptation] The poor librarian is having a hard day, dealing with patrons trying to sleep at the library, patrons wanting books that are currently out or unavailable and some books being damaged by scribbles!! It isn't until Hakumei comes along and says something that his day brightens up.
Chapter 40 - Siblings and Work [No Anime Adaptation] Suzumi orders Keito to make green tea Canales knowing he hates green tea. When he returns to get his basket, he hears her treats all her other suppliers politely. Angered by the double standard, he quits, I don't blame him either. Suzumi enlists Hakumei and Mikochi to get Keita back.
Chapter 41 - The Bar, Late At Night [No Anime Adaptation] Necromancer Sen, in her lovely Mikochi outfit, ends up at Honey Manor's bar late at night, where Conju tries to get her to open up as Bartender Shunka ensures they both get the drinks they're craving
Chapter 42 - Teacher and Bricks [No Anime Adaptation] Hakumei asks Iwashi-dono to help her build an outdoor kitchen. Ever the professional, Iwashi starts a draft of plans, and before you can say it, the inevitable downfall of many a project begins, I'm talking about this.
Iwashi ends up going all out, even getting the President on board, who teases him that just as he learned from the President, he is now subtly teaching Hakumei!
Pretty soon, the "simple" outdoor kitchen has dual layer plumbing, a FLOOR, a roof, and a new brick oven! If it was me, I couldn't even be mad at this.
Bonus Chapter - A Day at Work, The Animation Edition The author is happy his work is getting an anime, but he feels a little useless. Then the director asks him what kind of animal he would be, and we find out the result in this little extra bonus comic clip. Really needed the cozy vibes this series offers and this volume didn’t disappoint. There was a lot of variety in the stories and perspectives which made it feel longer, in a good way, than it was. I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of their tiny lives in the woods 🍂
As this series matures, it's easing into deeper and more complex examinations of interpersonal relationships. It pairs very well with the always-incredible detail of the drawings and characterization. I'm thrilled that I'm barely now than halfway through the available volumes.
My favorite chapter in this volume was the one where they had to find the shellfish speakeasy party on the roof. It's basically the biggest open secret, but it won't be a Hakumei & Mikochi story if it isn't needlessly complicated, but with a happy ending nonetheless.
We see Hakumei learning to swim! It is so cute. And we get to see some of the clothes the people wear and their designs. This manga is quite well drawn and the details are wonderful.
Super cosy, super sweet, and I loved every moment of this. Seeing all the events, read the short stories after the chapters, the gorgeous arts, fantastic characters. I love this series.
My favorite short story in this edition was the one with Hakumei learning how to swim. There was once again a lot of development with side characters and there were also several stories without the two main characters. These chapters where Hakumei and Mikochi only made an appearance as side characters to the story were my favorite.
