An absolutely wonderful introduction to needlefelting and flat needfelted works. While I approached this book with intermediate knowledge of needlefelting, I still got loads of inspiration from the projects featured and picked up a couple of new techniques. Ives makes needlefelting very approachableand easy to understand. Her designs and projects have a contemporary sense and aesthetic, much more so than other needlefelting books I have checked out. Anyone with an interest in picking up a new craft or exploring fiber arts should check out this book.
The finished projects are quite lovely but I think the basic reader will definitely struggle with achieving anything near the results that the author/artist displays. The author absolutely understands shading, perspective, color, form, and composition and has that artist's eye. The simpler projects, showing basic geometric shapes, are achievable. The clear instructions and plentiful photos are great. I also think that the time estimations are on the low side!
I was lucky enough to meet this artist at a pop-up event in Bentonville. She is super talented! The book itself is a visual treat, and included are easy instructions for making 2D art with roving wool. They look like paintings with great detail, but she uses wool on a canvas to create her art. She gives simple instructions and patterns - for beginners to experienced fiber artists.
I was quite disappointed because it was a very basic book and most of the projects were not painterly at all. The project on the front cover doesn't even feature in the book!! Elements of it are but split across two projects. Given there are only 16 projects that means 1/8th of them (12.5%) is just some of the project on the cover.
Very detailed, super creative. If you have been wanting to learn how to needle felt then this book walks you through the entire process. Will definitely be making more 2d projects
