Justice #7
Night Justice
She killed a man. Or did she?
USA Today bestselling Judge Willa Carson returns in this fast-paced mystery filled with great characters, humor, and more twists and turns than a roller coaster.
It could happen to anyone.
Driving home after a long, exhausting work week, Judge Willa Carson is horrified when she hits a man with her car.
She jumps out to help, but it’s too late. He’s not breathing and she can’t revive him.
Famous Restaurant Owner’s Wife Kills Pedestrian is the top click bait headline for every citizen journalist with a smartphone video looking to make it big on social media.
But is it true?
Privately, the coroner says Evan Hayden was as good as dead from an overdose of toxic heroin when he lunged in front of Willa’s car. But the scandal mongers don’t know or care about the legal nuances.
Relentless gawkers and paid protesters swarm George’s Place and drag Judge Willa’s reputation into the gutter, where gleeful power brokers who want her gone for good seize their chance.
Mercilessly pursued by the vultures, she’s forced to abandon her work and flee her home to uncover the truth.
As Willa burrows deeper into the mystery of Evan Hayden’s death amid too-good-to-be-true sports celebrities, savage money managers, and upscale heroin addicts, she discovers too many motives for murder.
Can she unearth what really happened that dark and rainy night, restore her reputation, save George’s restaurant, and get her world back onto its axis?
Or is Willa’s life as Tampa’s youngest and most flamboyant federal judge over and done?
If you like to read a twisty, clever “who done it” that will have you scratching your head until the end is revealed, Night Justice and Judge Willa Carson are for you.

Night Justice - a review by Rosemary Kenny
The 11th and final Judge Willa Carson novel, Night Justice, is perhaps Diane Capri's finest and most fitting as her excellent character's swansong.
An unfortunate road traffic accident on a wet and windy night sees Willa fighting not only for her professional life as Tampa's youngest ever court circuit judge, but also to save the damaged (by association), reputation of husband George's famous restaurant going down the pan with hers.
Can she get to the truth, backed up by the results of the inquest and the help of her friend and associate Chief of Police, Ben?
Get your copy of this exciting, unputdownable, sure to be best-seller from the inimitable Queen of the Mystery Thriller, Ms Diane Capri and buckle up for a wild ride full of twists and turns, that will keep you guessing to the very end, in Night Justice.

New York Times bestselling author Diane Capri, probably best known for her series “The Hunt for Jack Reacher,” certainly knows what might captivate a reader and keep the person turning pages. That said, her Judge Willa Carson series is quite different and I actually prefer it on the overall. In part, that's probably because I'm not that big a fan of Lee Child's original series that features Jack Reacher. But never mind that. Back to "Night Justice."
The basic premise is straightforward and occurs very quickly in the book: Willa is driving home and strikes a man, leaving him dead, and Willa absolutely horrified. It all happened in a nanosecond, and it appeared that the man himself might have almost been shoved in front of her car. But that doesn't mean she can prove it. Meanwhile, because she's a federal judge and not particularly liked by her superior in the court system, she's immediately suspended when an intense investigation is launched. Willa can't work, and she's hounded by the media. She incessantly calls the primary police investigator, who is neither friend nor foe. When answers aren't forthcoming quickly, she does everything she can on her own to reach out to people who may be somehow linked to the pedestrian's demise.
As I said, it's a great storyline, and the novel is fast-paced and straightforward. No jumping in and out of time, or switching to multiple viewpoints. Willa is on her own and it's up to her to move the investigation along. As she does, she talks to a lot of people in an intent to understand what, if any, motives they might have had in causing a horrendous accident — if it was an accident at all.
The only element in the novel that occasionally made me want to grind my teeth was the author's overuse of describing many of the things that only rich people might actually relate to or care about. Willa and her husband, the owner of a high-end restaurant favored by celebrities and the like, are rich. Okay, fine. But do we really need to know every detail of what they eat, from the opening appetizers to the salads to the main course, etc? In my mind? No. Those details merely slowed the story down, as did Willa's own propensity to describe what she wore each day. It seemed like "filler" material to me, and not necessary to the movement of the story itself.
But that's me, and it's not a deal breaker for what otherwise is a genuinely good story with riveting moments. Judge Carson? You come back again in another story. Just leave your pearls at home and what you ate for dinner out. That's it. That's my only nit-picker. Your mileage may vary.

I enjoy Diane Capri’s Hunt for Justice Series featuring Judge Willa Carson, and Night Justice is an excellent addition to the series. Willa is driving home after a long and tedious day at the Courthouse when she senses something like a big garbage bag flying in front of her car, then hears a thud and realizes that she has hit a person.
She is distraught, yet administers CPR hoping to save this person. It starts there and hold on as Willa faces many more challenges along the way. Will the person survive and who is he? Of course, she receives support from her loving and very popular restauranteur husband George, her office assistant Augustus and although it sometimes seems begrudgingly, from Sheriff Ben Hathaway. Will Chief Justice (CJ) Osgood Richardson, Willa’s long time nemesis, use this accident as a way to remove Willa from the bench? Willa is determined to clear her name and do everything possible to ensure this situation doesn’t harm the reputation of George’s five star restaurant. Night Justice is fast paced and the well developed storyline held my interest from the first to the final page. The ending did leave me with some questions so hopefully another Hunt for Justice book will be released soon.

Willa is driving home late at night from work and a body hits her windshield and dies enroute to the hospital. Evan Hayden worked as a financial planner for stars and sports figures and was an asshole. Nobody at worked liked him, but would someone kill him because of it? Evan had toxic heroin in his system, but all his co-workers said he didn’t do drugs. This prompts Willa to clear her name of killing a man with her car and hopes to avoid losing her judgeship over this accident. Several people in her department would like to get rid of her because of her always seeming to be in the papers and her bold personality.

This was only my second Diane Capri novel that I have had the opportunity to read.
That being said, not sure of how I feel about a book that the main character is involved in a tragic accident (the vehicular homicide of another character), is only given a cursory glance by the local police in relation to this death but then proceeds to solve the whole thing by herself.
Given that, I can only give this three stars out of five.
As with all reviews, this is only my five cents worth.

As always, a great read by Diane Capri. Most of her stories involve murder, colorful characters who may or may not commit murder, yet is homey as she and her husband have a close relationship which I enjoy. I look forward to reading more.

This is the only one of her books I have read. A perfectly pleasant, straightforward mystery featuring a judge trying to clear her name when she is involved in a fatal traffic accident. Not comparable to some of my favourite authors, but still readable.
