One lesson to be learned from Mercury in Retrograde: If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Aralyn, just released from the galaxy's worst prison, gets an offer she can't resist. One more job as a smuggler and she will be able to retire. That is, if the job won't retire her first...

Mercury in Retrograde was an okay book. It had a bit of everything in it, which was probably also why I couldn't connect to the story as much as I'd liked. The cha

This book had everything I love in a sci fi romance - an interesting, fast-paced plot, an outlaw heroine, and fun world building. I enjoyed meeting the different characters that populate the author's world and found them complex and varied whether they were good or bad. There is lots here for readers who enjoy a solid, satisfying sci fi premise without hitting the reader over the head with scientific jargon. I look forward to reading more from this author!

Aralyn stared up at the stars above them. Once a place that had held untold fortune and adventure, she'd recalled the delight at setting out on her first run; tightness and happiness and fear warring in her belly.

What an unexpected gem of a book! I requested this book on Netgalley because of the plot, but when I came to read it was put off (stupidly) by the cover. But I am so glad I read this. Mercury in Retrograde has unpredictable action, unbelievable heists, and an

Who knew the Solar System had so many hackers, prison heists, and shotgun toting girls with sass? Mercury in Retrograde was such a colorful, fun, and fast-paced read. It gave me back everything I loved about watching Firefly and Cowboy Bebop: an edgy sci-fi world full of beaten down spaceships, two-timing smugglers, bounties, and most importantly an eclectic group of foul-mouthed outlaws-turned-heroes.

Although I loved the male characters in this book (particularly Riordan’s unstoppable hacking

I was immediately drawn in to the plot and characters of this fast-paced story complete with all the elements of injustice, inhumanity and a chance for redemption that makes a story great to me. Aralyn and Caden both have father issues that drive the plot and hint of more to come. The cast of characters and worlds is fun and diverse and serve the story well. After finishing, I am left wanting more!

Focusing more on character than detailed nuances of technology, Walther creates a science-fiction tale with as much tension as a spy thriller.

Aralyn Solari used to be one of the best smugglers of her generation – until the authorities suddenly ended up one step ahead. After three years in the galaxy’s worst prison, all she wants is a quiet life; and a discreet courier job that will earn her enough to retire seems to offer it. However, the first person she meets on landing is Caden Ma

Fresh out of prison for smuggling, she believes she is only going to do one more smuggling job, make big bucks and then call it quits. But her one last job is a set up, and she's thrown in jail ag

Review of Mercury in Retrograde

Aralyn Solari is a runner (criminal) who just got out of Tartarys, a prison aptly named. (Tartarus was the Greek version of hell for those who committed heinous crimes.), and doing one last run that she be fairly easy. (Famous last word.) She’s feisty, smart, and brave. All of which come into play and are needed characteristics if she’s to survive the rest of this story.

Caden Madigan was Aralyn’s partner, in crime and in love, once, but, som

Mercury in Retrograde was a very enjoyable book that did a good job setting up the series to come. We've got an engaging main character in Aralyn with an interesting past to pull from (disowned by parents, broken heart that might be healed, a career in smuggling, and jail time). The three characters in the supporting cast were not as fully developed, but I'm hoping for that in future volumes. They, too, have interesting histories that can feed the series.

It was nice that Aralyn and Caden were r

A very enjoyable read. The story held my interest from the first page. The characters were all well-defined. I had no trouble knowing who they were right away. Aralyn is by turns, feisty and vulnerable, brave and fearful and always conflicted about the trustworthiness of her ex-boyfriend. Set-up falsely and sent to the prison-from-hell, she is just released. All she wants is to do is one last job for a huge fee and disappear into life of peace and tranquility. This is not to be. She is faced wit ...more

New author for me and honestly I think I liked the book. It had a lot going on in it. I think the only real issue I had was everyone was so busy doing this and that, that the character development and some of the stories about each character was kinda lost. This is a purely action kind of book which I am not against in any way...I actually like them and this did have quite a bit of a variety in it. Maybe a little too much at the start of a series at least for me. It looks to be an interesting se ...more

Mercury in Retrograde is very much a romance novel - yes, it has a sci fi setting but all the romance conventions are here: lack of hard science, no edginess, sweet personalities, misunderstandings coming in the way of true love, and a focus on relationships rather than conflict. It made the writing problematic for me: about half way through, too many plot points felt either very deus ex machina or completely unlikely/unrealistic/unlikely. As a result,

Sci-Fi Romance with lots of action?
Hell yeah!
Mercury in Retrograde by @merethewalther was a fast paced and fun read about a Runner, who has had lots of trouble with the law already, and gets into even more during this book. This book is literary on the run! The characters are great and we take a trip through space without getting an overload of scientific stuff.
For me the story leaned a little too much on the romance aspect, but if you want to try this genre, this is a good sta

"Mercury in Retrograde" was a good read—especially for lovers of space opera.

Aralyn is a smuggler—runner—who is trying to do one last, high-paying job before leaving the criminal life. However, things go sideways quickly, with more and more complications coming at her. Her past also catches up to her, adding still more issues for Aralyn to cope with.

While a bit slow in places, the book contains plenty of action. There's also a romance subplot to help keep fans of that gen

I have to admit, Sci-fi isn't a genre I would pick out to read, but a friend recommended this to me and I gave it a shot. Wow, I am so glad I did. Mercury in Retrograde is an extremely well written story with a perfect blend of action, character development, romance and imagination. I loved the thought of different planets and the various lifestyles and attributes they contain. I couldn't wait to find out the secrets the next one contained, as the characters jumped from one to the next. It is al ...more

Mercury in Retrograde by Merethe Walther is action packed with slavery, revenge, blackmail and an old love. Aralyn and Cade have history and they have to learn to trust each other again. Aralyn just spent 5 years in prison and she is convinced he is the one who betrayed her and you have a great story while she finds out the truth. The character development is good but at time the story loses its way. There is so much going on it took awhile to feel connected to the story. I liked Aralyn and Cade ...more

I loved this hyper space love story.....the lead character needing to trust what she perceives could be an enemy...her desire to stand strong despite what could be perceived as betrayal. Travelling thru the space like I do the local mall.

It was tender....exciting....with loads of action..... Mystery.....and ultimately defeating her enemy at great cost.

I am hoping there is a second book in this story of overcoming despite the obstacles and remaining faithful to one self. ...more

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, and I'm sorry it took me a while to finish!
An interesting space opera with a good premise, unfortunately I wasn't that invested in the characters. Fair world-building, good writing, and unique characters, but is more serious Sci-Fi than I normally read. I would recommend it to a SF fan who likes meaty books.

Considering that Mercury Rising is a first book, this is a great start. It’s the first part of the adventures of four “bad” kids with truly evil, very powerful parents. Suspenseful and non-stop space opera, with well-set stages, and well developed relationships, the story sprints forward across the solar system in stolen spaceships and constant fist fights.

I must warn you. This is space opera and thus melodramatic, sacrificing depth and realism for action and romance. SF fans might b

A fun, action filled read. This book had me hooked from the beginning. I loved the world the writer created full of runners, rapscallions, and adventure.

Aralyn is a feisty smuggler who swears she is only going to do one more job then call it quits. Little does she know, the job is a set up and she's about to be on the run for her very freedom.

With no one to trust, she finds herself depending on an unlikely bunch, including her ex who she may or may not still have feelings for.
