Ylum shakes with the Merk's rage! Nexus sent Gucci-trained Quatro assassins Kreed and Sinclair to do his work of killing mass-murderers, but since then they've butchered over three thousand people in pursuit of two hundred! Now afflicted with a Quatro disease that will not allow them to stop, the pair are demolishing Mars and Nexus must intervene before the planet's authorities go nuclear. Sundra joins an intrigue in the Crystal Ballroom's library, Nexus infiltrates a Chernenko prison, and the "young" chairperson of the Central Committee - Konstantin - escapes captivity with Clausius the Slaver. Meanwhile, General Loomis's daughters plot their revenge!

The feature story in these issues is amazing, just off the charts terrific. The back-up stories are not as strong as earlier volumes.

Simply the best superhero series ever, and it's right in the midst of perhaps its best run. Baron does a brilliant job characterizing the alien cultures and societies, making them distinct and nuanced, but still reminiscent of humanity, thus reflecting humanity's foibles. The action is great, and it's great to see Sundra shine in the defense of the Library at Alexandria when Horatio is defeated (to be clear, Sundra uses wisdom and intelligence to succeed - Horatio uses force, and fails). The political landscape of Ylum continues to develop with no clear answers or easy answers provided, the youth culture is formed, and Horatio learns that he cannot shirk his responsibilities as Nexus.

Paul Smith draws two chapters, very well, and Steve Rude's so damn good that Smith looks positively forgettable when juxtaposed against Rude's pages.

The Hammer back-ups are decent entertainment, though sometimes poorly drawn.

Very highly recommended.

Though this comic remains fairly episodic throughout this volume, a number of threads are beginning to wind together into something greater ... and there are a few great issues in this volume, including the quattro attack on Mars, the visit to the great library, and the visit to the church's of cherneko. It's also a treat seeing the return of both Konstatin and the General's Daughters -- Nexus needs enemies and these are great ones.

More than any volume since the first, this one walks to the line between good and great.

The interplanetary executioner Nexus must cope with not only taking out powerful villains but negotiate tricky political waters and defends religion against the Sov oppressors. This 1980s/1990s series holds up, though the USSR analogy hasn't aged so well.

The treads that lead up to issues 50-51 are starting to wind together in earnest in this volume, which makes it well worth reading. The politics of Ylum and the web, the moral compromises the characters make and the consequences of those compromises all hold together very well.
