NIGHT VISION: An Oupire Romance

Rate this book
When an oupire artist named Lily Schmidt encounters a century-old vampire at a museum in the heart of Brookton’s oupire community, she is scared beyond death. As rival forms of the undead, vampires and oupires have a long history of mistrust. But Carl Eckhart’s explanation that he only came to town to see his late wife’s pottery exhibit seems plausible and, with his Victorian-era charm, he disarms Lily’s fear—she cannot resist seeing him again. Before long, Lily decides to leave her own people and move to Carl’s Pennsylvania farmhouse in the vampire town of Oldenburg, where the two begin a passionate affair.

Sadly, Lily and Carl’s pastoral happiness is soon threatened as eyewitness reports of a dangerous vampire spy circulate around Brookton. Beyond putting themselves in jeopardy, Lily realizes her affair with Carl might lead to renewed conflict and endanger Lily’s beloved sire, Dave Rosenstein, who alone knows their whereabouts. And when Carl discovers Lily’s family might be linked to an unsolved 1913 vampire murder, it heightens her fear that she has inadvertently set tragic events in motion.

Then Dave disappears. Is he a victim of revenge? Or is he still protecting Lily? If anything happens to Dave, Lily is responsible. Only a secret vampire-oupire alliance can reveal what really happened in 1913 and whether it is connected to Dave’s recent disappearance. With mounting threats against them, Lily and Carl struggle to learn the truth before violence erupts between Brookton and Oldenburg, consuming them and everyone around them.

Artist Lily Schmidt is an oupire and while in a local museum meets a century-old vampire. The encounter scares her to death as there is a history of mistrust between the two undead races. Vampire Carl Eckhart explains that he is only interested in the pottery as it was made by his late wife. Disarming Lily's fear she agrees to see him again. Rapidly Lily decides to leave her home town and go spend some time with Carl where they start a passionate affair. However, everything is threatened when rumours at Lily's home town start about a mysterious vampire spy putting Lily, Carl and even Lily's sire Dave Rosenstein into danger. Then Carl discovers Lily’s family might be linked to an unsolved 1913 vampire murder and Lily's suddenly feels she has started a dreadful chain of events. So when Dave disappears Lily feels responsible - as threats appear from multiple directions it seems that the only thing to save them is a vampire-oupire alliance. Can that work between these old foes?

Wow - this was a great story that started off a little slow but then began to move at a quicker and quicker pace as the passion, mystery and threats increased around their relationship. I loved the focus on the two races, the history and differences between them. There are so many modern day equivalents that could be found between this book and the real world. I loved the way that the differences between oupires and vampires were explained and how it related to the situation between Carl and Lily. There were a lot of details that made the story seem much more real to me and it made it much more enjoyable. I loved the way the story ended and would like to think that there was peace between the races going forward. I'd love to read more in the world between the oupires, vampires and what Lily and Carl become involved in next.

Author Caroline Davis tells the story of Lily Schmidt, an oupire artist who meets a 100-year-old vampire, named Carl Eckhart, while browsing through a museum. After her encounter, Schmidt is spooked. However, both she and the Eckhart soon start an affair and travel to his farmhouse. While everything seems peaceful at first, trouble starts brewing when they learn that vampire spies might be lingering around. In addition to this, both Schmidt and Eckhart start to learn more about each other’s lives, including a possible murder one’s family committed. Besides this, Schmidt discovers Dave Rosenstein, her sire, has disappeared and must search for him before it’s too late.

At 442 pages this book is a little long, but it’s definitely worth the time investment. Davis also writes with a suspenseful style that will keep you quickly flipping through the pages to find out what happens next. This book is ideal for those who enjoy paranormal and romance novels.

This is my favorite book of the year so far!

I will admit that this is the first I have ever heard of Oupires! I found it fascinating to learn the differences between oupires and vampires. I will definitely be reading more about them! I love that this story has a little modern times, mixed with colonial references, it’s a love story with a mystery entangled through out. Both stories slide easily in and out from each other and make for one of the best books I’ve read in a long time! I really wish this was a series so I could immerse myself in the stories of the characters. With all of the different character backgrounds the series could go on forever!! I really look forward to reading more from Caroline Davis! This was truly the perfect mix of love, sex, mystery and fantasy! The characters were all very well created and the storyline is top notch and unique.
