I really enjoyed this audiobook. It had a little something for everybody. What a thrilling alien invasion story. It was almost like The movie Cloverfield meets the video game Dead Island. I found there to be lots of twists and turns throughout this one. There are many side plots which engage nicely with the main alien invasion plot and they all come together at the perfect moment. There is a whole lot of action, a little bit of scary and just enough weird that really makes this one work. The ...more

OH MY GOODNESS, WHAT A FANTASTIC NOVEL! I could hardly stop reading! From the moment I felt sorry for Bill and his problems with his four star resort, I was intrigued with this novel and it is so worth every penny to buy it. How does he fight aliens surrounding his resort and duck meteors raining down on them?

Wow! Awesome alien invasion thriller! Very realistic characters and good plot. How do you fight aliens that nobody believes are here?!

Under Darkness is a really interesting book. It is a standalone book, which for Scott, was an interesting concept to start with, as he normally writes series, but then when you get into the book itself, you are immediately captivated by a very thrilling story.
Under Darkness follows a set of individuals who are on a holiday resort in Hawaii. One of these is Bill, a guy who has recently been divorced, and was fairly successful in his past life, so not wanting to remain with that life, decides

In my opinion, Jasper Scott has a rip-snorting success in Under Darkness. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, there were so many subplots in this action-packed novel that it literally galloped from the first chapter to the end.

Little did Bill Steel know when he bought a hotel in Hawaii that his dangerously mounting stress levels from sewer problems, a rebellious daughter and belligerent guests would soon be tested beyond anything even he could have imagined. The Koa Kai was about to become

I was lucky enough to read an ARC copy of this book for free but this in no way influences my opinion. I really enjoyed this book, once I started, I found it hard to put down. The characters and plot were substantial and likeable, the story is well written and picks up pace swiftly with engaging twists and turns that made it difficult to stop reading. I enjoyed the fresh take and mix of sci-fi plots which hold the suspense to the final pages. I grew up with the likes of Isaac Asimov and David ...more

I'm up for just about any alien invasion story in the hopes to see a new take on the often-used story, but unfortunately, this one wasn't really new.

The story moves along at a quick, and sometimes unorganized, pace, with plenty of action and killing. The aliens are somewhat interesting although their technology is mostly glossed over. But the biggest problem with this story is that none of the characters are likable. They are all unrealistic and annoying, and at times, you

Being a long time fan of Jasper Scott's work, this was not what I was expecting. In fact, it was different from most Sci-If books I have read. If you need Plasma-Blasters, Laser-Weapons, Particle-Beams, Photon-Torpedoes and other futuristic hi-tech weapons you will be surprised by their absence. How in the world (Oops-Universe) can an Alien Invasion of the earth occur without the Aliens scaring the Crap out of us with their awesome advanced weaponry? I hate to give away Plot Lines or key ...more

Bill Steele was the owner of a modest resort hotel on the island of Kauai and well things were not going so well with the usual issues with running a hotel and keeping the guests happy not to mention a daughter with a strong opinion on how she should live her life. It certainly didn't help his peace of mind when a very unexpected eclipse (well what else could it be?) occurred and mysterious objects slammed into the island. Enveloped in darkness the sights and sounds of the resort take on a life ...more

A clever take on the Alien Invasion storyline. Some parallels with Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing, and Independence Day. Mr. Scott presents, as usual for him, a set of flawed, unlikable characters dealing with extraordinary events. He shows his characters dealing with both BIG world-changing events, and also mundane day-to-day problems. Generally, I liked most of the writing for the many action and adventure scenes. I thought the character development was OK. The book structure was ...more

Oh, I miss Little Green Aliens!

These are possible the most frightening aliens Ive ever read about and Ive read lots! The first were truly awful, enormous with four deadly claws and a hoof that turns into a mouth. Their intelligent masters are even worse with four heads, arms and legs. Worse of all they are almost impossible to kill, it takes a direct shot to the eye or blow apart to destroy them.
They send the first seaders to infect many humans. After they are infected then the masters can

This was Different

And for that, I am thankful.
At first I thought this was going to be done kind of a satire or parody. Ya gotta admit, the tale of a rather hapless innkeeper does have its moments. I worked in the Hawaiian resort industry in my younger days and can attest to the attitudes displayed by the guests depicted here.
It would all be funny if not for the aliens. . . .
Mr. Scott's alien invasion is different from others I have read, though the ultimate goal remains a constant.

Scifi horror

I wasn't quite sure about this book at first but it somewhat grew on me. I didn't love it but didn't hate it. I enjoyed the "invasion of the body snatchers" theme and plot Jasper when with. I do wish he would have developed his side characters a bit more and gave us a more impactful story arc. Additionally, I wasn't quite sure which character was the main character. It started out with one guy being the main character and then switched to another guy, which I wasn't a fan of.

Under Darkness is a fun book, offering us twists on the alien invasion themes, this time in Hawaii and with the added bonus of international intrigue. I enjoyed it. Scott's writing style is good, and the novel is fast paced with a handful of main characters and a few unexpected twists. Best of all, there is no cliffhanger nor any set up for sequels or a series.

Great Sci-Fi Thriller

I've been looking for a good standalone book, one with lots of action and a sci-fi or paranormal them. It is hard. Everyone has Book 1, Book 2, through Book 6 and quite frankly it's getting old. Under Darkness had a great alien invasion theme with a twist and lots of action that had me constantly reaching for my Kindle. The storyline flowed well and I always love a book with multiple POVs, it allows for a more fulfilling story. All of that in one book, imagine that.

A great read

This book caught my eye because it was listed as a standalone, so no need to read 9 books to get closure. It's really well written, with a mix of sci-fi ideas which blend well. The story builds up quickly but solidly, especially the characters. The last 30 per cent of the book does seem a tad rushed ,however that is forgivable as the preceding story builds up so well. It's fun, tragic, intriguing with action and mystery. I do feel there's still more than can be written in this

This was a great read. Alien invasion but without the technically advanced war machines. Instead, creatures are sent down to infect the population with an undetectable virus intended to facilitate control of the human race. Starting small they invade a small island near Hawaii where Bill Steele operates a resort. His 15 year old daughter is full into the melee as they all try to survive the onslaught with one of the other guests (a prepper). A lot of action, some twists in the plot and ...more

Could not put it down, a great read

Wow, this fast paced story is engaging, I read The whole book in one go. From the holiday in hell with poor plumbing to alien invasion that you survive if a suitable specimen or immune. So who is which, who can you trust. The core characters provide interest in interactions as two switch from alien control to normal, creating chaos. The finale is destructive to the world but humans won through

That was a wild ride!

I used to read apocalyptic novels when I was younger but have veered away from them in my old age. They were just too exhausting, depressing, etc.
But somehow I bought this novel and decided to go forward with it.
I thoroughly enjoyed it although it was still exhausting. I read it nonstop and I wasnt disappointed at the end. I was actually sad that this is a stand-alone. On that note I will not say anything more.

Slowly predictable

I finished it, but it was a little painful, I was waiting for the predictable alien invasion and the small group saved the world. It happened, I finished.
I didn't enjoy this like I enjoyed Jasper T Scott's other books I have read, who's characters were more likable and developed more.
The beginning was drawn out and everything happened in latter part of the book.
I was disappointed, but didn't give up on it. A light read.

Faced pace .....good read

Blew thru it. Liked the whole thing. Nicely written alien race. Believable invasion reason. No place to live, gotta come to earth. Similar to the pod people in the old don't sleep or we will get you movie. But with technology. Would have enjoyed their innner struggle on page. Having no control but thoughts and screams.

Superb and incredibly enjoyable story. On a Hawaiian island Bill is trying to get his hotel working when there appears to be an eclipse. But it's an alien space craft and when what appear to be a meteor shower the horror starts. An alien invasion story along the lines of Independence Day which is a complete page turner highly recommended

Not what i expected, but i really enjoyed anyway!

Lots of plot turns and twists, full of action, horror and suspense. I wasnt sure if the story was going to have a happy ending, but it turned out exactly as i didnt expect. I really loved the story and want to read more from the author. If you like sci-fi and horror, this is a good read for you.

Fast paced action thriller

5 out of 5 stars for a fast paced modern action thriller. Good build up on the characters with enough intreage to make you turn the pages. Nice twists in the story keep the pace moving forward with the end coming swiftly to a fast conclusion. Well worth reading, keep up the good work Jasper.

I liked the writers style. The story was easy to follow, and the action kept me turning pages. It was not overloaded with technical goop. That will overwhelm the story and bury the actual plot. Welcome a new twist in the age old alien invades earth plot. Remember the people pods!!!!!

Scott never fails to deliver. This standalone is a great read, everything you expect and more. Action, great charecters, plots and sub plots. This book has more twist and turns than a bobsled ride. I loved every minute of this book! Hope to see many in 19. Great way to end the year.

Very Interesting

I found that once this book got going, and I mean it got going like 0-100 in mere seconds, it took off and never slowed back down until it screeched to its exiting end. If you want something original download NOW!!!

Interesting and fun take on alien invasion. The plot was surprisingly believable, and well thought out. I enjoyed the fact that the story played out over an extended period of time and I liked the characters.
