In this collection of case studies and stories from the field, South African scholars come together to trade stories on how to decolonise the university

Shortly after the giant bronze statue of Cecil John Rhodes came down at the University of Cape Town, student protestors called for the decolonisation of universities. It was a word hardly heard in South Africa’s struggle lexicon and many What exactly is decolonisation? This edited volume brings together the best minds in curriculum theory to address this important question. In the process, several critical questions are Is decolonisation simply a slogan for addressing other pressing concerns on campuses and in society? What is the colonial legacy with respect to curriculum and can it be undone? How is the project of curriculum decolonisation similar to or different from the quest for postcolonial knowledge, indigenous knowledge or a critical theory of knowledge? What does decolonisation mean in a digital age where relationships between knowledge and power are shifting?

The book combines strong conceptual analyses with novel case studies of attempts to ‘do decolonisation’ in settings as diverse as South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania and Mauritius. Such a comparative perspective enables reasonable judgements to be made about the prospects for institutional take-up within the curriculum of century-old universities.

About the author

Professor Jonathan Jansen is the Vice Chancellor of the University of the Free State, South Africa, where he has earned a formidable reputation for transformation and for a deep commitment to reconciliation in communities living with the heritage of apartheid. He is an educationalist, a former Dean of Education at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, who holds an impressive collection of degrees and awards, including the position as President of the South African Institute of Race Relations. He was born in the Western Cape, South Africa, and has lived in various parts of South Africa and in the United States. He is married with two children.

অ্যাকাডেমিক বইয়ের রিভিউ দেওয়ার জন্য গুডরিডস হয়তো খুব জনপ্রিয় জায়গা নয়। মুশকিল হলো, গত কয়েকমাসে এসবের বাইরে অন্যকিছু পড়ার সময়ও খুব বেশি হয়নি। তবে থিসিসের কাজে ব্যবহার করা অনেকগুলো উৎসের ভেতরেও এটির কথা আলাদাভাবে বলতে হয়। সম্ভবত এই বইটিরই সবচেয়ে বেশি অধ্যায় আমি ব্যবহার করেছি। কিন্তু কেবল সেই কারণে নয়, বরং একজন সাধারণ পাঠক হিসেবেই এই বইয়ের রিভিউ লেখা যায়, এমনটা মনে হয়েছে।

জ্ঞান কখনোই নিরপেক্ষ নয়। এটি অবশ্য একটি চর্বিতচর্বণ কথা, নতুন কিছু নেই এতে। কিন্তু প্রশ্ন হলো, কেন নয়? সেই উত্তর আমরা খুঁজি বিভিন্ন উপায়ে। এটি কেবল গবেষণার বিষয়বস্তু নয়, বরং একটি চিরন্তন দার্শনিক সমস্যাও। জ্ঞানের উৎস, উৎপাদন ও প্রচার কারা নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে—সেটি আমাদের অনেক জিজ্ঞাসার জবাব দেয়। সভ্যতার সূচনালগ্নে জ্ঞান যেমন মানুষকে ক্ষমতাবান করেছে, তেমনিভাবে অল্পকিছু মানুষই পরে সেই ক্ষমতাকে কাজে লাগিয়ে জ্ঞানের জগতকে সংকুচিত করেছে। ফলে জ্ঞানের গতিপথ আর সরলরৈখিক থাকেনি। কালক্রমে জ্ঞানই হয়ে উঠেছে আধিপত্যের ঘুঁটি, নিয়ন্ত্রণের চাবি, শ্রেণিবিভক্তির ক্রীড়ানক।

আমরা যখন জ্ঞান বিউপনিবেশায়নের কথা বলি, কিংবা উচ্চশিক্ষার বিউপনিবেশায়নের পরিকল্পনা করি, সেটি তখন আর কেবল একটি গবেষণালব্ধ সিদ্ধান্ত থাকে না। সেটি হয়ে ওঠে একধরনের নৈতিক অবস্থান। বইটির চমৎকার অধ্যায়গুলোতে এই বিষয়গুলোই মূল আলোচ্য। জ্ঞান ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বিউপনিবেশায়ন যাঁদের পছন্দের বিষয়, এই পাঠ তাঁদের আনন্দ দেবে।
