My 4 year old really enjoyed this one, which I enjoyed too in spite of myself, about a little unicorn whose feelings show in the colour of his hair. Does a good job talking through feeling left out by friends, and introducing the idea of breathing/mindfulness. My kid didn't pick up on it or show enthusiasm to try, but I appreciated the linkage. Might check out some others in the series if she ends up having similar big emotions.

Little Unicorn does not want to play the same game as his friends and he pouts. He does breathing exercises to make himself better, but the sadness seemed to stem from self pity. Little Unicorn could have handled his disappointment better in the first place. Bad model in this one for children.

My child loved the entire series of these books. Great for empathizing with what it feels like to be sad (or in other books: scared, shy, etc) and offering a mindfulness practice to pair with the feeling.

E: I liked it when he calmed his body down from his friends. I didn't like it when he got sad.

Parent: Another good one from this series. I liked the example used in the book as I think every child can relate to it. I do think the technique is a little repetitive though.

A sweet little book that does a nice job of teaching children about identifying their emotions and how to cope with sadness using a breathing exercise.

Little Unicorn is sad.

"It feels like [Little Unicorn] has a giant gray cloud in his head. A cloud filled with rain."

Little Unicorn wants to play ball, but his friends want to play tag. They argue, and Little Unicorn's friends leave to play without him. This makes Little Unicorn sad, which causes his magical rainbow mane to turn blue.

Instead of waiting for his sadness to go away on its own, Little Unicorn uses a breathing exercise and visualization to blow away the rain cloud of sadness in his head.

This picture book helps teach emotional awareness, which enables children to identify and express their emotions, introduces the idea of emotional self-regulation, which allows children to manage their emotions and behavior in accordance to the needs of a situation, and demonstrates a coping skill, which helps children master emotional self-regulation.

The story discusses a common feeling and a common experience to which most readers can relate.

It also affords the opportunity for caregivers to discuss emotions with young readers. At the very beginning, when the narrator tells how Little Unicorn is feeling ( Bad! ), she breaks the fourth wall and asks the reader how s/he is feeling today. The choices are framed in a way that small children can intuit: a rainbow, a sun, a sun with a cloud, a grey cloud, a dark gray raining cloud, and a black cloud with lightning.
