My 4 year old, who loves unicorns, was able to relate to the situations that made the unicorn angry. There is a page showing a variety of weather clouds to represent feelings, and my son asked good questions about what sorts of moods they could match to. So that part worked well for him. The breathing part helped reinforce what he's already been taught and the storm cloud being blown away is an excellent visual. This book offers only one (great) way to work through anger, and so I think it is a good starting point for the younger ones, or an excellent choice for working on breathing. My son asked to read the rest of the books in the series, so looking forward to their release.
I wish this was a story instead of a manual for children on what to do if you get angry. Paraphrased: Little Unicorn is like you, he has a lot of feelings. These are called emotions. When Little Unicorn is feeling angry his rainbow mane turns red. He gets angry when he doesn't get his way. When he gets angry, Little Unicorn can chase the feeling away with his breath. You can use a breathing exercise when you get angry too. Here's how you do it...
Sadly, there are more books in this series... Little Unicorn is Scared (green), Little Unicorn is Sad (blue) and Little Unicorn is Shy (purple). I'm guessing these are all written along the same lines.
If this is for you, Little Unicorn is here to help. If not, keep on walking.
While perhaps a bit "sweet" for some, this story about feelings (and anger in particular) is actually well done. The breathing exercises at the end is a good way to help a child to stop, pause and think. And while Little Unicorn wants to throw a tantrum (and there are starts of that) the reward of the breathing shows the more constructive manner. The use of colors to show the different feelings ( is good as well. Part of a series.
Little Unicorn Is Scared (out) Little Unicorn Is Sad (due January 2020) Little Unicorn Is Shy (due January 2020)
This cute picture book helps young readers learn a breathing strategy to deal with anger. Little Unicorn is usually happy, but there are days when nothing seems to go his way. Sudden rainstorms interfere with his outdoor plans, his dad won't carry him to school, his mom makes him take a bath when he'd rather keep playing. The colorful illustrations along with the simple, relatable text make this a nice way for young people to learn that their emotions are normal and there are good strategies for dealing with them.
The minute I saw there were breathing exercises involved, this was on the list. The flashpoint fury of a 5 year old was my focus, but, as we all know, listening to books is often a matter of whimsy - and unicorns are sister's fav, not his. Oh well. We will be ever vigilant and fly the banner of calmness.
The book is cute, has color-coded manes for monitoring and managing emotions. We will check out the others as they come available. The breathing exercise is a good one, too - not so grownup, but not too goofy, either.
I'm kind of torn about this one because I love that it (and the rest of the series) talk about emotions, why you might feel them, what they feel like, etc, but also they're...super wordy. There's always the option to paraphrase or shorten as needed depending on the group, but I wish it had skewed toward a slightly younger audience. A couple of the things I DO like: Pairing the emotions to different colors, that was cute, and the "how do you feel today?" page with different illustrations for various emotions.
Very cute book to help explain emotions to children (identification, expression, dealing with them). However, I do not agree with the color-to-emotion assignments the author used (person opinion). I pretend that three of them are switched around and then I'm happy (PINK not yellow) again.
(For those of you that are curious, I think Happy should be PINK not yellow, Jealous should be GREEN not pink and Scared should be YELLOW not green. IKR! Seems obvious to me too.)
I was interested to see more of these emotions books after I read one of them. It has been a few weeks since I read the last one, but I felt like it was the same exact book. The only difference was the color of the mane and that the word is anger instead of sad... They really should have just combined them all into one.
3.5 stars. I enjoyed the fact that this book names so many levels/degrees of anger. Having a vocabulary for emotions can be so helpful for kids. Includes a breathing exercise to help kids manage anger.
E: I liked know about all the colour he changes into when he's feeling something.
Parent: (would have given it 4 stars) a fun way to talk about feelings. I feel like it could have included more strategies, or that sometimes there's not a reason. But enjoyable and good idea
After reading half of the book to my BF…I found this book to be endearing. However, couldn’t we -between breathing and calmness - also talk about the feelings. This way, the kid can identity each emotion.
I just thinking breathing is just the beginning of an angry fit.
I would be interested in reading more of the books in this series, and I think they might make a good resource for K-2 classrooms. Being able to label your emotions is the first step in being able regulate and cope with them.
There are getting to be more books to assist parents and care givers in talking to kids about emotions and how to deal with them. The inclusion of the breathing exercises is lovely.
