The Lost Sentinel #1

The Lost and the Chosen

Rate this book
My name is Vinna, and I’ve been keeping a lot of secrets.

You would too if you'd experienced some of the weird shit I have: red-eyed monsters chasing me, markings on my body appearing out of nowhere, a strange power that crackles colorfully over my skin from time to time, and don't get me started on the weapons I can conjure up almost out of nowhere.

Lucky for me, I have yet to meet someone whose ass I couldn't kick, inside the ring or out. I put that to the test when I run headfirst into a fight that brings all my secrets, and reality as I know it, crashing down around me.

Now, I'm looking for answers and trying to piece together what the hell is going on. Paranormal is my new way of life. It's not going to be easy, and I'm not exactly welcome.

That is, until I meet the boys, and trust me, they are anything but boyish.
I'm up against elders who think I’m too powerful, a family who views me as a threat, and something lurking in the shadows that's been coming for me my whole life.

There’s not a chance in hell I’m going down without a fight. I’m not lost anymore, and I'm about to show this world exactly what I can do.

Author’s Note: This is the first book in The Lost Sentinel Series and ends with a cliffhanger. This book is a medium burn reverse harem story, intended for ages 18 years and older. This story contains strong language, sexual situations, and violence.

Book two coming in January

Ivy Asher is addicted to chai, swearing, and laughing a lot (but not in a creepy, laughing alone kind of way). She loves the snow, books, and her family of two humans, and three fur-babies. She has worlds and characters just floating around in her head, and she's lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing people who support that kind of crazy.

Ehhhhhhhh.

Let’s talk about this book.

Read some reviews from my RHR fam. Loved them. Love y’all. Super hyped for this book.

Beginning:

My initial thoughts had me all sorts of confused.

We are first introduced to four men.. who I THOUGHT were gonna be the harem.
Ya I know they’re in their 40s but I mean, there are A LOT of hot 40 year olds sooo that wasn’t alarming.
But then.....
One says he’s her uncle and I’m thinking:
SHE’S GONNA BE AN UNCLEFUCKER!!
(I was actually slightly intrigued. So I booked a trip to my therapist)
But turns out Silva (NOT Silvia)’s nephews, AKA the boys, are the harem.

Good to know.

Cancelled my therapist appt immediately. Shit’s expensive.

Why range rovers? Really? Always Range Rovers. Can’t they drive Audi’s? Mercedes? BMW? Fewer letters. Just sayin.
Some of the aspects were close to the Redemption series and I was starting to get concerned.
Because Vinna is not nearly as badass. She’s just not. There, I said it. 😬

Middle:

I’m not gonna lie these dudes laugh A LOT and I have yet to laugh ONCE.

There is no humor.

I think I skipped the part where they introduced the men of the harem properly because I can’t picture any of them. And the personalities are lacking just a bit at the beginning.

Things progress so... weirdly.

I find the entire thing odd.

End:

Thank the moons that tickling described as “delicious torture” is towards the end of the book because HAHAHAHAhahahahahhaditbeenatthebeginningIwouldhaveleft.

Tickling=bloody nose and a knee to the balls in my book.

There was just NO depth to it.
Some of the timing was off, like with Sabin.
Where does Lachlan’s coven come into all of this?
Why are the guys practically faceless to me?
Why do Vinna’s emotions feel so shallow?

I just feel like the execution could have better set these characters up.
But it was so very uninteresting.

Am I ready for book two?
Idk.

There were some seriously lacking action scenes. The whole book ended up being her and the boys getting to know each other. Then some small amount of A&A at the veryyyyy end.

Meh. Just wasn’t for me I guess.

Yes it must be Christmas

I am handing these 5 stars out like Quality Street

This caught me totally by surprise! The feeling of coming across a great RH had me (internally) jumping for joy

If you crossed the Redemption Saga with Gifted Connections, Ariel Kimber and The Veil Diaries then you'd get this book. Weird combo I know but that's the feelings this gave me while reading it.

It started out pretty epic, Vinna has a background of abuse and we find her in a fighting ring. With powers from an unknown heritage she is pretty badass. She quickly meets others with magic like hers and is whisked off to a world of supernaturals to find out who she is. I don't want to spoil too much but I will say it takes a turn after 30% into more of a typical RH, meeting her harem and bringing to trust people again after a life of relying on only herself. Shopping, going to clubs, days away at the lake ... you see where TVD vibes comes in

It's not a smooth ride but the book is a decent length so at least we get some more action along with the relationship building. It's medium burn always a plus and you're left kinda hanging at the end waiting for book 2 ( but not the big cliffhanger I was waiting on from the blurb) thankfully we do get some answers before the end.

Ok so it wasn't perfect. There were things I would change. There was too many names from coven members and some of those names were very similar and therefore hard to remember who was who.
The characters were all over 20 but it reminded me of a high school romance - they lacked a bit of maturity I would expect from someone mid twenties.
I would have liked it all to have continued in the same vein as the first 30% but I enjoyed this so much regardless

I can't see any other books by you Ivy so as your debut novel...you nailed it

No problem recommending this to anyone. It's good a good mix of action and relationships. Vinna is such a great MC and undefeated at kicking ass so I can't wait for more of her.

Please Santa bring me book 2

I liked this one and the main reason was because the heroine was a badass. Though the harem dynamic just seemed out of the blue because I initially thought she was going to be with Lachlan and his crew, they were a lot older and one of them was her uncle, still I could have dug into that :) . Hopefully the boys are given more depth because they seem to laugh a lot at almost nothing. I want them to brood a little. Already have book two locked and loaded.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: it's really hard to write good RHs.

Did this series cut it? Well...

It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good either.

The characters were decent, the plot was ok, the writing was acceptable.

It was all just kind of MEH.

Still, I'll go on with the series, it wasn't bad and I am a teeny, tiny bit curious to see what's next.

I fluffing love romance but I am really starting to understand why some readers would actively avoid it. Romance can ruin even the best characters and I am guessing that balancing strong heroines and fluffy feelings is not something easily achieved.

What works:
+ Vinna before meeting the boys
+ The epic mega awesomeness of her powers. Because who does not want blades coming from their ass?

What does not work:
+ An alpha male wannabe with a girl's name
+ The huge amount of secondary characters
+ Vinna after meeting the boys

You have no idea how disappointed I am. The book started absolutely great. Vinna had the potential to be an incredibly badass character, a younger and less tragic version of Sawyer from A Life Of Shadows , and with probably one of the best powers I've came across so far.
And then boys came into her life and it ruined it for me.

More awesomeness, less flustered virginal flowers!

And now, I am conflicted between walking away or getting my Vinna Power Fix with the next book.
Edit: or not.

Help.
I dont know what is up, but maybe i need to stop reading romances for a while...
I think I'm either in a curmudgeonly mood lately, or I've read to many of these kind of books that my brain is just tired-and everything is overly cheesy to me.

description

I mean so many things were bugging me. Mostly...

I came to learn about magic and what I can do. Instead, I’m trying to untangle myself from useless attraction and mooning over why my uncle doesn’t care about me. I’ve been here for only a couple of weeks, and I feel more confused and lost than I ever have before.

description

The h went from a badass fighter with serious skills, and confidence in herself- to this giggly, confused, horny, teenager (even though she's an adult). I mean all of the leads kind of acted like teenage hornballs after only knowing each other for 5 mins. If she spend less time drooling over them constantly I think I would have had I bit more fun in the beginning.

What the hell is going on? I’m drooling like a teething baby all over these strangers, and I have no idea where that’s coming from. Your vagina, Vinna, it’s coming from your vagina

I’m beyond grateful and a little surprised that I make it through the door without suddenly stopping and trying to lick one of these guys.

I almost lose all my self-control and start rubbing all over him like a needy cat.

I should look away when he adjusts himself, but my raging hormones have apparently fried my brain, so I just gawk.

Great, let’s just add one more temptation to the overfilled plate that is my libido

This is only after a few days. Wheres the romance? The build up?
I think I'd be less annoyed if they were teens....but this insta love/hormone addled/ 'My traitorous body"/mates-romance was kind of annoying.

description

Not to mention that she's constantly getting thrown over a shoulder, or scolded for 'going into danger' despite the fact that she's more capable than any of them, or how she's not like other caster women, or the cutsie nicknames.

Little warrior, little caster, Little Badass, Bruiser, little witch, Squeaks...

description

You get it.

But like I said I stuck with reading this, and eventually the story got a little less trope minefield, and I enjoyed the overall premise.
So if this kind of thing doesn't bother you, and your into reverse harem/ magical world with supernaturals then I'd say give it a try on KU. I can see a lot of people liking this way more than I did!

Six Stars.
This was a gripping, addictive, amazing, entertaining, and overall wow, just wow, book that I read immediately the moment it landed on my kindle, and it took me only a few hours. The reason is just simply because the book would not let me go. I profoundly thank the author for this wonderful story and for not leaving a heart wrenching cliffhanger, which I am sure would have killed me in this instance.
I don't even know where to start, maybe first by thanking my lucky stars for landing another great author and another great story in my library. The story is really great, it is beautifully written and it employs a new fresh approach to paranormal community. The world is masterfully crafted, although I have a feeling that the author has only scratched the surface of what is to come and I am looking forward to anticipated expansions.
The characters could not be better invented and developed, and the author has spent a significant effort on addressing cultural diversities (not necessarily in traditional sense) and gender equality, as well as various socially acceptable norms. Of course I love her for that, and of course she immediately got added to my favourites list. Like that wasn't enouugh to win me over, she created this incredible main character Vinna, who is a lean, mean, undefeated, fighting machine, and at times a killing machine, with an unparalleled attitude, utter lack of any insecurities, fearless, strong, intelligent, and could not care less what people think. And on top of that, Vinna possesses a huge heart, compassion, empathy, and loyalty of the best heroes.
Obviously, since this is a romance and reverse harem, there are some very interesting love interests, and there are diverse and lovely, each in his own way. But most importantly, this book is loaded with all kinds of other characters, some good, some bad, dome in between, some intriguing, but so many of them, it was just amazing. There is a lot of love and support, there is betrayal and hatred, there is greed and quest for power, there is everything, and the story is loaded with action. That's why I couldn't put it down.
The ending answers some of the most pressing questions, however it is vague enough to leave the reader wondering what happens next. Regardless of the lack of apparent cliffhanger, I loved this story so much that I'll be in agony waiting for the next book which is announced for January 2019.

At first, this book confused the heck out of me and I wasn't sure what to think. The guys she meets seem 'off' and the relationships forming there are obviously strained and uncertain. Yet there was something about Vinna that spoke to me and I wanted to know more about her and her strange powers - so I kept reading. Thank goodness I did! Around Chapter 15, the plot explodes and things really kick into high gear. Suddenly everything makes much more sense and the world these characters live in solidifies into a clearer picture. Trust me, read this book.

Pros:

~Very well written.
~Very well edited.
~Character development, at least when it comes to Vinna. Her voice literally speaks through the pages, bleeding into every crevice the plot could possibly create.
~Twists and turns.... there are so many! Nothing is as it seems.
~The story smacks you, then coaxes you to love it.
~The big reveal is brilliantly 'BIG'.

Cons:

~Cliffhanger... painful.
~Some of the twists and turns are tragic... yet tragically needed.
~The guys are very important, but then again... they often are not in terms of plot.

I dnf-ed this years ago, but then read another book by this author (that I enjoyed) so I decided to give this one another try. And it was fun! It was captivating enough and the MC was pretty badass. I’ve already forgotten 90% of what happened, but I enjoyed it at the time 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I was really looking forward to this one too 😭

Genre wise this is a paranormal slow-burn reverse-harem romance and It was an easy read that I definitely found enjoyable. A deadbeat abusive mother and a crappy past were vinna’s lot in life used to taking care of herself meeting Talon as a teenager changed everything for her he took her in hand taught her to fight and utilise her natural talents and became almost a surrogate father.

She’s always known she was different the appearance of magical runes and certain abilities only confirmed this. But what Vinna wasn’t anticipating was meeting others of her kind, family she had no idea existed but this newly discovered family doesn't seem too excited by her unexpected appearance in their lives.

Vinna’s life is now suddenly turned upside down by this discovery, add in an intensely powerful attraction towards a coven of five hot castors, some unexpected revelations regarding her own obscure origins, surprising reveals and hidden agendas and this then certainly had a lot going on.

Our heroine here Vinna was the absolute bomb. A real tough cookie I loved how self-reliant she was her ability to take care of herself was refreshing and this was then combined with just the correct dose of softness and vulnerability to appeal.

I did like all of Vinna’s men, I must admit though when I initially realised they were meant to be twenty-six to Vinna’s twenty-two I was a bit surprised as going by their boyish antics here they did appear to me to be much younger I’d say closer too early twenties. I also should say that I initially thought the first older lot were going to be her harem yes even when one was revealed to be the uncle I was like mmm intriguing, so I was slightly bummed initially to discover we’d been downgraded to the boys.

Despite that, I did enjoy all of the back-and-forth banter and roughhousing this lot indulged in and they did have chemistry together. Just sometimes they were too a bit too nice and agreeable and i much preferred the very first glimpse of the twins we got when they were all broody attitude instead of what they later evolved into when they realised just who Vinna was.

This first book intrigued me and did manage to capture and retain my interest I’m definitely planning on jumping into book two now i can’t wait to discover just what's in store next for Vinna, Sabin, Knox Ryker, Valen and Bastien. This was Well written and imaginative and I did appreciate the whole paladin caster angle this had going on a good start to an intriguing new series.

What really threw me off that most was the fact that nobody acts how they should in this book. The 40 year old uncles act like teenagers. Vinna is supposed to be this bad ass loner but she just turns into a whiny, moody teen (she’s like 23). Then her and the guys act like they’re childhood best friends not even a day after meeting. This doesn’t just happen with the guys either, Vinna meets a girl in town and then a second later they are chatting like besties. Also why do authors try to force humour by making the character burst out laughing? It wasn’t that funny and it just makes me cringe.

The guys were also hard to tell apart. They were all just in a silly goofy mood the whole book. With WC books the love interests can easily fall into the stereotypical characters but I’d prefer that than a copy and paste.

The beginning was interesting. Then it was like a completely different book about 100 pages in. The theme and overall vibe went from a dark and mysterious woman who fights in rings to this light YA feel about a group of what I think acted more like teens messing around splashing in the water (literally, they were splashing in water). I just know these types of books aren’t for me and if I know what it was going to be like going in, I wouldn’t have picked it up.

This is a tad spoilery. Read at your own risk.

I liked this one, but I didn’t love it. I found that the story, the harem, and the runes (badass) were all interesting. They are the reasons I continued to read. Even the Talon, the 3 ladies in the house, and her new friend were interesting, but something about the MC didn’t work for me. She kind of annoyed me. She’s a bit of a special snowflake. Yes, you’re a badass, yes you’re super powerful, yes you get the hottest, most talented men, yes you’re even more magical than most magical beings. You’re super de duper magical. And a badass. And gorgeous. And you’re a virgin and don’t drink. Of course you are! But you’re still sexual. No nervousness. Ever. Cause you’re a badass. Sigh. She’s perfect. Lucky.

Allllllll that said, I may still check out the next one to find her Achilles heel.

I had this on downloaded for a few months before I actually decided to read it. I kept putting it off thinking other books sounded better. I regret not reading it sooner, but also now that I am reading the next book, I am already dreading the wait for the 4th...lol.

This book was a breath of fresh air. Vinna is an amazing MC. She isn't weak, she knows her mind, and she isn't afraid to push herself.

Her guys are wonderful and supportive. The only thing I find missing is that I wish there were more time spent getting to know them separately with more extensive descriptions. While I feel like they are all different enough that they don't just blend together, I think the twins sort if don't get the same air time as the rest to show how they are each unique rather than a matching set of hotness.

Love the world created and the characters.

Holy fuck. That ending was sad as shit.
Excuse me while I clean my damn face so I can see the screen.

This was a fantastic start.
Vinna is my absolute Favorite type of FMC. Simply put. She’s a badass.
She knows how to fight and she’s not afraid to use that knowledge to put you on your ass.
But she’s also super playful and able to just be and laugh.

It’s really fun to watch her interact with the guys and her and Aydin are sort of hilarious together.

I’m just really glad I picked this up.
I’m really freaking hoping that the rest of the books measure up because this was a really wonderful start.

Characters: Vinna, Ryker, Knox, Valen, Bastien, Sabin

Story: This was a great beginning of what I feel like could be one of my favorite Reverse Harem series. I enjoyed the main character Vinna. She's strong and has a backbone and doesn't take any crap from anyone. She also has a vulnerable side which I felt for when it came out. I loved how her guys were so supportive of her even when she tried to push them away. I hated that her uncle and the rest of his group continued to hurt her throughout the story. I really can't wait to see where this story goes. This was an amazing book.

Narration: Mia Madison - I absolutely loved her narration. I think she will be a new favorite narrator of mine.

4.5.

I just wrote out a long review, but the app is a pile of crap and deleted it all. So... This book is fucking awesome. Like seriously good. It's like the writer has taken some of my favourite aspects from some great RH series' and melded them together.

There's the badassness of Sawyer from The Redemption Saga (albeit a slightly younger and more innocent version) combined it with the group dynamic and sweetness of The Veil Diaries (but they're all in their 20's, so hello heat level!) and it works really well.

My only gripe is that for a bunch a people in their 20's, Vinna and the guys sometimes came across as a much younger at times came across that way sometimes, which was actually one of its strengths.

In summary, this is a brilliant book that I highly recommend!

I'm not sure where to start but wow what a mess for a young bad-ass female. Vinna didn't have a good start to her life but Talon was her savior of sorts but there are things that Vinna has and doesn't understand until she comes across a fight where she was trying to be helpful but adds to more questions she needs answers for. It also becomes something she may get her answers.
This was well written and I do can't wait to read the next book. I need to know what's next! LOL

3.5 stars. It's hard to review this book.

Polyandry sounds exhausting and I cannot keep all the "boys" straight. Nor the Paladins.

The ending wraps up kinda neatly. There might be more but did I enjoy this enough to continue reading the series? Not sure.

She's pretty much all powerful. She can fight like a badass, she can heal, she can get 5 mates at once, and on and on. Sure, her uncle is a little bit of a douchebag and she had a rough childhood, but otherwise, she makes friends really easily and defeats enemies with no issue.

She is able to style her hair with magic and describes her own lips as wasp-stung. Enh.

It's not bad but it's not fabulous.

The narrator was pretty good.

⭐️Brief Summary:
Book 1 of a series of 4.

-Vinna is alone in the world, her mother and sister passed when she was 18yrs old. But she was on her own at 15yr when she met a man that took her in and taught her how to fight and gave her a place to live.

-For years she fought as a way yo make money and gain strength. On her 16th Birthday she woke up with Ruins that’s tattooed all over her body and with time a her training she learned how to se them.

-So she doesn’t know exactly what she is but she knows supernaturals exist. One night after a fight she comes across a fight between witches and shifters and she gets involved. This leads to her being taken to Solace a community in Main that’s warded so no one knows it’s there. Shifters and witches and the main supernaturals that live there. Here they want to teach her about being a Caster Witch…. Which is what she is.

🌟 Overall Opinion:

-I like how strong and badass Vinna is. The storyline is intriguing. There’s a lot of mystery around her magic and Ruin marks.

-Her harem 💕 is super sweet and so far I like each of them although there isn’t a lot of time on them and they could use more depth. I love love love the no OW drama. Not even a mention of OW. 💕

-Her Uncle is a prick! And I don’t get why the rest of them think she is a threat. Like get to know a girl first yeah.

-So I found this REALLY slow moving with lots of weird jumps in timelines.
The amount of showers and eating in this is beyond a lot. Like ALOT! And I found it repetitive. Like I was reading the same scene over and over. There was a lot of eating, showering, throwing her over the shoulder, and laughing tons of laughing that I just didn’t get… like why? I don’t think I laughed once.

-There is a absurd amount of side characters! Like way to many to keep track. And each time a character is introduced there’s a full description of them… like for one time character intros to people who don’t even talk! But also I found it took aways from her harem and the time that could have been spent getting to know them. To many characters to make any real deep connection to any of them.

-The amount of giggles (from the men to), laughs and winks is Absolutely OVER USED. What man giggles!? Seriously. Giggles from 26yr old men!

-So all these characters are supposed to be 22-26 ish but the act like 13yr olds! No even exaggerating. It was weird. I kept chanting in my head … they are adults.. they are adults.

-⚡️Despite all the listed above I did enjoy it especially towards the end where the story was starting to pick up alot more. This has so much potential and I hope it builds more.⚡️

-I really hope for more from her harem and more in-depth relationships and growth in the next one 🙏🏻.

🤔 Closing Summery:
Still uncertain if I love this or not. At times the story intrigues me and other times I was bored. The authors writing style kept throwing me off. There was just something keeping me from getting to invested. But I do want to see where this goes and if it gets better.

This book didn’t make me work hard for the story and I loved every minute of it. It was very easy to be sacked in. My only problem, why I removed the .5, is that I still could not tell the guys apart. Throughout the book, they sounded like one person except for Sabin. At least by the end, I could remember what makes Knox Knox. Which really sucks because that left only 3, two of which are twins. Shows how meh the characters are such that I couldn’t distinguish between what is essentially 2 people.

But I loved the story and I can’t wait to get to book 2.
