I'd rate this four and a half stars if I could.

Martin Williams was the first jazz critic to strongly affect my taste and thinking about the music. (Has he really been dead for over 20 years now?) A Christmas gift of the paperback edition of his The Jazz Tradition was eye-opening for me in my late teens. His paragraph on Charlie Parker's "Embraceable You" solo from that book is among my favorite explications of a piece of music, and changed the way I heard that recording.

This book basically collected essays. Some were highly of interest: in the studio with Jimmy Giuffe, Jim, Hall & Art Farmer, etc. Other essays were often a bit intellectual or of musicians I wasn't as interested in. Williams is a great writer, though, so I'm glad I made it through and reccommend it to anyone who sees topics of interest in the TOC.
