Agents of Rivelt #1-11

Agents of Rivelt - A Novel in Short Stories

Rate this book
An escaped, telepathic slave. A bounty hunter with a secret. How will they evade death long enough to free other thought-readers?

Slave traders are abducting thought-readers from their haven world, then selling them on Syndicate space stations. There, telepaths have two choices: Steal secrets for their owners or face execution for the crime of existing.

Every mission to infiltrate the space stations is a close encounter with death. To Tracy, a former slave turned undercover agent, and Vigard, her bounty-hunter partner, freedom is a cause worth fighting for. Even dying for.

This epic battle against entrenched slavery is now available in a novelized version, which includes all eleven previously published short stories.

If you like rich characters, telepathy, and intrigue, set against a tapestry of alien cultures, then you’ll love Agents of Rivelt.

Way more than I expected. As in, more people. Of course, I knew I was not the only Sharon Rose in the world, but it turns out that some of them are authors, too. I’m the Sharon Rose who writes science fiction and fantasy for those who prefer a cleaner read.

I've always struggled with reviewing my own book. That's why I waited almost two years to enter this review. I have just finished reading Agents of Rivelt from a reader's perspective, and I have to say--I love this story. I won't pretend that I'm not biased, but I no longer remembered every angle and I truly enjoyed rediscovering them. (Especially, the last two stories!)

Since you're reading the author's perspective, I'll share a little insider info. (No spoilers though.)
This series has the overarching plot of a novel, but it was written as short stories, which I published as I finished them. They span two years of Tracy's and Vigard's lives and were written over about eighteen months.

Novels never come out exactly as the author first envisioned. The ending, or the route to it, changes during writing, but we can always edit earlier scenes to make the whole thing fit together. Not so when those earlier scenes have already been published! That meant I could only work with what had already happened. That made the writing experience much more like real life. We can never go back and change an earlier event or decision. We can only move forward from where we are today. In a way that is obvious, but it is also a reminder (I wasn't expecting) to always set regrets aside and focus on moving forward.

Though this book is a compilation of short stories, it feels cohesive and whole. I thoroughly enjoyed the sci-fi, planetary feel to the story. Nothing felt out of place, just natural and believable. Love the way Tracy and Vigard’s relationship developed over time; how they grew as individuals and as partners.

This is a quick read and entertaining read. I kept turning pages and was at the end far too quickly.

All eleven short stories in the Agents of Rivelt series are collected together for the first time.

If you have already read this exciting series, then there's no need to worry all the stories are the same as before.

But if you are just getting started, I recommend getting this collection. No need to hunt down eleven stories and remember what order they go in. Besides once you start reading about Vigard and Tracy's adventures you are going to want to read them all in quick succession.

**** SPOILER ALERT ****
"Agents of Rivelt: A Novel In Short Stories" harks back to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "A Study In Scarlet", but more cohesively.
Rose delivers a well crafted, action packed story arc that also balances exposition. The author does a masterful job of world building and creates richly drawn characters as they introduce us to the universe of "Rivelt" where the slave trade in young thought readers is allowed to fester on Syndicate controlled space stations.
We follow Tracy, a former slave herself, and Vigard, her bounty hunter partner as they participate in dangerous missions to free slaves.
I highly recommend this thought provoking story.
Q: Can Tracy make a major impact on the slave trade?
Q: Can the team figure out who in the Riveltian government is part of the slave trade?
Q: Can the Syndicate's be convinced to assist in abolishing the slave trade?
Q: Will Tracy and Vigard finally realize their true feelings towards each other?
A: Grab this book and find out Rose's answers to all those questions and more!
In the interest of transparency: I was given a free review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review.
It is my own honest opinion.

Agents of Rivelt, a delightful and captivating sci-fi read, is a novel in short story form by author Sharon Rose. Set in the far future where Syndicate space stations are the hubs of spacefaring commerce, a series of stories unfold where the plot is to rescue thought-reading Human slaves and return him or her to their rightful family. All without the agents—or the former slave—getting themselves killed. Or worse.

Tracy is such a slave. Though well taken care of, fed, and clothed, her master requires her to listen in to leaked thoughts from other people and to tell him of these ideas in order for him to devise methods of questionable means to relieve money from these loose thinkers. The Syndicate seeks to capture and kill Humans like Tracy—to protect their own ways and means—that adds a personal “thrill” to Tracy’s life.

Vigard, a transport captain peddling merchandise across the systems, is an undercover slave rescuer; or, private locater for hire. He recovers Tracy from her credit fleecing master and returns her to family on Rivelt—at considerable cost to him, for he eventually falls for the lovely Tracy and complicates his life’s work.

Agents of Rivelt is a masterful and thought provoking read. Family friendly and clean. Highly recommended.

Both our hero and heroine can read thoughts, which is a crime to some and a curse to others. They are on a mission to free others like them, but are they willing to risk getting caught themselves?

This is actually a collection of short stories which were previously published, but they have been collected together here. In spite of this, the stories actually fit together very well as a full length story. The story is well written, easy to read and quite fun with a nice dose of action as well as some thought provoking elements as well, just like I would expect from a good SF story. The characters are also well done and work together well as a team. Overall, this was an excellent read and I look forward to exploring more by this author.

Highly recommended.

I received an ARC from Hidden Gems for review purposes.

The connection between Vigard and Tracy kept me hooked in this novel! The first half was a little slow but it started building up when Daemon got in the picture. I really enjoyed the different worlds and reading about the different kinds of people like tralt, humans, syndicate, thought readers... all of the sort! Each mission was different in their own way but in each mission these characters grew in knowledge and grew together as well that made this a perfect duo to follow along with. A great read to add to my science fiction collection!

Kena is the only human navigator on a space ship full of alien races. She is not a native telepath. All of the aliens are. The development of her relationships with the folks on her ship is a delight to experience. She has a big heart. Humans are physically faster than the aliens because of adrenaline. Nice. No other race can sing! The Christian emphasis is awesome without being preachy. No cursing, No sex. Can't recommend it enough.

Excellent!

It's as if you're reading a TV series. Each story flows into the next with an overarcing plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. In a universe reminesent of Timothy Zahn's Night Train to Rigel universe, human locators rescue slaves. I loved every moment of it.

I am spectacularly pleased by this novel!
~ despite (or perhaps because of) it being a collection of short stories, the stories and timelines progress at a good pace
~ there are no profanities, gratuitous violence or explicit scenes, but still a good dose of action, intrigue and emotion - especially towards the end of the collection
~ bearing in mind (trigger-warnings) that slaves and trafficking is the central topic of this book so there are references to torture employed in the slaving process
~ although all out sci-fi and intergalactic based, the descriptions are well done and the various species humanoid enough that it does not feel out of place

I would say anyone from the age of 12 onwards should really read the whole collection as it puts such beautiful emphasis on trust and communication across cultures

Sharon Rose has done an excellent job of creating alien races that are easily seen in one's mind. Each mission the agents went on to rescue a fellow telepath that had been kidnapped kept my interest. I was sad to come to the end of the series. I wanted to know what was instore for the agents next phase in life.

This started out a little slow, as the great authors paint the background picture of the story. However, it quickly gains speed and turned into a very good story, or at least the beginning of one. It definitely left you with wanting more and wanting to see what happens to the characters. I would recommend this to anyone.
