This concise interpretation of the apostle Paul's first letter to Timothy keeps technical matters to a minuimum, while making every effort to provide a clear explanation of each portion of the epistle. Dr. Hiebert's verse-by-verse method keeps the trend of thought before the reader by means of a well-developed outline.
The letter to Timothy was intended to give him needed help in opposing the false teachings that were creeping into the church. Hiebert's valuable commentary makes the truths Paul taught Timothy clear and easily applicable to the layman and busy pastor.
Of the five or so commentaries that I’ve used while preaching First Timothy, Hiebert’s has become my favorite. More accessible and succinct than Calvin, less technical than Mounce, and less verbose than Fairbairn, D. Edmond Hiebert knows how to get to the point and clearly explain the text.
One excellent quality about this commentary is how well Hiebert grasps the intent of Paul’s transitions from one subject to the next. It’s clear that Hiebert understands the author’s intent in writing to Timothy.
If I had to keep one commentary on First Timothy, I think this would be it w/ Patrick Fairbairn as a close second.
Hiebert is concise, packing so much information into a wonderful economy of words. I do not agree with all of his positions, but he always makes me think and interact with the Biblical text.
At only 113 pages, the reader will find this commentary a very thorough aid in understanding the New Testament book of First Timothy. As a part of the Everyman's Bible Commentary series (of which I have read many), it is written from a theologically conservative point of view and is published by Moody Press. The one bone I would pick is that, while the back cover states "This Everyman's Bible Commentary is based upon the scriptural text as found in the King James Version", the author states on page 7, "The text quoted is that of the American Standard Version (1901)...". Hence Mr. Hiebert tends to "correct" the KJV a bit more than I thought really necessary. This aside, I would recommend it to any Bible student seeking a clearer grasp of Holy Scripture.
