Mooncalves follows the bloody implosion of a cult in Sainte-Ptronille, Quebec, understood through the urgent voices of the living and a ring of ghostly, shape-shifting watchers. Sensing the impending dissolution of society by technological progress, the charismatic, utterly unhinged Joseph Reiser forms "Walden," a collective of Luddite devotees--most still in their teens. A vicious ...more

I finished Mooncalves by Victoria Hetherington a couple of weeks ago, but I haven’t quite known how to review/respond to it. First, I LOVE Hetherington’s writing style. It is lyrical, poetic, wonderful to read. Snatches of sentences are so beautiful that they call to be read over and over again. However, the story, centered in part around a cult in Quebec, Canada, was confusing at times. Girls/women become a “family” of a crazed man named Joseph, who fears that technology will bring the end to the world. ...more

Highly recommended. But if you do read it, don’t make the same mistake I did. I wasn’t expecting a debut novel to be so skillfully written. I wasn’t expecting to be so challenged by the language and the presentation of ideas. I wasn’t expecting Hetherington to cast a spell on me. Consequently, I did not surrender completely to the storytelling at first. I was a quarter into the book when I realized that the book and its author were special. And I knew I would have to read it again and pay closer ...more

In her riveting, lyrical novel Mooncalves, Victoria Hetherington brings to life inspired characters Erica, Logan, Shelagh, and young Abby. Under the spell of Joseph, a man whose needs are only met when he can control his “Family,” Erica gives herself to the power of his sexual appetites and his grooming at the tender age of 14. We witness her growth, from adolescent to woman, though her body remains small like a child. Hetherington breaks the traditional narrative structure to tell the story fro ...more

Reading this book is comparable to a first time read of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaids’ Tale”. The slow tick of what is deemed regular life is juxtaposed between flashbacks of the past and how the characters in the future found themselves now. It’s a believable, slow process you can’t tear your eyes from and makes you want to weep all at once.

2 stars for most of the book, just wasn’t up my street. But that ending!!! As a side, possibly not appropriate to read on the tube for danger of people reading over your shoulder...
