It is the summer of 1961, and eleven-year-old Arno Creelman wants nothing more than to be an astronomer. Fortunately, his struggle with claustrophobia has little impact on his one true passion. Unlike his annoying friend Buddy, who wants to become an astronaut and is not at all bothered by the idea of flying in a cramped space capsule, Arno dreams of exploring the galaxies ...more

This was a quite a short story with cute illustrations about a boy defeating his fear in order to reach for his dream. Arno wants to become an astronomer, but he has claustrophobia. He's terrified to even enter the observatory building lest the machinery falls and kills everyone. But he has a unique chance to meet a personal hero of his and see the opening of a new observatory, so with the help of his friend, he learns to stand up to his fear.

This story was enjoyable, despite having quite a bit

Arno and his friend and neighbor, Buddy, are obsessed with different aspects of the space program in the summer of 1961. Buddy thinks he can train to be an astronaut, but Arno is more interested in study facts about stars and planets and wants to become an astronomer. There is a new neighbor who moves in, Robert, who is more into astrology, which Arno holds in disregard. Arno is very interested in a newspaper writer who publishes a column that covers his interests, and h

Light, fascinating, imaginative and informative. Although the story only takes place within 24hrs of the first sentence, you at once love this child named Arno. He is incredibly smart, socially awkward and has a crushing fear that may derail his dreams/goals. He is every one of us, and he is our champion.
For any child slightly interested in the stars, for any adult that needs a light read and a kick of child-like curiousity, I would totally suggest this book.

A quick middle-grade read focusing on eleven year old Arno Creelman who wants nothing more than to be an astronomer.

Filled to the brim with fun facts about our solar system and space exploration in the 1960’s (the setting for the novel), this brief book would be a great choice for struggling readers and/or for those whom love all things Science and Space. In fact, this would be a great cross curricular read aloud for the Ontario Gr. 6 Science unit on Space. However those hoping for a story of ad
