“What’s that bird?” asks a child. “What’s it doing? Why are its feathers so colourful? Can we feed it? Where does it nest?” You would love to encourage the child in their interest … but you are not a birdwatcher, so how can you? Or an older child wants to learn birdsong, or study owls – but you are lost for ideas.

This is where “Encourage A Child To Watch Birds” comes in. I

As part of his “Encourage a Child” series of books, Walton’s guide serves as a means to get kids off their screens by offering them an engaging alternative. It’s a great resource that gives parents the information they’ll need to start bird watching with their children, an activity that teaches children and parents alike about nature, all while enhancing observational and descriptive skills.

Following an introduction on how beneficial bird watching can be for kids, Walton offers guidance on sever

This little gem of a book is designed to help adults encourage children to get away from their computer screens and outside to watch birds. The book gives some good, basic facts about the birds you and your child might see and provides questions you can ask to encourage the child to watch the birds and talk about what they've seen. I know a bit about birds and still learned new facts, but this book makes it easy to start even if you know nothing at all about birds. The activities and discussion ...more

In today’s world the natural environment competes with digital elements of our lives. We seem increasingly time poor as screens easily win the battle for our attention. It would be a bleak and empty future if the wonder of nature and animals is lost to the latest generation.

In an attempt to combat this possibility, Denzil Walton has written a book to share his knowledge and experience of bird watching with children. Encourage a Child to Watch Birds is written for adults caring for children and g

This is a short, well-organized, and clearly written book intended for adults with a child or children in their lives. Its main intent is to help them develop an interest in observing and learning about birds in the natural environment. The introduction specifies that the suggested activities are screen-free, and this is true, although internet resources are mentioned peripherally. Otherwise, each chapter takes the child and adult companion outside to experience birds in a variety of ways.

Encourage a Child to Watch Birds - Denzil Walton

I have followed the author’s blog “Discovering Belgium” for a couple of years and was curious about this e-book he wrote. All I wish is that he would have written this much earlier, namely during the years I was still teaching in Belgium. I would have loved to put all his tips, projects, and suggestions in use with my sixth graders. “Encourage a Child to Watch Birds” is a book for adults to introduce children to bird life. Its layout is straightfor

I didn’t think I would enjoy this book, but I was wrong. I’m not a personal fan of feathered creatures, but this book opened the door a little and I shall watch birds more carefully from now on, it has sparked my interest. I had no idea there were so many activities connected with watching any creature, and as a teacher in my early life I thought I knew it all.
This book is well written, and follows each process step by step, leading in ten easy stages from the simple to the more advanced and ju

Encourage a Child to Watch Birds is a first class introduction to bird watching for children, parents and grandchildren alike. I wish, when I went to school, my teachers had provided so much detail with so much imagination. The author takes a quiet non-screen topic and makes it magical. The ideas are wonderful and the questions for children stimulating. Now I need to spend some serious time looking out my window. I know my next walk in the park will be special (you are never too old to be a chil ...more
