The Silver Bullet

Rate this book
“To think of death as a thing of beauty: that’s a threshold you can’t cross twice.”

The truth is out, and Emmy is faced with a choice she dreads: surrender her mortality, or allow her frailty to threaten the nascent society the Silver are building. With exile the only reasonable alternative, she struggles with feelings she can’t define and a duty she’s reluctant to accept.

While the Silver city hangs in the balance, Emmy must remake herself to redeem it and save her friends. Her reinvention forces her to choose sides, threaten alliances and risk becoming like those she fears: inhuman.

The Silver Bullet is the final book in Josie Jaffrey's Solis Invicti paranormal romance quadrilogy, set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic London where a deadly infection threatens to wipe out humanity. The only people who can stem its advance are the Silver, a vampiric race who offer a simple exchange: protection in return for blood and subservience.

Josie Jaffrey

Josie is a dark fantasy, paranormal romance and historical fiction author who writes about lost worlds, dystopian societies and morally-ambiguous monsters (vampires are her favourite). She has published multiple novels and short stories. Most of those are set in the Silverse, an apocalyptic world filled with vampires and zombies.

Josie is the founding editor of indie fantasy magazine Indie Bites (www.silversunbooks.com) and the writer of the urban fantasy podcast Jack Valentine, Vampire Detective (www.jackvalentinepod.com).

She’s currently working on vampire murder mysteries (the Seekers series) and a YA series centred around Atlantis and the lost civilisations of the Mediterranean (the Deluge series). Researching the latter is the first time she’s used her Classics degree since university.

Josie lives in Oxford with her husband and two cats (Sparky and Gussie), who graciously permit human cohabitation in return for regular feeding and cuddles. The resulting cat fluff makes it difficult for Josie to wear black, which is largely why she gave up being a goth. Although the cats are definitely worth it, she still misses her old wardrobe.

Emmy is caught up in a fight for her life, literally. She has no desire to give up her mortality and only deception may save her as the fragile balance of peace in London is threatened and the protection of the Silver is in doubt. One powerful vampiric enemy sets his sights on a total takeover and annihilation of the reigning king and his followers and taking out Emmy would be like icing on his bloody cake.

The Weepers’ number are growing and their deadly threat is everywhere. With a vampiric war in the offing, Emmy must rely on Sol’s feelings for her to keep her alive. Can the king afford to risk his own life and the trust of his subjects to save her knowing she doesn’t’ return his feelings? What of Ollie, a human she has grown close to?

She can only hide for so long, only depend on the Silver as long as they follow Sol. Confused emotionally, determined to stay a mortal, Emmy’s heart and her connection to Sol could be her greatest downfall, but is it? Could there be an even greater threat lurking in plain sight? The Weepers are coming, breaking down barriers, flooding the land with their disease and they are getting close, very close. A vaccine against their deadly bite has not been tested, leaving Emmy vulnerable from yet another quarter. Has time run out for Emmy, the Silver and humanity? Ben and his vampiric minions are on the march and saving London could save the world, but where does that leave Emmy?

Absolutely riveting! Josie Jaffrey has nailed the final book in the Solis Invicti Series as she plunges us headlong into a world of chaos where all the rules of life have changed and one woman will do whatever is necessary to save her humanity and her soul. THE SILVER BULLET rages across the pages in all of its dark glory as vampires fight vampires, blood runs freely and humans become the feeding round for both vamps and zombies alike. This is NOT a quiet read. This is edge of your seat turmoil at its best as Josie Jaffrey brings her world to life once again. Emmy has grown, her heart has been twisted in knots and her life has become a chess piece on a dark and bloody board.
As the last page came barreling into the station, I felt I had run every step with these characters, gotten to know the as more than written words and found an author I want more from!

I received an ARC edition from Josie Jaffrey in exchange for my honest and voluntary review!

I’ve positively adored the Solis Invicti series, and had high hopes for this final book. I expected a lot of action, with everything coming together in a wonderful way. What I did not expect was the final book in the series to be twist and turns galore. I was of the belief I could not be surprised again, but Josie Jaffrey managed to surprise me once more.

If you have yet to read the prior books in the series, go back and do so now. The Silver Bullet is a wonderful read, but to understand it you need to be up to date with the series. I assure you, every book in this series is wonderful. It’s an addictive series, with so many layers, and you will not regret diving into it.

With the series having so many layers, I went into this one expecting a great conclusion. As I’ve already mentioned, this book does more than just bring things together well. It is a fabulous conclusion to a fabulous series, and a fabulous book within its own rights. From the very start, you’re sucked in, and the book does not let go until you reach the end.

There is plenty of action, plenty of drama, countless twists, and so many goodies you will find yourself unable to put the book down. It hooks you on so many levels, and as soon as you’re finished you’ll find yourself ready to dive into the Sovereign series, because you’re not quite ready to say goodbye to the world you’ve been drawn into.

Josie Jaffrey is a powerful storyteller, and this conclusion to the Solis Invicti series beautifully demonstrates her capabilities.

At the risk of repeating myself, I need to preface this review by advising you that this is not a standalone novel.  You absolutely need to have read the first three book in the series before starting this one.

OK.  The review.

I think that this is a series which is an undiscovered gem.  I really do.  I have devoured each installment greedily, and this, the final book in the quadrilogy, was no different.

I confess that I was intrigued to see how Emmy was going to survive.  The solution was well executed, and launches the reader directly into the action from the opening page.

As befits the concluding chapter, this is the best in the series.  Emmy's vacillations were fewer and the drama once again cranked up. The ever present threat from the weepers is, in some ways, background noise for much of this story, as the narrative steers the reader towards the conclusion through a gamut of experiences.  And it seems that help can be found in the unlikeliest of places.

Reading this series has been a real treat.  I'm so pleased that the climax played out in the way it did.  It didn't feel like a cop out and if I'm honest, I'm a little sad that there is no more to come.

Just entrancing.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

Ms. Jaffrey has done it again! The Silver Bullet is full of action, betrayal, and just the right amount of steamy.

The action picks up right where Bound in Silver left off. It doesn’t let up from there. In all actuality if life hadn’t have gotten in the way I probably could have finished it in a day. I didn’t want to put it down! There are a few slower parts but they blend in well and never last long.

I do not want to give too much away, so all I will say on the betrayal front is this: I never saw it coming! Jaffery has a way of making me want to throw her books across the room (trust me this is a good thing). I was so surprised and hurt right along with Emmy that it felt like a personal betrayal. On a side note, I think I may be safer getting these books in paperback before re-reading them all. 😉

I love the love between Sol and Emmy! He truly loves her and wants her to choose even if it means losing her. It is refreshing from the “I’m gonna make you mine” attitude in many romance novels. True to life Emmy realizes that she has loved Sol all along. The tid bit where Drew pinned Emmy while training her felt true to life as well. It would be slightly awkward given their history.

The ending holds possibilities for more to the series or even the potential for spin off series. Either way it was an explosive ending to an amazing series!

I will shout my love for this series from the rooftops! I give this book 5 cures!

This was not my favourite book of the Solis Invicti saga but, like all the previous books, it's a really addictive reading. The main character Emmy was starting to "annoy me" because she just couldn't take the obvious choice in front of her and was more self centered than before. However, I really enjoyed the partnership between her and Laila and I was really surprised (in a positive way) when Ollie revealed himself a traitor. There is a part of me that wished he had the opportunity to redeem himself at the ending (I suppose Emmy would too) but it's understandable that that didn't happened because it's just more real the way it happened and there is always the doubt about his intentions when he sees Emmy at his very ending. I really wish we could know more about the world after the Weepers so I do hope that the author writes another book in this new world, I feel that more could still be explored! By the way I was Team Sol from the first moment he appeared!

Title: The Silver Bullet
Author: Josie Jaffrey
Genre: Adult, Dystopian, Paranormal
Format: Ebook
Pages: 317
Rating: 5
Heat: 3

Thoughts: *Cries* I hate series endings, it’s like losing friends. But it was so worth the read! It’s one of those series that you want to keep close by so you can reread it, or just see it and be reminded of the awesome adventure it was. The story just sticks with you in a way that no matter how long it’s been since you’ve visited you still remember. The problem many of us readers face when we vividly remember the story and know we loved it but forget the title, yet know what color the cover was lol. This last book was so intense (like camping) it was hard to believe that there could ever be an HEA. So when it happens you can’t help but cry out with relief and joy. I had a MAJOR book hang-over after this one, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Seriously, this is a definite must read!

Predictable

This series ending was what I expected. Emmy continued to get on my nerves. She never accepted Ollie possibly being so entrenched in his beliefs that there was no changing his thinking. The change in her world was described in clear details that made the book interesting. An ok read.

(Review)

(DISCLAIMER: This review is based on my opinion only and may contain coarse language)

In the last instalment of the Solis Invicti series, Emmy is forced to choose between running away with Ollie and keeping her humanity or choosing Sol, in which she has to turn Silver. As the Weepers get more and more out of control, time is ticking away as Emmy is forced to make her choice.

From the 2nd book I still had a tiny hope in my heart that I wanted Emmy to end up with Sol (Does she? Read the book and find out!) and he’s so level-headed.

The plot twist was great, I really didn’t expect that and I loved the development of this book. The stakes are as high as they have ever been and Emmy is left with the final choice that will seal her fate.

I was really satisfied with the ending, it was not perfect, but it was happy and for the best for everyone.

Although I didn’t emotionally connect with the story, I did with the characters and before I knew it, I was rooting strongly for them.

The Silver Bullet is the perfect ending written expertly by Josie Jaffrey. I can just say WOW. It is amazing how she brought this story home and she definitely saved best for last without a doubt! The plot was very well developed and still had some nice twists and turns hidden within, a few nice surprises and finally the last secrets were revealed. This book was very imaginative and well developed and climaxed the right way. The pace was perfect and it was difficult to put down, trust me I know, I had some very late night readings because of it.

Even with all this action, the author still does a lot of character development, of which Emmy gets the most since she is our main character of the story. Let's face it, if we really thought Emmy would finally learn and fully grow up, we were delusional, BUT she has come a long way and I can finally say I like her. I don't love her because she still makes decisions that I want to wring her neck for, but overall she is finally a likable character. Her bad decisions at least stem from a heart in the right place.

I was happy to see where Drew ended up in this final story as well as what the author made of Laila, who was a bit of a surprise in this last book. I admit I was a tad torn on Sol for a while but I finally get him, but at least with him I can say thinking back it all makes complete sense.

I really enjoyed how the author tied it all together in the end, and it was definitely not how I envisioned it. She had my mind wondering for a while how she would end it with the direction of the book was taking, just to spin it all the way around and give it a complete new twist. This series has been very imaginative and different. And even though I didn't like the main character for a good part of it, it made sense for this series and I think the author did a great job writing her the way she did, which I am sure was not easy since who would want their hero or heroine not be liked?

This was a fun series to read so if you like something different, mixed with romance, vampires, the end of the world and a well written series, well start from the beginning, you won't regret it!

This has been a hell of a ride! I absolutely hate that this ride is over. It’s a hair-raising roller coaster with ups and downs, twists and turns. First thought? Oh, wow! I love the Silver! Next? Sheesh, the Silver are evil and nasty! Hmmm...that sounds a lot like humans. I love Emmy to pieces, but I want to shake her until her teeth rattle! Gah! And Cam, sweet, sweet Cam. He would be a favorite in any story. Cam and Tommy are both Silver, both Solis Invicti, the personal guards of the Primus. Either could be the heroes in a different twist of the plot. The point is that the characters are written with amazing depth. Even the bad guys are multi-dimensional.

It’s easy to see, from the author profile, that Ms. Jaffrey is smart and well-educated. She showcases that in this series. Life after the events that put the Silver in charge is much like I could imagine under any powerful conquering regime that is fighting among themselves for the right to determine the usefulness of their captives. The question Emmy has to struggle with is whether to fight with the best of the Silver against the more brutal group, or to fight with the human rebels against them all. She doesn’t want to be seen as a collaborator by her few remaining human friends, but fears the human race will be destroyed if the current ruler, Solomon, is defeated.

Emmy faces choices every day. Does she want to believe her human friends or trust the conquering species? Dang! This is why I read...to live for a little while inside the imagination of a brilliant storyteller and writer. There are some hints that Ms. Jaffrey might be writing a spin-off series soon. I hope so. Grab your copies and...

Enjoy!

This ARC was sent to me in E book form, I was asked to give an honest review for a free copy.
Disclaimer:  There may be spoilers if you have not read the other 3 books!

Fourth week post the weepers coming out.  We follow Emmy and Ollie post another attack by Ben, accept this time Ben does not care about his own kind, everyone must go, or rebel with him.

Emmy annoys me, Sol has given her many chances to be with him, be safe.  Why can she not decide on a man, after all she has had Drew, Sol and now Ollie.  That is a lot of love triangles in just under 4 weeks.  But then again the feeling the world is ending can lead you to make last minute decisions.

Emmy passed the trials and is able to turn silver, however she now has a huge choice to make.  She has just found out that Sol, the leader has silvered for her - the biggest kept secret of all.  If Ben Succeeds in killing Emmy then he kills Sol, meaning one step closer to being the leader of the Solis Invicti.
Emmy still cannot make a decision argh.  She is stuck between a human life with hopes of a new beginning and perhaps a family one day, or does she turn silver, and go against everything she and her former friends believed in.
I cannot tell you too much more of the story as there would be too many spoilers.  This book is well worth the read to find out what Emmy chooses, the betrayal's and the change in relationships, the drama and the plots.

What is the silver bullet?,  does Sol find the answer to save the humans and his own kind? or is Ben going to put down anyone in his path to seek power?

You must read this book, but read the series first.

I finished this in one day and then annoyed my husband running at "Silver Speed" all day, but yet always announcing it before disappearing in a flash. :) He might have started reading this series now, just to understand all my references. I couldn't get this story out of my head the rest of the weekend after staying up to finish it one night.

The third book ended with the word, "Run". You can't just end a book with that and not expect me to stay up all night making sure she ran properly throughout this one! Emmy matured and developed as a character better than in any of the other books. The excitement throughout this one stayed at a level ten and I could not slow down. I loved the dynamic between Emmy and Laila and I think they made this entire series. I thought it was so clever on why they ended up having to work together and the author handled all the interactions brilliantly.

I did enjoy who she finally ended up with in this book, but I will say I was so off. In this first book I was torn rather I wanted her to end up with Drew or Sol, then the next book seemed to just extend that same dynamic and was my least favorite of the series because it didn't add as much new excitement. The third I was now deciding if I wanted Drew or Ollie and really in the fourth I was wondering between Drew, Ollie, or Sol, but at least now I knew who I wanted more confidently.

I'm struggling to get my thoughts together for this one. Everything that I wanted to happen worked out in ways that I thought were great! I also happened to see a mention at the back of the book that there's going to be another series following this one! Yes please!

- I was able to predict a lot more in this book. Normally that's a bad thing but I loved how everything turned out and there was still a lot of the unexpected. The plot flowed smoothly and just when I thought there wasn't enough pages to resolve anything, the author surprised me and finished off this series nicely. I can't wait to see what happens in the next one!

- I was sad that I didn't get to see some of my favourite side characters that much in this one but I was glad we gained a few new characters.

- I love how the villain of this series is never what you expect. He's not totally cruel and has a lot of sound logic, he just thinks a little too highly of himself. I was REALLY surprised to see some of the characters that were working with him. It's never who I think it is.

I'm trying to review this book without giving anything away about the whole series. I can tell you that I was consistently happy with how things were moving during the whole series. It felt like it was much longer than what it was (probably because I binge them all in a couple weeks). I think the series is wrapped up enough that you can stop here and be happy but there's also enough that another series will follow this one nicely. I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next!

I received a review copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. It has not affected my opinions.

THE SILVER BULLET opens with a bang and then doesn't let up.

The book picks up right where BOUND IN SILVER finished, in the thick of an attack (orchestrated by Ben, because of course he's behind it!) it's sets the pace for the rest of the book as Emmy tries to survive, finds a whole bunch of (not-so) safe houses, and finally makes her choice between Drew, Ben, and Sol.

Ollie was definitely the most shocking/emotional bit of the book. There's not much to say about it without spoilers other than "no." I'm very glad my two favourite Silvers get through unscathed.

Laila was so much fun in this book! She's spiky and doesn't care, and absolutely hates being forced into a mutual survival pact with Emmy, but that's why it's so good. She's brutal (her discussion of different killing methods is darkly amusing!) She's a minor antagonist/barrier to Emmy's hopes in previous books, so putting the two women together was such a good move for a jagged-edges but grudging respect dynamic.

It was a great series finale that has a blast with vampires and zombies in its action sequences. It felt like a paranormal movie, fast paced and full of thrills.

So, here we are, the final book in the Solis Invicti series.

Josie sent me the first book for review and I loved it so much that I bought the rest of the series (once the new covers were released, of course).

Now I have come to the end and I'm sad. I'm sad that it's the end and I'm sad that the ship I wanted didn't happen BUT I'm super happy because this book had me guessing at EVERY. SINGLE. TURN.
In fact, all of the books had me guessing. There wasn't a single thing (other than the relationship that ended up happening) that I saw coming. I was constantly surprised and forever gasping and saying "nooooo" to my book and it was just outstanding.

As ever, Josie's writing is fantastic and will forever be one of my favourite writers now. I have since ordered both The Gilded King and The Silver Queen in anticipation of her new book coming out next year.

I highly recommend this entire series. It never got boring, and it never let me down. It'll be one that I will be able to reread again and that's always a bonus for me. 5/5 stars!

I was so grateful to have had the whole series at hand when i read it.
I was so sad when i learned that this book is the last on the series.
this series is all i have ever wanted!! i mix of complicated as hell romance, deceptions, surprises, and most of all vampiress and zombies!!
in this last book we see Emmy journey, how she is coping with change. We follow her through a rough patch of her life, where everything is a mess, the city has fallen in the hands of the other rebels, humans were numbered and considered blood bags, a huge break pf promises with disappoint Emmy, she will befriend someone she though she would never even talk to...
the ending is so good for this series! its gives closure for the romantic story going on and makes me so excited to read anything Josie comes up with at this point! i am amazed by the writing, the details and the overall story!

OMGGGgggggg 😵

The first book was great even though I got tired of this whiny selfish BRAT of a heroine 😲. Then the second book, this B*tch is STILL "it's not MY fault", whining, but the story is good 🤔. But, this third book, I TRIED, I really tried to get past this whiny selfish brat and enjoy the story, but I couldn't get past the halfway point before I found myself Snapping at my hubby, cuz I'm so PISSED at this character 😖. And that's just WRONG 😝. So, if you LIKE your heroines whiny, selfish, bratty and just plain stupid, then I recommend this book highly, otherwise, don't bother 😣. I'm really sorry Josie, but you need to rewrite this character, because I don't think I'm the only one who can't stand her 🤓.

What a fantastic rollercoaster…

I mean the romance is perfect, the continuous twists and turns and urgh, everything is 11/10.

These books are addictive and the writing, characters, original world building. I love how flawed the characters are, but there is growth and fear and it just makes it feel a lot more real…

I feel like Jose Jaffrey is an extremely intelligent Author and I will recommend her forever. These books will stay with me 💕 thank you for the escapism.

Original review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Josie Jaffrey!

The Silver Bullet
is the fourth and final book in the Solis Invicti series. Emmy found out that Sol Silvered for her and in order to protect them, he turned Emmy Silver. But being Silver is not going to save her. Emmy, Sol, Drew, Oliver and Laila are hiding and training Emmy to become stronger. Everything is going okay until they figure out that Oliver has been playing them and is going to tell their plan to Ben, the one who desperately wants to be Primus. Will they make it out alive?

Like all the other books, there were a lot of plot twists. I didn’t see it coming that Oliver betrayed them. I couldn’t believe that he was so evil when in the Farm he was constantly sweet towards Emmy and protecting her. He’s such a dick!

And that Sol Silvered for Emmy was also surprising. I always thought Emmy was going to be together with Drew and that Sol was just a distraction. While reading the first book, I was never team Sol and also not when I was reading book 2 and book 3. He was so cold towards her when he Silvered for her, why not tell her? It would’ve been so much easier because Emmy was always thinking of her feelings for Drew and Sol and it was not easy for her. But hey, I’m happy that Emmy and Sol are together!

The Silver Bullet was a perfect ending for the series, but I still want more. It wouldn’t hurt to read another book about Emmy and Sol, right?! So please Josie, write another book, a short story is also good for me!
