Scott James (S.J.) Varengo was born in 1960, in a city called New York. Two years later he formed a band called The Beatles [citation needed].
He returned to New York City to attend Fordham University (having been told it was a basketball powerhouse) before transferring to the State University of New York at Potsdam (having been told it was located in the tropics), from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in Art History.
Varengo loves to read (favorite authors include Craig A. Hart, Kurt Vonnegut, J.R.R. Tolkien and an up-and-comer named Ernie Heming-something-or-other), listen to music (when he writes, it's usually jazz - the rest of the time it's Tasmanian flute concertos), and walk along forested trails with his wife Kim and their dog Tanner. He lives in Baldwinsville, NY, a suburb of Syracuse, known for its picturesque setting and its friendly people. He has two adult children of whom he is obnoxiously proud.
His published works include a volume of short fiction, two fantasy novels, and an ever-growing list of spy/espionage novellas, which he co-writes with Craig A. Hart.
A great addition to the 'Assignment'/SpyCo series, 'London' is Book 7. Scott Varengo and Craig A Hart capture the feeling of a Mission Impossible-type team, who are involved in international espionage and law-enforcement of the covert kind, in gritty multi-dimensional plots which showcase the teamwork and skills of MCs James Burke and Lyndsey Archer (his partner and sweetheart, who's missing presumed dead from the previous book in the series) and team/romantic partners, Adabelle Fox and Perry Hall. SpyCo's boss, J Carlton Moore is a shadowy Charlie's Angels-type mysterious figure, who never directly gets involved, but rather is a 'puppet-master' who maneuvers his agents according to need, or his whim - in this case sending the team to locate his housekeeper's 'missing' son, [who just happens to be the criminal kingpin the team should be/are concentrating their efforts to find, then halt this gruesome serial killer's, (all criminal victims) sociopathic path to underworld notoriety/ domination].
I liked the way the Agents interacted wit each other and were supportive and realistic in their behaviour and team work. The plot was fast-paced and packed in plenty of action and intrigue.
What I didn't like were the graphic torture scene and the gruesome revelation that the 'Velvet Glove' hid decapitated heads from his victims under his bed and sprayed strong air-freshener before the arrival of his dinner guests, to mask the smell of decomposition.
Most of all I detested the cut-off, sudden ending - totally unnecessary - that not only had a cliffhanger, [in the last line of the book] but dumped the reader with no hint nor warning - over the edge of said literary cliff! Maybe the next book is ready and waiting, but that's not a nice way to encourage one to buy it in, but increases the expectation and trepidation, of the same thing happening in that one too! A 'proper/standalone if desired, story would give its own incentive to keep reading the next one in a much more satisfying manner.
A talent of Hart and Varengo I love is being drawn into the story with the first pages. It felt so familiar to be back with Spyco: professionals in every way but also faithful friends encouraging and supporting each other. This is the episode I've waited for as we see if Lyndsey survived her fall from the cliff. Burke can't dwell on his grief, however, because he, Perry and Adabelle are in danger fighting deep in Whitechapel to stop a cruel and evil madman. I come out of my cozy mystery genre for these guys!
Craig Hart has done it again. The seventh book in the SpyCo series is his best yet. I love the characters and their interactions with each other. The stories or humorous and suspenseful. I strongly suggest you start from the first book and go through the entire series.
The SpyCo guys and gals are at it again - and these are the good guys! Smaj, The Velvet Glove and the Wolf are the bad guys ( really bad). Then there's Moore who is a bad good guy. Varengo's SpyCo Novella Book 7, Assignment: London continues the adventures of these globe-trotting spy pals.
Burke will not admit Lindsey is dead even though he saw her go over the cliff. His friend Perry tries to help him get over his grief. They both work for SpyCo and get involved in a case that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
