The Tay Son Uprising: Society and Rebellion in Eighteenth-Century Vietnam

"George Dutton has written the first detailed Western-language study of the Tây So’n movement, which permanently altered Vietnam’s political trajectory. But in so doing, he also provides a sensitive social and cultural analysis of the pre-1800 Vietnamese-speaking world as a whole, and indeed one of the most detailed descriptions of any late 18th-century society in Southeast Asia." ―Victor Lieberman, University of Michigan

"It is difficult to overstate the significance of George Dutton’s terrific new book. The Tây So’n Uprising represents the first serious western-language account of the intricate sequence of political developments that define the Tây So’n era and that arguably mark the onset of modernity in Vietnam. In addition to providing a vividly evocative narrative of the complex political history of the period, Dutton offers lucid and judicious interpretations of the origins, evolution and downfall of the uprising and of its consequences for a wide range of social groups, political forces and ethnic communities. The level of research and historical craftsmanship is superb, and Dutton’s frequent reflections on relevant theoretical and historiographical issues make for fascinating reading. In short, this is a stunning accomplishment and a major contribution to the study of Vietnamese history and historiography." ―Peter Zinoman, University of California, Berkeley

The Tây So’n uprising (1771–1802) was a cataclysmic event that profoundly altered the eighteenth-century Vietnamese political and social landscape. This groundbreaking book offers a new look at an important and controversial era. George Dutton follows three brothers from the hamlet of Tây So’n as they led a heterogeneous military force that ousted ruling families in both halves of the divided Vietnamese territories and eventually toppled the 350-year-old Lè dynasty. Supplementing Vietnamese primary sources with extensive use of archival European missionary accounts, he explores the dynamics of an event that affected every region of the country and every level of society. Tracing the manner in which the Tây So’n leaders transformed an inchoate uprising into a new political regime, Dutton challenges common depictions of the Tây So’n brothers as visionaries or revolutionaries. Instead, he reveals them as political opportunists whose worldview remained constrained by their provincial origins and the exigencies of ongoing warfare and political struggles.

A fascinating summary about Tay Son Uprising. I pickup the book because I was curios about the Western point of view, and the author did a good job. If you're (maybe a foreigner) don't know much about the Tay Son Uprising and/or the society of Vietnam at that time, this is a good one to go. It's also good for some hardcore nationalist Vietnamese who over-idolize the god-above-all Quang Trung and his divine army. Don't get me wrong, I also very much admire Quang Trung for his exceptional leadership and vision, but the propaganda is just too much. He's still not a god, just a man who take his chance.

Other than that, if you're not 1 of those 2, then this book won't be much help, since it's just a summary. However maybe you can still pick something up, since the author cover a large amount of topic, about the Vietnam's noble, farmer, intellectual, bandit, army, religion, culture.....

Amazing analysis of Tay Son Uprising. Strip out of much bias from your current Vietnamese textbook, the book provides a more objective view of the uprising & the social context of this chaotic period. Highly recommended.

Very good history of the Tay Son uprising. Argues very convincingly of the importance of this moment and of the complexities of the regime/movement. This is exactly how the history of a rebellion should be written.

George Dutton fine study of the Tay Son Rebellion (1771-1785) is an essential addition to books on Vietnam. Three brothers from the village of Tay Son ("Western Mountain") quickly conquered the area around modern Qui Nhon, which was then lightly populated and quickly defeated the Nguyen lords of Southern Vietnam, the Trinh Lords of the North, and the tottering Le emperors in Thang Long (Modern Hanoi).

The Tay Son would sweep the old Le-Trinh-Nguyen order away, but subsequent Nguyen scholarship in the 19th century characterized the Tay Son as "bandits", but modern socialist scholarship has highlighted the peasant and egalitarian character of the Tay Son. Moreover, the Tay Son was able to repel a Qing chinese army sent to restore the Le emperor. In the eyes of modern Socialist Vietnam, the Tay Son were precursors of the redistributive structure of communism.

Dutton writes about how this modern viewpoint often obscures the nature of the Tay Son from both Vietnamese and Western first hand accounts. First, the peasantry were as tired of the Tay Son regime as they were of the late Le. Second, the various subgroups of Vietnam were not harmoniously united under the Tay Son banner as the Tay Son massacred many ethnic Chinese of the coast, a point which Dutton notes has been obscured by modern Vietnamese scholarship.

The final winner in the Tay Son rebellion was the Nguyen who fled to Thailand but returned to conquer the remains of the Tay Son regime. This man, the future emperor Gia Long, created a dynasty that would last until 1945.

The Tay Son remains an important point in Vietnam's development and Dutton's study allows the English-speaking world to understand this crucial event in Vietnam.
