What a pleasant surprise. Bethany is a travelling minstrel and a necromancer who just wants to help people. She crosses paths with a surly mercenary named Elissar and start travelling in search of a group of necromancers who just want to live normal lives. I love the dichotomy between the two characters. Bethany is pure goodness while Elissar is a surly drunk with a murky past. Sam Beck's illustrations are great. I love how Bethany is always being followed by dead forest creatures. When will ...more

*I received an ecopy of this book via Edelweiss. This has not influenced my review.*

This was a fun little graphic novel, and I enjoyed it!

First things first, the artwork was clear, detailed, in full color, and a pleasure to look at.

The characters were cute. The protagonist was a naive, adventurous necromancer/bard who was followed around by strangely cute half-decomposed dead animals and who occasionally brought people back to life-ish. The other main character was a sarcastic,

*I received this book as an eARC from Vault Comics via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review*

A necromancer minstrel! Bethany is kindhearted and moral, but she can also bring people back to life and control them. This comic takes a lot of fantasy tropes and flips them. The meet cute in this book is so twisted, I love it. Two women form an adventuring group. The dynamic between each of the characters is so great. Bethany is so moral, but she's surrounded by quite the opposite.

It's nice to see

Why can't the second volume be out already? I loved this! This is the perfect graphic novel for anyone who is a fan of Dungeons and Dragons. It also has some kicck-butt heroines! Gorgeous illustrations too! Loved it!

Vault brings us comics about young female necromancer with attitude (and kind of naive). I was lured by great covers from Tess Fowler, but art by Sam Beck was a little bit of disappointment. It got that enthusiast artist webcomics look, which looks bit cheap and, well, bit amateurish. But it gets the job done. I really enjoyed the story even if it's not any masterpiece. But sometimes it could be a bit annoying for me thanks to the usage of "story movers" which I hate - dumb decisions, obvious ...more

I'll tell a tale of a bard and thief, and how they traveled the lands. A drink, a copper, a moment in time to tell the story of this Necromancer's trials

I never wanted to be a bard (not even in RPGs) because I hate putting to song things. But why not try right?

SONGS FOR THE DEAD is a high fantasy comic about the young bard/necromancer Bethany traveling to give necromancers a better name and the thief/adventurer Elissar getting caught up in it.

In general you'll know the fantasy tropes well here

This was an intertaining story with some likeable characters & some unlikable characters, we have the neive re-animator who is very new to this beeing on the run sword fighting life style & the alcoholic guard who is no stranger to sword play & seem's a bit jaded by life already . The two play well of each other & help balance things out so that you get some light tones mixed with some more darker, grittier moments . the art was fun & expressive with nice bright colors which ...more

This was a delightful surprise and all of the Dragon Age references are amazing. Bethany is a necromancer, which is not the sort of magic smiled upon in this realm. At the beginning of the graphic novel, she finds herself at a notice board and sees a reward for a missing boy. She ventures into the woods and raises the boy from the dead - this simple act leads her on quite an adventure - as she evades capture and befriends Elissar, who looks exactly like Cassandra Pentaghast... Anyways, a ...more

I really enjoyed this one! This is why I love reading books that I might not normally find thanks to the book/blogging community I've joined in the past few years. This comic seems to be largely unknown and yet it's one of my favorites of the year! I loved the story and characters, and while I did struggle in a few places, mostly fight scenes, to keep up with the action, I loved reading about all the

This comic series has the promise of a really great premise. Necromance +bard+drunken sell-sword? It sounds great in the description. I had a hard time, however, connecting to the plot and characters. Every bit of dialogue seemed bogged down in exposition. Great promise, but the story structure needs some big work.

I could not put this graphic novel down. I picked it up after reading the first issue of Necromancers Map and I had to know more about the characters. I love the art and the quick, simple storytelling. New fan, right here, for sure.

Very good idea, great development and an incredible art. The two characters are like tqo faces of the same coin, that's why they work so well together qhile being so different. I cannot help but wait for a volume 2 although this seems to be a single mini series. Hope it is not!

Maybe more of a 3.5. It didn’t capture my attention until the last few pages.

The art style is beautifully done. The story line is interesting and kept me guessing. I really liked Bethany and liked that Elissar was a more prickly character.
