They say the pen is mightier than the sword. In Sleepwater’s world, words are literally more powerful than bullets.

Leo could always make people believe anything she says—really believe. When her chest burns and the words come from her mouth, her targets’ eyes glaze over, they forget their own thoughts, and they’ll do anything she says. It’s what keeps her alive after bei

I love reading this book and these few words at the beginning.
For those who believe in the power of words, even when they don't seem to be enough. Convince yourself, and that's all that matters.

Leo is a character, who is very persuasive, and makes anyone believe her in anything she says.

Leo is accused by the clerk of stealing and she is questioned by a cop, who wants to search her bag. But Leo is too smart and makes the cop believe she bought a candy bar, switching sides, telling the cop, tha
This is an unusual dystopian tale as it doesn't focus so much on the world as it does on the characters in it. It's a slow-burn personal story that morphs into thriller territory as it goes along, though that slow-burn could feel to me a little too slow for the first 50% or so. It's in no hurry to reveal what on earth is actually going on, and it's a shame to think I nearly DNF'd because of that. There are some moments of really inspired writing.

Our story follows Leo, a girl with no place to cal

Vermont author Kathrin Hutson is also a fiction ghostwriter, an Independent Editor through her company KLH CreateWorks, and Fiction Co-Editor for Burlington’s Mud Season Review. She has penned two series – the diptych GYENONA’S CHILDREN and the trilogy THE UNCLAIMED – and now surpasses her earlier fine work with this stunning science fiction dystopian novel, SLEEPWATER BEAT that serves as the initial volume for her new series BLUE HELIX.

Leo, a "beat spinner" who can literally impact people with words, joins an underground organization of her fellows in this exciting book.

I've always disliked the saying "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me." Words can cause irreparable psychological harm, but what if language was
Leo can persuade people to see things her way, convince others they didn’t see it, or that they imagined it a different way. Living on the streets has taught her a few things, suspicion is one of them. So when a random man takes her in, she readily accepted the offer. (I was surprised she wasn’t more resistant, but could a spinner be making her mind up?)
To be honest, I think Leo was looking for a connection, maybe even someone to care about her.
And when she gets a job spinning stories and illu

This initial entry into the series focuses on Leo and her experiences. The first section of the book delves deeply into Leo's background. She encounters Karl, who ushers her into the world of Sleepwater, which, for the bulk of the novel, is a mystery to Leo. In addition, Karl introduces Leo to more people who share similar abilities.

I really enjoyed this novel. The pacing is slower than I might have expected, with the action really starting to ramp up well after the halfway point. I found this w

Dystopian novels can be heavy and hard going. Sleepwater Beat certainly shows us the protagonist having a hard time, which I saw from one other reviewer proved too much. For me though, the unique elements of the sci-fi and novel powers the characters possess, mixed with the gritty and fresh youthful voice of the writing made it all worthwhile. Centred around one specific group of people, the clever dropping of background information scattered throughout the story keeps us hanging on and fills in ...more

I love reading this book,Leo is very persuasive and makes anyone and everyone believe her with anything she says.I couldn't find no fault with this story line it was fantastic word building tho a little slow to get started, but stick with it because its well rounded characters and a fully satisfying ending. I cant give no higher praise in this really do feel like you are part of it. This is a quick read so perfect if your after something less time consuming.

The writing is brilliant in places, but I had trouble with the pacing in many spots. The opening hooked me, but then the story seemed to drift along for far too long. I put it down a couple of times, and almost did not pick it back up the last time (almost mid point). After that, the story seemed to catch its pace and the clicked along just fine. I would have liked more of Karl's viewpoint, and more of the other characters--that would have helped add depth and better pacing, or at least a relief ...more

One of the best one off books I have read in a while. Some of Kathrine's best work. I have been a fan of this author for a long time now, and though I have been rather critical of some books, there has always been an entertaining and enjoyable product with each effort. I can find no fault with this story. Excellent world building, well rounded characters, and a fully satisfying ending. I can give no higher praise. This is a quick read, around five hours uninterrupted. Time well spent! ...more

I struggled with the beginning of this story, it was at about the 50% mark before I really got hooked. I almost put it down and I’m glad I didn’t. A little bit sci-fi, a little bit dystopian and so close to reality it’s a scary. Well written and a thought out plot that once it takes off it doesn’t stop. Can’t wait to read the next book and see what happens with this group.

Sleepwater Beat, by Kathrin Hutson, is the first in the Blue Helix series. The first taste of this speculative fiction world immerses us immediately with an honest certainty. I read the sequel first--so each installment can and does stand on its own. Here, we follow Leo, a young woman raised in a world of pharmaceutical addiction and information overload. Told in alternating timelines of her past and present, we watch her go from a lonely childhood and street life to the tentative relief of a fo ...more

I loved this book far more than I usually love stories based on people with special skills. I liked the characters immensely and the way the story was revealed, bit by bit. I also appreciated that there was a distinct end point, so while it's set up for the sequel, you don't feel like it's stopped midstory on you! ...more

Sleepwater Beat

This book has everything someone could associate with. It gets you thinking about the "what ifs" things may be happening today and repercussions that could come of them. Leo is a girl from a home that, for all intensive purposes, would be invisible. But she's tough and got through everything no matter how much it hurt.

This is the 1st book I've read written by Kathrin Hutson; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I can’t wait to read more of her books.

The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

I loved the chemistry between the characters.

I was hooked from the first page and could not put it down. This is the first book I have read by this author but it will be the first of many. What a unique storyline! Kathrin Hutson vividly builds a world with a new twist on a dystopian society.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a special talent where people would believe anything you say? Or you could make people feel a certain way? Pain? Sexual desire? Kill? Words are powerful. These are called beats.
Leo has a talent that people believe anything that comes out of her mouth.
Karl notices her talent and introduces Leo to Sleepwater, an underground world where there are others like her. Beat spinners. Things are not always as they seem. Little does Leo know her world is about to be turned upsi
