Everyday Yoga Meditation

Rate this book
A beautiful colour, illustrated book of authentic Yoga Meditation techniques that encourage the practice of Yoga in its broadest sense – as a vehicle for calming the mind, enhancing awareness and contentment, and developing deep inner peace.

Drawing mainly on the tradition of Kriya Yoga – the goal of which is to attune individual consciousness with the Divine, or Universal, Consciousness – yoga and meditation teacher Stephen Sturgess reveals in this book how to progress beyond the supple body to the vital, contented mind.

After first explaining the deep value of Yoga Meditation, outlining the Eight Limbs of Yoga (as presented by ancient sage Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras text) and giving clear, comprehensive explanations of our internal energy system (including kundalini, chakras, nadis, the three bodies and the five sheaths), Stephen then goes on to present a wide range of yoga practices that can be used as a regular holistic health programme. If we were to view the body as a temple, the combination of asana, purification and pranayama practices first cleans the temple windows – building the physical body and mind – while the meditations then shine light into the inner sanctum – lighting up the Inner Self and enabling a deep sense of spirituality and peace.

A section at the end is then devoted to helping readers develop their personal practice, including advice on living with increased awareness, how to make yoga meditation a daily reality and a range of specially designed morning and evening routines, from a 15-minute programme up to 1 hour 45.

In summary, readers are guided on a practical and nurturing journey towards a sense of enhanced calm, joy, happiness, harmony and personal fulfilment in life, where they will experience their fullest potential for both creative thought and action.

Stephen Sturgess is a London-based yoga and meditation teacher and author of books on related topics. Everyday Yoga Meditation is a superb instruction manual for those who wish to begin meditation and require an easy to follow guide. Written in an easy, conversational style with short, easily digestible chapters it not only directs you on where to start, but it also has a lot of excellent information on the history and background of meditative practices. It manages the fine balancing act of providing enough information to engage readers but not enough to overwhelm. This is a book primarily written for beginners with clear, sound explanations and descriptions and is the ideal guide for those new to yoga and meditation.

What's particularly great about it is that it is so, so comprehensive, but the style and structure in which it is written means it can be dipped in and out of at will. It brings together all the information you could ever need to know on the topic and combines it all into a single book. There are also some very useful pictures for those who find it simpler to learn from visuals. It includes information on the history of yoga, the methodologies and the benefits it can bring to those who use it. There are many similar books to this on the market, but I feel that the orderly fashion in which it is set out and the beautiful illustrations and solid information makes this one of the best. Overall, this is an approachable and user-friendly compendium that will be helpful to novices right through to dedicated yogis. An indispensable resource you will return to again and again.

Many thanks to Watkins Publishing for an ARC.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Watkins Publishing and Stephen Sturgess for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are 100% my own and independent of receiving an advance copy.

This is a comprehensive guide to yoga poses, yoga breathing and anything else you would need to complete your yoga practice. Really incredible!! It comes complete with descriptions and illustrations for everything that it discusses. The focus is on Raja Yoga or the yoga of meditation. We get a little theory that is relevant and makes the connection as to why it is important to make this part of every day. Once you understand the philosophy of the importance of quieting your mind and looking inside, the yoga poses make more sense and take on a higher purpose. He covers everything from the eight limbs, chakras, asanas, pranayama, and so much more. There is whole chapter on how to sit! He talks about the positioning of your hands (and other body parts), how to warm up and breaks down the sun salutation. There a couple of sequences that he lays out as well as a cool down. He also gives you the tools and recipes of how to create complete routines on your own. There is also chapters on meditation, chanting and so much more. What I found unique in his book, was the complete explanation of breathing techniques. Having taken yoga for a number of years now, I was a little confused about a certain technique and honestly, his explanation really cleared it up for me. Overall, I understood so much more about my practice and what my teachers have been doing all this time! This is something I will read again and keep on hand. The illustrations are clear and informative. Again, if you are a newbie, you must get into a class or find a teacher, because you can’t just learn yoga from a book. But it sure does help to have it explained in clear diagrams and easy to understand language. I appreciate that you can take what you have learned and put it into practice and build on it all on your own. Really great read, I learned so much.

I would like to thank the publisher, Watkins Publishing and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of Everyday Yoga Mediation by Stephen Sturgess.

This book is excellent in my opinion as it really gives you a back ground on yoga in a nutshell and then proceed to explain different mediation methods with very clear, step by step instructions.

The books is easy to read as it has a very easy flow, but still contains so much information that the reader will revisit this book again and again.. I also like the cover very much and it seems like a small book so this book will make a great gift.

I have been practicing yoga for a couple of years now and meditation for about two years, and I find the information in the book very useful.

I really like this book, I highly recommend this book!

A fantastic introduction to basics of yoga and meditation. Very informative without being overwhelming and simple enough to understand easily.
I have been practising yoga for about 5 years now and mindfulness & meditation for about a year, and I own several books on each subject yet I love reading more in the hope of learning something new.
If you are interested in yoga and meditation, this book is perfect for you. The book is well divided into small(ish) chapters that are easy to digest and you can dive in and out of the book as you like without being confused.
I will definitely use this book in the future and I highly recommend it!

Thank you NetGalley, the author and the publishers for my free advanced copy to review!

Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.

This is a wonderful introductory guide to meditation. I have read this book and reviewed it many times already, it is a wonderful guide to everyday practice. I will definitely be buying this guide book to have in my yoga room for further exploration. Although not a novice at yoga, meditation to me is somewhat new and I learned so much from this book. It will definitely help me further my practice and find my inner me.

A book I will be referring to again and again and will be a great part of my practice.

I have now read this book once, but this is more of a useful tool to study over a long time. It contains a huge amount of information, and is really comprehensive. Even though the title is "Meditation", it's about almost all sides of Yoga.
The language is clear and concise, and there are lots of helpful pictures. The only thing I don't like, and this is true of almost all books on Yoga, are things presented as facts, even though they are incorrect, not proven or mere symbolic. But I understand the need for using symbols to explain things, so not too bad.

I loved the simplicity of this book. It was very concise and straight to the point. The pictures add to the ease of reading the book. I enjoyed going through this book but as I was reading it seemed to take on the flow of every other yoga book I've read with the position poses and description. I was disappointed there wasn't something that set it apart from all other books in the same category. That being said this is a good and informative read.

This is a very informative Yoga book, there is a lot of information for anyone wanting to learn more than just the poses. I'll probably use this as more of a guide to go over as I further my yoga practices, as it was too much information to process in one reading for me (I'm a beginner).

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. The books is broken up to eight different parts. I have been trying to find ways to bring my calm back. I get a lot of migraines and it usually happens when I am stressed or worried about something. I requested this book to see if it could help me with my stress. I found that this helps breathe and focus on myself. That is not something a do a lot of. It gave me a chance to focus on myself and that makes me feel much better about myself. I can cope with the pain and lack of energy for this helps me built it up natural.

The publisher provided me with the opportunity to read this in exchange for providing feedback. (via NetGalley)

A few formatting issues (I assume are arc related) led to a couple sections being a little hard to follow but overall, I thought this was a good, informative read.

Free digital copy via netgalley. A very nice book with good inspiration for everyday meditation. Digital copy could be optimised. Unfortunately not available as a hard copy in Germany as I would have liked to keep on reading even after the digital copy had expired.

Good introduction, gets all the proper term and techniques. It maybe more difficult for people not use to these practices. And for those too accustomed to these techniques it don’t add anything. But it’s perfect for those in between

This is a great book for a beginner. The book has tips for every aspect of yoga: breathing, meditation, and yoga poses. It is easy to follow and there are great illustrations of how each pose should look. This book can be finished in one sitting but can also be used to refer back to different tips and poses along your yoga journey.

I voluntarily agreed to read a copy of this book supplied by NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own and in no way have been influenced.

I liked this book. It was informative and great for a beginner and also for someone who has done yoga in the past. The photos could've been bigger but otherwise a great read. I liked this book better than other yoga books on the shelf. Ommmmmmm!
