“It really doesn’t matter how many secret fighting arts you learn; they just don’t teach you how to fight squirrel cats in assassin school.”
Queenslayer is the fifth instalment in the Spellslinger series which continues the developed storyline created with the prior four in the series.

QUEENSLAYER - Episode 5
On this episode of Spellslinger, Kellen STILL doesn't level up.
This book series has been like an anime for me. Each book feels like it's own episode where the MC continues to make a name for themselves by being the reluctant hero. The problem is, Kellen is suppose to be extremely clever, but he's still just getting lead around by the nose. This is the 5th book and he's still asking himself the "who am I" and "am I good or evil" questions.
He STILL only has ONE MOVE. ...more

In this penultimate installment of the Spellslinger series, our hapless protagonist Kellen Argos has once again traveled to a new place and embroiled himself in yet another sticky political situation in which he really can’t afford to make a single mistake. Fortunately, by his side is Reichis, his trusty sidekick (sorry, business partner) who is a cantankerous squirrel cat with the heart of a lion and the mouth of a ...more

By this point, I CANNOT put this series down. It has the light adventure feel with all the darker currents of modern fantasy while being a YA with a lovable trickster with a nasty penchant for destroying everything he grows to love.
*Sigh*
But you know what? It' impossible not to love it. It's like a YA version of Brust's Vlad series with the hardcore coolness of applied magic a-la Sanderson's Law. (Magic must make sense, have rules, be awesome.) :)

I LOVE THIS SERIES! It seriously brings me so much joy. Kellen is growing so much and it's lovely to see. This book had way more political intrigue than I expected but I was engrossed. I really liked all the court machinations as well as the new characters we were introduced too. Shalla continues to be a pain in the arse for Kellen and Reichis continues to steal the show (as well as the butter biscuits).
5 stars, naturally!

I hate to say this but feel like I'm reading the same book over and over. The characters never seem to do anything that changes my opinion about them. Kellen and his sister have the same conversation three times every book. Kellen and Reichis have the same conversation five times every book. Kellen and whatever person he has just met that now hates him with a passion have the same interaction with the same result three times a book and finally, as always, Kellen arrives at a strange place with

"Kellen, maybe there is something inside you that you can't change. Perhaps the shadowblack truly is evil. But maybe it takes more than that. Maybe evil is only evil when it's what we can't change combined with that we choose not to."

I settled back into this one with joyous expectation as Kellen was every bit as sneakily desperate and Reichis as snarkily bloodthirsty as before. Kellen is now confronted with court politics and to be honest – he’s way outside his comfort zone. As he tries to keep himself, his squirrel cat and a number of other random folks alive, he finds himself up against all sorts of foes. Including his sister… By now, there is a hefty backstory that has built up and my firm advice is not to jump into this

I think my favorite thing about this series was always the character-building. Kellen probably is my favorite character ever: he is a real smart-ass, clever and quick-minded, also one-part clumsy, one-part genius and one-part idiot. But what I always loved about him that he is kind of sensitive and was never really able to restrain his feelings. We could see him complain, we could see him cry, being bratty or even heart-broken. Like a normal teenage boy whose life turned upside down.

I feel like Queenslayer gave me the most Greatcoats vibe. Talk about Kellen being faced with the task of trying to figure out how to help this eleven year old monarch in the face of corruption, against some terrifying odds. It has all the makings of a fabulous book about Kellen. But what really pushed it over the top for me in Queenslayer is that Kellen has really figure out how he ...more

I've discovered that a death sentence can be somewhat liberating for someone who's spent their life curtsying.
I've always enjoyed this series and still do, for the obvious reasons: Good worldbuilding, interesting characters, good writing style, nice plot and you never know what to expect - also: no one ever says what they actual mean. You need to think in this one. Concerning the characters in this book, it's especially Tasia that came to the forefront for me, and it's a shame she doesn't have ...more

I considered DNFing this at 75% because it took a turn I absolutely hated. I had loved the direction it was heading and then it did something unforgivable in my opinion. I want to finish the series which is why I continued but I could not get past it the moment and enjoy the last quarter of the book.

Kellen is making my heart hurt. Someone hug the poor boy and then not let him down afterward please and thank.
This was definitely darker than the previous entries in the series, much closer in tone to the Greatcoats (which I also love). I don't mind a dark tone but there was something about the portrayal of women in this book that made me uncomfortable. Certainly that one scene was fucking horrifying, holy shit. I hope the final book in the series veers away from this a bit more.

Again the perfect combination of action and mental dueling that makes Sebastian books great.
Kellen is a great character that has developed well over the series and still living Reichis.
Great story and lots of twists and turns again, and even at the end there are still uncertainty around what happened and who pulled the strings. Great stuff.

A darker turn for the series.
The Spellslinger series has always had a grim underside offset by snarky humor and flashy action scenes. Queenslayer flips the dark underbelly topside. The hopeful optimism seen in previous entries is replaced with world-weary cynicism.
Kellen is meaner now. He's less compelled by heroic influences and increasingly prone to ugly pragmatism. We see precious little of Kellen the Argosi, and quite a bit of Kellen the Spellslinger.

Well. I can’t even respond to all the political goings on in this book! There are so many, and it’s so complication. De Castell does an amazing job of bringing that home to the reader. Nothing is ever clear and I was definitely kept guessing the whole way.
I loved Queen Ginevra, she may be 11 but she is made of steel and awesomeness.
And Kellen continues to be his foolhardy self. I like how much is made of him being a coward here, and how he’s coming to terms with his warring instincts. I’m with ...more

The fifth Spellslinger book featuring Kellen and his business partner, squirrel-cat Reichis, who are in Darome, and still separated from Kellen's Argosi mentor. Kellen has inadvertently committed treason by smearing (his) blood on the Daroman flag and he's about to be executed when the eleven year old Queen Genevra demands he become her tutor of cards. This is his get-out-of-jail-free card, but Kellen is immediately embroiled in court machinations The political twists are… twisty. His sister

Okay, so I didn't enjoy Queenslayer quite as much as the other books in the Spellslinger series, but I still really loved it.
The plot focuses a lot on the political machinations of the Daroman Empire it is clear very early on that no one can be trusted. I feel like this was one of the downfalls for me personally, because I find it really difficult to feel for characters when I doubt their every word. Moreover, I couldn't get with the romantic side ...more

It makes me sad closing that last page in any of the books in this series. Knowing this is the penultimate one made it harder. Finishing it in one day... even harder, felt I should of savoured it.. dragged out more. I feel like I'm holding Kellens hand and going through everything with him and knowing I only have one book left of his adventures with Reichis actually brings me down a bit... does that make sense?

While I did enjoy this instalment more than I did Soulbinder, I unfortunately felt that it had many of the same issues. Once again, it is a story that focuses on Kellen and Reichis alone as they are still separated from their old group and this time find themselves in the high courts of Darome. The story this time is quite different from those that came before, as Kellen finds himself in a delicate tale of political intrigue. While perhaps not as action-packed as previous instalments, Kellen

Listened tot he audiobook of this and loved it. Kellen gets put through the ringer over and over again which makes your heart absolutely break for him, Reichus too. Plenty of twists and turns, interesting characters and brilliant narration by Joe Jameson again. Looking forward to the next and last one even though I'll probably end up crying!
