Sara Paretsky is a modern American author of detective fiction. Paretsky was raised in Kansas, and graduated from the state university with a degree in political science. She did community service work on the south side of Chicago in 1966 and returned in 1968 to work there. She ultimately completed a Ph.D. in history at the University of Chicago, entitled The Breakdown of Moral Philosophy in New England Before the Civil War, and finally earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Married to a professor of physics at the University of Chicago, she has lived in Chicago since 1968.
The protagonist of all but two of Paretsky's novels is V.I. Warshawski, a female private investigator. Warshawski's eclectic personality defies easy categorization. She drinks Johnnie Walker Black Label, breaks into houses looking for clues, and can hold her own in a street fight, but also she pays attention to her clothes, sings opera along with the radio, and enjoys her sex life.
Paretsky is credited with transforming the role and image of women in the crime novel. The Winter 2007 issue of Clues: A Journal of Detection is devoted to her work.
Her two books that are non-Warshawski novels are : Ghost Country (1998) and Bleeding Kansas (2008).
I read this book in purpose of improving my skill in English and the rating, ⭐️⭐️⭐️, is not about story, but is about its avail of enhancing my English abilities.
Crime Story Collection - John Turvey (Adapter), Celia Turvey (Adapter), Margery Allingham, Sue Grafton, Simon Brett, Sara Paretsky, Patricia Highsmith, Jack Ritchie, Colin Dexter (2000) [Penguin Readers Intermediate (Level 4)]
Themes: Crime and Retribution/ Misjudgement or Judging by Appearances/ Framing People for Crime
Opener: “At five o’clock on a September afternoon, Ronald Torbay was making preparations for his third murder. He was being very careful. He realized that murdering people becomes more dangerous if you do it often.”
Summary: Eight stories about crime. Hey, at least you are not being misled by the title of the book.
Verdict: Other than At the Old Swimming Hole by Sara Paretsky, which was somewhat interesting as it had the vibe of mainstream detective shows like Castle or The Mentalist, the others were basically duds. Ideas, when half decent, are either poorly executed or written in the most insipid way possible. Don’t have much to say about any of them.
Three Is a Lucky Number by Margery Allingham How's Your Mother? by Simon Brett The Absence of Emily by Jack Ritchie The Inside Story by Colin Dexter Really worth 5 stars.
3.75 Me encantaron las historias y la verdad son muy interesantes aunque son muy básicas. Es muy fácil saber quién es el asesino, pero dentro de todo estuvo muuuy bien. Disfrute mucho la lectura
Penguin Readers Level 4 Time:1/14- 50 minutes 15 - 50 minutes Seven word summary: murder - bathroom - woman - marry - kill - will - money Discussion Question: Q1: If your spouse try to kill you for getting your private property, what do you do? I investigate my supouse carefully and call police for protecting myself. Q2: Do you want to work as police? I don't want to work because it's difficult work and cannot make myself dangerous.
There are 8 stories in the book. 'Three Is a Lucky Number' is most interesting story I read. The main character was a matrimonial swindler. And he did again and again. However, the last target was clever and noticed what he did. I don't like the book about crime and detective mystery. but The book is including some jokes and uniques so I enjoyed reading the book.
I updated two more book reviews of Christmas Wedding on 'comments'. I'm sorry that I'm late. Please read these.
