Hotshot Doc

Rate this book
Dr. Russell has a bad reputation around our hospital. The scrub techs say he’s cold-blooded, the nurses say he’s too cocky for his own good, and the residents say he’s the best surgeon in the world—really, just a swell guy!—on the off chance he’s within earshot.

I try to avoid him and his temper at all costs. It’s just as easy to admire his sexy, grip-it-while-he’s ravishing-you hair and chiseled jaw from a healthy distance, preferably from the other end of the hallway half-hidden behind a plant.

Unfortunately, my plan crumbles when my trusty ol’ boss decides to swap his white coat for a Hawaiian shirt. His retirement leaves me with two terrible options: switch specialties and spend months retraining, or take an open position as Dr. Russell’s surgical assistant.

That means I have to stand near him in the OR for hours on end and anticipate his every need without letting his biting words and bad attitude intimidate me. Oh, and as if that’s not difficult enough, my silly crush on him—the one I’ve tried to stomp on until it disappears—might just be reciprocated.

It’s fine.
I’m fine.

I take my job seriously. There will be no smoldering bedroom eyes across the operating table, no angry almost-kisses in the storage closet. (Well, no more of those.)

What’s the phrase? An apple a day keeps the doctor away?
Maybe I should go for a whole damn bushel.

Hotshot Doc is a brand new stand alone by an author I can’t seem to get enough of, R.S. Grey. Every one of her books is so different. I didn’t quite know what to expect with this one and I ended up being amazed. These characters…! I can’t wait to tell you about them.

Bailey Jennings might have entertained the idea of studying medicine at a point many years ago. But at the age of twenty, her parents were killed and she became the guardian of her little sister, Josie. Never for a minute did she regret her choice. She loves her sister and they have a wonderful relationship. Now, Bailey is a surgical assistant to a wonderful doctor in the spinal department. Only, her perfect boss is retiring. There is only one other doctor in their department that needs a new assistant and he is the very last doctor Bailey wants to work for.

stethoscope

Dr. Matthew (Matt) Russell has chosen pediatric spinal surgery as his specialty. Only Dr. Russell has a reputation at their hospital. He can’t seem to hold on to an assistant. His former assistants claim to needing therapy after their time with him. He is brutal. He is also beautiful. Bailey has been noticing him for some time. But she has never spoken to him. She knows all about his reputation. But it isn’t until she sits in on one of his surgeries that she gets it. That she witnesses his talent.

hotshot doc r.s. grey

Bailey and Matt get off to a rough start. But they develop a respect for one another and yes, there is chemistry! Lots and lots of chemistry. The kind of chemistry that can’t stay contained forever. And when it is finally released, it’s earth shattering.

Kissing In Cars

Can they continue a working relationship, though, while pursuing a personal one as well? And of course, just when they think things are perfect, life throws them a curve ball.

I loved this book, every word of every page. Matt and Bailey were wonderful. Matt’s transformation was beautiful. Bailey’s little sister was a show stealer. She was adorable. I also really enjoyed Matt’s younger brother, Cooper. Even though he wasn’t in this much.

surgical assistant

This was such a wonderful book. These characters have stolen my heart. R.S. Grey is one of those authors that you know before you open Chapter one that you are going to be in for a wonderful ride. And that’s exactly what she gave me with Hotshot Doc. I can’t wait to see what she is going to do next.

This book had a premise of becoming a great read for me.
The hero, who saved children; a heroine, who raised her sister; non-manwhore hero, non-virginal heroine; sweet epilogue.

But... As an adult woman with some life experience, I just don't get why any smart woman would pine for a man, who is rude to her...
I. Just. Don't. Get. It!!!

What bothered me a lot: the way the author turnded a professional decent woman into a confusing hormonal mess... She was never late at work, but for the first surgery with him she was... She never made a mistake, but during their surgeries she accidentally dumped steril surgical instruments... Blushing and week knees are a given 🙄, won't even mention it in detail.

I don' find it sexy or cute, when a decent woman behaves like a shy klutz overruled by estrogen...

She wasn't the worst case I read, and she was still cool (definitely better than the average h in CR), but her character had a huge potential to be much better!
There is still a possibility to write a human woman without embarrassing her!

he may be rude and a little bit of an asshole, but i dont think im worthy of Dr. Matthew Russell mainly because hes so passionate and dedicated to his job while im kind of a lazypants. he also scares me. but most importantly, hes decidedly made for Bailey.

story isnt groundbreaking, but the *kEy* is in the execution and the writing. stayed up all night so i could finish it in one sitting, and i have the panda eyes to prove it. wasnt a chore at all though, cuz i couldnt stop reading. now im contemplating watching Grey’s Anatomy.

BINGE READ ALERT, I REPEAT BINGE READ ALERT!!

Are you fed up with your reality problems?

Do you wish for a balm to your battered soul?

Do you seek escape in the form of paper and words?

If the answer is yes, then Hotshot Doc is perfect for you!

You don’t need to know much in order to dive in R.S. Grey’s latest rom-com. Only that there is a medical clinic. A pediatric spinal surgeon who is supposed to be the devil incarnate. A surgical assistant searching for a new boss. And a toe-curling, heartwarming and slow-burning romance laced with delicious tension and palpable chemistry.

Now let's talk about it, shall we?

Part 1, aka the sappy, you-can-hear-the-violins-playing-in-the-background part.

The past months have been a whirlwind workwise. I was (and still am) barely able to breathe, let alone read, so every time I returned home, I would put on my PJs, watch trashy TV shows and stay in the couch until I’d move to bed. Lather, rinse, repeat. I was so emotionally spent, tired to my very bones, that my brain refused to focus on anything. My soul ached for books to uplift me, to speak to me, to mend my wings that were in tatters, a product of anxiety and exhaustion. There were only a handful of authors who could startle me out of my stupor, and R.S. Grey is one of them. When Hotshot Doc hit my Kindle, however, it was met with trepidation. What if I was broken beyond repair? What if the hard slap of reality inflicted permanent damage to my love for reading? I should have known better than to question R.S. Grey’s healing abilities. Her words were like water to parched land. I inhaled them, I devoured them and I realized that after a very long time, I was content. And I can’t thank Rachel enough for that.

Part 2, aka the SOMEBODY CALL A DOCTOR, MATT GAVE ME HEART PALPITATIONS part.

The Queen of Rom-Coms strikes again, and it’s a lethal blow to the possibilities of ever finding someone who can be compared to her male characters. Dr. Matt Cooper is a soft teddy-bear hidden behind a cold, aloof fortress, but once you crack his walls, you’re irrevocably in love. Was he a jerk on numerous occasions? Sure. Was he unfair to Bailey? Yes. But the way he opened up, the way he fell head over heels that led to sweet gestures and SCORCHING encounters charred what was once my heart.

From the anticipation built for the first kiss to the explosion of glorious feelings when they were finally together, R.S. Grey, with her refined writing skills, crafted a romance that became one of my favorites. Bailey was a really endearing heroine, her devotion to her little sister was touching, and so was the way she crept in Matt’s cold heart. With the perfect blend of laughter, steam and all-encompassing feelings, she proved once more that rom-coms is her domain, and she rules it with an iron grip!

If you’re up for a romance reminding you of Grey’s Anatomy, with a surgeon that is the love child of McDreamy and McSteamy and a variety of fireworks that warm your insides, please don’t hesitate and grab a copy of Hotshot Doc!

*****FIVE STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

I’m shaking as if he has me on the edge of a cliff. One single finger could push me over. I’d tumble down, and right now, there’s no way to know what awaits me at the bottom. Pain, love, heartache, elation—each is as likely as the last and I can’t willingly do this to myself. I can’t give myself over to a man who has the power to upend my life so easily.

HOTSHOT DOC is yet another FIVE STAR READ by the amazingly talented R.S. Grey! Over the past few years, I have become one of her die-hard fans. If you’ve never read anything by this author, I highly recommend that you give her a chance. My heart is brimming with love for Matt and Bailey’s story. For those of you who enjoy a good ”enemies-to-lovers” romance, this is one that you need to add to your TBRs ASAP! A story that has an engaging plot, swoon-worthy Hero, and a Heroine who steals your heart, HOTSHOT DOC just became one of my top favorite books by R.S. Grey!

You can’t help but fall for Bailey. She’s sweet, silly, and has such a gentle soul. She has been the sole guardian of her fourteen-year-old sister for several years and there isn’t anything she wouldn’t do to make sure that Josie is healthy and happy, including putting her social life on hold. Truth be told, no one has really caught her eye until a certain “McDreamy” like doctor started working at her hospital. Dr. Matt Russell is every woman’s fantasy, but he’s notorious for his hot temper and for making most of his physician assistants quit because none of them can handle his verbal abuse and high standards. Bailey ends up becoming his latest victim when the doctor she’s worked with for the past four years retires and recommends Bailey to Dr. Russell, who happens to have just scared away his latest physician assistant.

Matt and Bailey don’t get off to the greatest start in the beginning, but there’s an instant chemistry that’s hard to deny between them. No matter how terrific Bailey is at being his PA, it doesn’t seem to curb his rude behavior towards her and it’s driving her insane because she wants so badly for him to like her and to receive validation from Matt that she's doing a kick-ass job. Once the truth behind his belligerent attitude is revealed things quickly heat up between Matt and Bailey.

Matt has many layers of sweetness buried underneath his cold exterior and the two quickly get swept up in a whirlwind romance. As with all stories, there’s something just around the corner waiting to burst the couples’ perfect bubble. Is their love strong enough to face the challenges ahead of them?

Here are my overall ratings:

Hero: 5
Heroine: 5
Plot: 5
Angst: 4
Steam: 4.5
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 5

Simply Amazing!!! The more I read from this talented author, the more I love, the more I can't wait for the next book.

It's hard to put in words how I feel for Matt & Bailey. They are beautiful, they are sweet, their love is undeniable. So here are a couple gif's that try to give you an idea of how much I loved this couple and this book.

This book had my attention from the start. I couldn't read fast enough, I just couldn't get enough. This author writes flawlessly. Definitely a recommend to all my romance lover friends out there!!!

I have been unlucky with her books this year. I'm not that into rom-com and she is famous for it. So color me surprised when I picked up HOTSHOT DOC and really enjoyed it.

But it shouldn't come as a surprise, because HOTSHOT DOC wasn't a real rom-com. It had some witty dialogues and Bailey and her sister's back and forth was certainly hilarious, but the comedic aspect didn't take over. Which made all the difference to me. And boy am I glad, because I love the office/boss trope and HOTSHOT DOC fit that bill splendidly.

So, for everyone who loves a great romance, some banter, but most of all a love story about a couple that doesn't fall in love IMMEDIATELY. Instead they worked their way to getting to know each other, and tried to figure each other out before jumping into bed. This book is for all of you!!

I really enjoyed Dr Russell's journey. Matt, was pretty much married to his job, and he didn't just change overnight, which I would have hated. Instead his and Bailey's work relationship slowly over time turned into more. And seeing him make those important steps was very endearing.

Bailey and her sister dominated some of my most favorite scenes. That teenage girl was the HOOT!!! The back and forth had me smiling like crazy, and I wasn't the only one who enjoyed it - Matt had a blast too!!

Of course the book had to have some kind of drama/conflict at the end, but I was pleasantly surprised by how the author decided to resolve it.

Either this book perfectly reflects my kind of humour or it’s universally funny because I laughed a lot. Whether it was between the love interests, the sisters or the doctors, it does really hit the mark comedy-wise.

I liked the FMC almost instantly (after the first page). She used the word ‘squad’ in the first few lines and I thought ‘Oh god this woman is going to be really cringe’. But she wasn’t and we did get along for the majority of the book. She was the primary guardian for her little sister, so she was young yet appeared older.

This was a dual POV, so we also got to hear from the arrogant, slightly d**chey, yet likeable MMC. In one of Matt's first lines he was surprised his surgical assistant quit after he ' only made him cry twice.’ This was a great intro to the character. He also introduced all the different medical specialities and related them to different kinds of people. Like Ferrari drivers to Plastic surgeons or masochists to Transplant surgeons.

Everything was infused with humour and ‘dumbed’ down for someone who has no understanding of anything medical (🙋‍♀️). The author doesn't try to overcomplicate things.

Grey's Anatomy was mentioned a lot, in a way that showed how loved it was by the FMC, but also mocked it by saying this wasn’t her reality. I think she was trying to set the precedent straight away that this wasn’t a Greys Rip off 🩺

This relationship was a slow burn, which I kind of understood, as she was apprehensive to lose her position. Saying that … Bailey was a tad hot and cold. She liked him and wanted to pursue him and then she would avoid him at all costs. I needed her to commit to one because it felt like we were going around in circles.

For me, it went from a 5⭐️ to a 3⭐️ somewhere around 70%. I started to lose a bit of interest. I don't know if it was the fact that as soon as they decided to be in a relationship there was no secret or mystery like I expected. The characters were just together and did ‘couple things’. The FMC also went from quirky and cute to a little bit erratic. She was this respected surgical assistant and then turned into this complete mess. I think the MMC’s affections made her insane.

It was very funny, but I think the relationships fell flat for me. I ended up finishing it and the epilogue was sweet, I think I just fell out of love with the last 30%.

Sidenote: Initially I didn't want to read this as the cover wasn’t my favourite. What is this man doing with his hand? I don’t get why you would have such a strong name related to medicine and then have normal people on the cover. I can't help but be judgey, but I am glad I gave it a chance.

What a pleasant surprise! I started this on a whim in the morning and here I am, a couple hours later, finished with the book and am in shock at how amazing it was.

Are you a fan of Josh Templeman from The Hating Game or Aaron Blackford from The Spanish Love Deception? If yes, THEN YOU NEED TO READ THIS ASAP!! If not, I still think you need to read this asap!!

✅ Sexy, brooding and misunderstood doctor?! Say no more 🥰

🆗 A little miscommunication but at least no pointless drama in the end. Instead there were actual adult situations that the characters had to work through in a realistic way

✅ The tension leading up to them being together was to die for. I mean I was on the edge of my seat just begging them to kiss 😍 And then when they did it was glorious!

✅ Perfect amount of steam and sexiness

✅ Last but most definitely not least we have Matt 🤤 I mean can a guy get more perfect that this? He was broody and moody, but such a softie at heart. Plus a doctor!

I read this entire book in one sitting. I was honestly surprised when I got to the end because how could I have finished it so quickly?! I just wanted to keep reading about these two love birds. I definitely recommend this if you loved books like The Hating Game and The Spanish Love Deception because I found this very similar… but honestly, it might be even better 😅

He needed an off switch...and she was it

THE PRESSURE!!!

I don't know if you know this, but I've stopped blogging. Yes, I'm still reading and reviewing because I can't seem don't want to stop myself. The blogging, even though I enjoyed getting my thoughts out into the world, started to feel TOO MUCH. My boys keep me busy and my work is busier too. When something that was supposed to be fun felt more like work and was costing me a lot of money, I knew things had to change. My priorities had to change. At this stage in my life, my priorities need to be bringing in money to make our lives better. I needed to spend my spare time making sure I look after me by eating healthy, exercising and getting out and doing things. Life is hard and way too short to be stressing about likes, reach and ARC's.

Even though my life issues are not life or death, I completely got Matt. Sometimes, you get into a habit of doing what is expected of you. You work yourself to the bone to make people happy even if it's at the detriment to yourself. There's even a little part of you that craves the accolades, the high-fives and fanfare when you get it right. Again, I can't really compare my blogging woes to a doctor who works his butt off to make lives better, but, I get it.

When I first met Matt, he was an absolute DOUCHEWAFFLE!! Then, as I got to know him, understood the pressure he put himself under, and his history with love, the douchewaffle title was downgraded to CRANKY BUGGER!! Yes, he still gets capitals because he was REALLY cranky. Like Bailey, the heroine of the story, I came to love him anyway. Poor Matt, he knew he pushed everyone away but he had to make a choice...fun or fixing kids to make their lives better. How could you hate a man for THAT???

Bailey's character isn't a slump in the old *sacrificing your happiness for others* group either. She is the sole carer of her younger sister and Bailey takes it very seriously. Her relationship with her sister is beautiful and I loved their friendship and connection. Bailey is a brave woman who knows that life can be hard but keeps on keeping on anyway.

I really enjoyed Hotshot Doc. I loved the characters, the story kept me entertained from start to finish and the connection between Matt and Bailey jumped off the pages. R.S. Grey is one of my favourite authors in the RomCom subgenre, and I look forward to every new release. I will definitely be reading more from her in the future.

R.S. Grey’s delivers another charming, sparkling and emotional involving contemporary romance with the tale of arrogant, cold-blooded, yet brilliant surgeon Dr. Russell and smart, strong, surgical assistant who’s about to tilt his world on its axis.
“No one has ever talked to me like Bailey did last night, not a colleague, not another attending at the hospital, and definitely not a surgical assistant.”

When Bailey’s boss decides to retire, she’s left with options: change specialties, or join Dr. McMeanie in the OR while simultaneously trying to tamp down her desire to kill and kiss the gorgeous, insufferable man. But with the way he stares at her, her feelings might be reciprocated.

While Bailey is doing her best to be a model employee and chip at Matt’s iron walls, the exasperatingly attractive and skilful man has been picking away at hers and soon their both in a relationship no one expected, but will Matt’s commitment to help one child at a time and Bailey’s need to take care of her 14 year old sister break them apart?

Grey creates a grin inducing enemies-to-lovers story that organically moves from romantic comedy to steamy and swoon worthy romance about two individuals who weren’t looking for love but found it in their impossible to ignore attraction.

Both Matt and Bailey are smart and witty characters you can’t help but fall in love with. Yes, Rachel tends to write cocky, jerk-ish heroes but they also have redeemable qualities and Matt’s steadfastness to help children with painful spinal conditions is just as admirable as Bailey’s dedication to taking care of her sister.

R.S. Grey’s books are a must read for me. They are hooking and entertaining and I love the balance between sexual tension, hilarity, banter and love in this case penned over a very well described medical environment which pulled me right into the OR as a witness to the romance.

Hotshot Doc is a full length contemporary romance by R.S. Grey. It is a standalone frienemies to lovers rom-com, told from both points of view with a happily ever after, no cliffhanger.

I thought this was an adorable story and found it very enjoyable. I liked both characters a lot and I thought with Matt that there was good character development. I did want to see a little more of him and Bailey together as a couple though. They had amazing sexual chemistry, which was great, but after about 50% of the book I think I just wanted to see how that chemistry would turn into a romance. Overall, a fun read and one I recommend.

Not bad but nothing extraordinary.

We are introduced to the h, who has no social life or love life as she sacrificed everything for her young sis. She is basically living a single mom life. Her young sis is obviously too eager for her to date and have a life. So here we have a sister (yes for a change we have a sister instead of a horny friend) who desperately wants the h to date and makes her wear uncomfortable clothes.

H is surgeon from hell (yes for a change we have a surgeon instead of a boss). And also no secretaries...oh...sorry...surgical assistants stay for long as he is too much of a terror to handle. So when one of a surgeon is retiring, he suggests that the H take his assistant.

Now the h already drools over the H but is not very keen on working with him as he is a hitler. But beggars can’t be choosers and here we go.

If you like when the heroine gets embarrassed in front of the H then you might enjoy this book even more. There are quite a few embarrassing moments for her.
I don’t know why authors like to embarrass the heroines. Is it something funny? The h’s stomach growls while an ongoing surgery and that too in front of the H and also that’s the first day of her job as the H’s surgical assistant. Amazing. What am I supposed to feel. Haha....how funny? The embarrassment she has to face that day was too much. Is it to get the H’s sympathy? Or should we pity the h?
And then the h begging for kiss in her dream while the H actually sees her puckering her lips in her sleep and all.

Other than these stupidities the book is good. It’s safe.

I was honestly nervous about this one since R. S. Grey’s last release was shockingly a DNF, which was totally on me. I am a big fan of this author, so I shouldn’t have been surprised when I ended up loving this one. Once again, the author pulled me into the story from the very beginning and I couldn’t read fast enough.

Gorgeous Dr. Matt Russell is the top doctor in his field, and although he is highly respected, he is definitely terrifying to work for. After sending so many surgical assistants running in tears from his operating room, he reluctantly gives Bailey Jennings a try, even though he is sure she will be running to.

Bailey Jennings is talented spitfire of a surgical assistant, and needs to find another surgeon to work for after her current boss told her that he is retiring. He suggest working for Dr. Russell, but there is no way she can work for him. So what if he is brilliant and she can learn so much from him. She also has a major crush on Dr. Russell, aka Dr. McDreamy. What happens when a formidable surgeon meets up with a spitfire of an assistant? Let me just say, Dr. Russell may be scary on the outside, but is all gooey on the inside.

Great fun read that I highly recommend!

HOTSHOT DOC

⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆ 4.25 Stars ⋆。˚☁˚。⋆.

“I’ll just say this…” She flips a page of her magazine and points down. “The harder the shell, the softer the heart.”

➽ tv. show rec - Grey's Anatomy✨(◕▿◕✿)

-ˏ͛⑅ The INTRO ⑅ˏ͛-

Huh, I guess I have read Hotshot Doc before (back in 2018 no less). . . well who would've know! I have to thank Arini for her short, but sweet, review of Hotshot Doc. Her fabulous review had me all kinds of intrigued, and tbh, I was really in the mood for a Grey's Anatomy type romance. So, did Hotshot Doc quench my thirst for all things McInsertSexyThingHere? Yes. . . and sorta no, but mostly yes. I know, what a shit answer, but trust me, all will become clear.

YES, yes I will include as many Grey's Anatomy gifs. in the review as possible✨

-ˏ͛⑅ The PLOT ⑅ˏ͛-

Twenty-six year old Bailey (I forget her last name) is a surgical assistant specializing in spines. She's raising her teenaged sister, and sure between her job and parenting role that leaves little time for a social life. She's fine with that, she's happy. Then her lead surgeon decides to retire, what's a surgical assistant to do without a surgeon to assist? Enter: Dr. Matt Russell. He's the Hotshot Doc of the Boston based hospital. He's notorious for making his surgical assistants quit. Basically, he's the living embodiment of a raincloud. What happens when a storm cloud meets sunshine?

-ˏ͛⑅ The GOOD ⑅ˏ͛-

DR. MATTHEW "MATT" RUSSELL ○*

I’m one part masochist, one part perfectionist. I have a little hero complex of my own and an ego that could fill this entire room, but it’s necessary.

Hands down the best thing about this book was the Hotshot Doc himself, Dr. Matt Russell. Not only was he our resident McDreamy (or McSteamy, whoever you prefer), but he also had a fabulous character arc.

Either that, or he went through a dramatic personality transplant. . . could be either or. For real though, your enjoyment of Hotshot Doc greatly hinges on how dreamy you find Matt. Personally, I love heroes like Matt, grumpy and serious on the outside, and warm and squishy on the inside.

“You’re kidding. A Prius?! Satan himself drives a Prius?!” She turns around as if hoping to find someone else she can share this moment with. All she’s got is me.
I shrug. “It gets good gas mileage.”

What made Matt such a standout hero, and character, was the many nuances and layers he had. At a glance you'd probably categorize him much like Bailey did -

You ARE brutal, and you know it. You can’t keep a good team around you because you stomp around like you’re the second coming of Christ.

Which, yes, he definitely does stomp around and act like he's the second coming of Christ, but he also cares deeply about his job. He takes it seriously, and pushes himself to be the best he can be. In his line of work being the best means he can change young children's lives. In Matt's world his job is the priority and he expects everyone to rise to his level.

He’s a man who fights for children who can’t fight for themselves, a man who donates his time and money not because he wants notoriety or appreciation but because something inside of him needs to do it. I’m not sure I’ve ever met a more selfless human.

However, what was probably most refreshing about Matt was the way he was with Bailey. At first, he was a grump, a jerk, and I think he made her cry. . . or at least contributed to making her cry. not a great look. Not gonna lie, things looked a bit bleak at first. See, as someone whose held a job I'm very pro-Bailey on this one. I like positive reinforcement and I don't enjoy being talked down to or yelled at, ESPECIALLY in front of my other co-workers. Now, I understand why Matt was so high-strung, I mean he's operating on tiny child sized spines, BUT STILL, hostile work environments are not the best. That's why I LOVED the way Matt truly absorbed Bailey's criticisms and actually LEARNED FROM THEM. That's the kind of character growth we love too see. It not only showed that he cared about Bailey, but it proved he's the kind of man who can learn from his mistakes.

THE ROMANCE ○*

I can’t remember the last time I had feelings for someone like this. It’s like I’m back in high school, like Bailey is the unattainable girl next door and I’m the nerd who can’t get her to agree to a date. I should just accept defeat.

Ah, the romance. The romance in Hotshot Doc was wonderful. Not only were Matt and Bailey downright adorable together, but they also had a great enemies-to-lovers vibes happening. One of the best parts about this romance was the fact that it was born out of a shared passion and mutual respect. As I've stated, Matt Russell lives and breaths medicine. It's something he's truly passionate about and in Bailey he meets someone who shares that passion. Bailey respects Matt as a man and as a Doctor.

We’re alone, scrubbing out side by side. I feel like I’m standing next to a celebrity. I tell myself to stop stealing glances at his forearms. They’re nothing special. I repeat: NOTHING SPECIAL.

Okay it also doesn't hurt that there's a mutual attraction, but still. . . . In addition, what made the romance so gosh-darn good was the way in which they fit together so well. Often times in romance we see a lot of couples who have to work extra extra hard, which is fine, but sometimes if you have to work THAT HARD to make the relationship work it might be DOA. In Hotshot Doc we got to see a romance that, while not easy, worked very well. Bailey and Matt could work alongside each other with no issues. They were both workaholics so there were no hurt feelings on that front, and they supported each others career aspirations wholeheartedly. Which, okay, I'm making their love sound super boring, but trust me it wasn't.

“Kiss me,” he pleads, his hands sliding around me, hauling me up against him so there’s no space left between us. “Bailey…kiss me.”

SISTERS BEFORE MISTERS ○*

“Josie, if you’ll excuse us, I need to have a word with your sister.”
“No she will not ex—”
Josie yanks her book back to her side of the table and starts to flip through it to find her page, unbothered by Matt’s grip on my arm. “You’re excused.”
Choosing Harry Potter over her own flesh and blood?! I would do the same, but how dare she?

One of the biggest surprises of this book, for me at least, was how much I loved the bond between Josie and Bailey. I typically don't like precocious teenagers in my "adult" romances. If the book is YA/NA then I'm fine with it, but if the book is dealing with people in their late twenties (and beyond) then I actively dislike the addition. I don't know maybe I'm still scarred by Molly from Hard Love, but I just don't like "all knowing teens" in my romance. The best part about Josie was how refreshingly like a teenager she acted. She didn't appear to be a grown adult trapped in a teenagers body. She didn't dispense amazing world weary knowledge to the h/H. Instead, she acted like a fourteen year old girl who was obsessed with Harry Potter. Her dynamic with Bailey was super sweet and they had a wonderful rapport. Also, I was living for her reactions to Dr. Matt Russell's hotness.

But…” She shakes her head. “No, that can’t be right, because I recognize you…” She tilts her head to the side, studying me intently before she gasps and her eyes widen with recognition. “You’re Dr. Russell! The hot doctor!”
“I’ll, um—”
“BAILEY YOU WERE MAKING OUT WITH THE HOT DOCTOR!” Josie shouts behind her.

Basically, my hypothetical-not-real sister is almost exactly like Josie, but alas, I only have a brother. . . Most of all what I loved about the relationship between Josie and Bailey was the way in which there was relatively no drama. Josie supported Bailey in everything she did. She enthusiastically cheered for her successes, encouraged her to have an attempt at a social life, and truly loved and appreciated her sister.

okay this gif. barely fits. . . just go with it.

It's obvious that Josie wasn't just added to have drama, instead R.S. Grey let her be an actual character with a dynamic personality.

THE PROGRESSION OF THE ROMANCE ○*

I literally thought Matt was proposing to me after like a week of dating. I’ve gone mad.

Now I remember why this book didn't stick around in my mind. . . First things first, I wanna stress this greatly, overall, I really liked this book. It was a really fun romance and I completely understand why this is regarded as one of R.S. Grey's best works. However, Hotshot Doc definitely falls victim to a trend that I've noticed in R.S. Grey's books. I think we can all agree that Ms. Grey always has the best plots and tropes in her books. It's obvious that she has the ideas to create great stories, but her track record on executing those ideas. . . ehhhh, not great. I'd say she did a pretty good job here, but I did notice a significant drop in the romance the minute Matt and Bailey got together. For example, their progression from enemies-to-lovers. One second Matt is saying this to Bailey -

"...You want me to pat your head and give you a gold star for doing your job. I won’t.” I pause briefly. “Grow up.”

And then all of sudden he's being cute and drunkenly offering Bailey flowers -

He picks it and offers it to me. “Here, please, a token of my gratitude.”
I yank the tiny white thing out of his hand, shove it in my pocket, and roll my eyes. “All right, fine. Thank you. Now c’mon, we’re almost there.”

HOW DID WE GET FROM POINT A TO POINT B? Please, someone explain. I get that they can't be "enemies" for the whole book cause that's no fun, but there has to be an in-between. Honestly, this is less a complaint about this book and more about enemies-to-lovers books in general. They always start out very strong and then you can see the point where the author wants to transition and then BOOM, love. I just wanted a gradual transition into that "lovey-dovey" stage and instead I felt like everything just started moving extremely fast.

BAILEY AND HER MISCOMMUNICATIONS ○*

We’re a perfect fit, and maybe I’m the last one to realize that. Maybe it’s time I tell him exactly how I feel.

You guys thought I wasn't going to talk about Bailey didn't you, come on admit it. There's a reason I didn't mention her earlier. Overall, I liked Bailey. She was an extremely fun character and I was really rooting for her. I loved the way she stood up to Dr. Russell, and I totally empathized with her struggles and insecurities. Basically, for about 60% of the book I was team Bailey, firmly standing in her corner. And then the last half of the book happened. . .

*deep world weary sigh*

Basically, Bailey forgets that she has a voice and can use it to air her emotions and misgivings. For example, one second she's ready to marry Dr. Russell -

OH MY GOD. WHOA. TOO SOON. BUT YES OKAY! I yanked that sucker out of there and whipped it open, a YES locked and loaded on my tongue right up until my eyes registered that there were not one but two twinkling diamonds nestled in the box, and they were attached to studs, not a band.

Which - okay, sure. Cut to a couple days later and she even refuses to discuss possibly going with him to the insert random country here for his doctor stuff. Like - HONEY, are you okay???

“This doesn’t have to be the end,” he says, hopeful. “This grant could be the start of something for both of us. Please think about it.”

Seriously, the whole last half of the book any communication they had just, ceased to exist. They basically broke up, but never actually said it out loud? Which. . . is just. . . an accomplishment. The whole drama at the end really soured my view on Bailey and I was insanely pissed on Matt's behalf.

-ˏ͛⑅ The OUTRO ⑅ˏ͛-

In summary, I am sooo glad I decided to reread Hotshot Doc. It was really nice to revisit a book I had previously read, but was pretty meh on. I'm very excited that I was able to bump up my rating. I'd say the best part about Hotshot Doc is the Hotshot Doc himself, Matt. He really made the book for me. Honestly, I think I need to become a surgical assistant. That way I can score me my very own Dr. Matt Russell. i kid, i kid. I'd say my only complaint with the book was Bailey's communication breakdown, and the way the book kinda starts to. . . meander after Bailey and Matt get together. However, despite those things, I still highly highly recommend Hotshot Doc !

5 Reasons Why I Love Hotshot Doc

1. A Lighthearted Story with a Grumpy AF hero and a Sassy AF heroine.
>> Bailey becomes the breadwinner of the family and a guardian to her younger sister, Josie when their parents were tragically died in an accident. She works as a surgical assistant at a hospital and the entire OR (Operating Room) Department commends her work. She's hardworking, competent and smart. When the surgeon she works with retires, she's endorsed to one of the best yet ruthless Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Matthew Russell.
>> Dr. Russell was known for being a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon. He's passionate and aggressively determined in treating children who are suffering scoliosis. However, his personality intimidates and scared off everyone. He's stoic, cold-hearted and grump as HECK. Bailey may have a crush on him and fantasizes them together as a pair but she will not tolerate his attitude.

2. Swoon-worthy & Comical Romance.
>> Truly this is one of the best romcoms I've ever read in quite a while. I had an amazing laugh (a real LAUGH OUT LOUD. My mom gave me a stare as if I'm some kind of lunatic) and I swoon over Bailey and Matt's romance! I'm in love with their chemistry. They're so frickin' natural. Both of them just blend together especially in the operating room. The embarrassing moments are so fun to read.

3. Josie Jennings
>> She's the bold, witty and candid younger sis. She is BATSHIT HILARIOUS and I love whenever she teases Bailey. There isn't a dull scene when she is in the picture. She reminds me so much of Kitty from To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han. I wish I have a sister like her so I can nag her. haha

4. Dr. Matthew Russell
>> HELLO? WHERE CAN I FIND SOMEONE LIKE HIM? He may have a tough nutshell that's almost impossible to crack, the guy has a soft spot and I fell in love with him. Gosh can I be Bailey for once? Damn this sexy, hot doctor.

5. BAILEY. FRICKIN'. JENNINGS.
>> Saved the best for last. She's got the sass, the looks, the intelligence...EVERYTHING. She's a ray of sunshine in the hospital and I would love to work and be friends with her. She's kindhearted and just as passionate as Matthew in what she does. I'm envious of her to be honest. What a lucky bish. <3

Overall, I love this book and I'm glad I buddy read this with dear Kat from Reading After Ten. We both enjoyed and swooned over it! If you are in the mood for RomCom, I recommend this one.

➼Medical romance
➼Perfect slowburn
➼TENSION
➼Great chemistry
➼Amazing heroine
➼Broody hero with a heart of gold

Very brief summary!
Bailey is a surgical assistant who's boss surprisingly decides to retire. No one wants to be Dr Matt Russell's surgical assistant because he is rude, arrogant and basically just a bit mean to his staff. Unfortunately, he is the only surgeon in Bailey's speciality (spinal surgery) who needs a new assistant and despite a bumpy start their chemistry is ✨electric✨ both in and out of theatre.

Bailey & Matt

➼Bailey - I loved Bailey so much. She sacrificed so much at a young age to look after her younger sister Josie after her parents passed away and throughout the book always goes the extra mile for her. I loved their sister relationship so much and it was such a great aspect of the story. Bailey was hilarious and although she tried to deny her attraction to Matt, there was obviously no doubt about what was going to happen. She was just such a perfect heroine and perfect for Matt in everyway.

➼Matthew AKA the new love of my life.

"We're not all famous spine surgeons with thick hair and the brooding personality of Mr Darcy."

Instant win

Ugh I loved Matt so much, obviously at first he comes across as super arrogant and a bit full of himself but he cares so much about each and every one of his patients and he really put his heart and soul into his job.

"He's a man who fights for children who can't fight for themselves, a man who donates his time and money not because he wants notoriety or appreciation but because something inside of him needs to do it. I'm not sure I've ever met a more selfless human."

description
@Matt

He has a hero-complex and wants to save every child that comes into the hospital and because of that he more or less always puts work before any social life or relationship - that is until he begins to feel strong emotions for Bailey and AHH I just loved reading his POV.

Romance
I loved the romance soo much. I was a bit worried about it being a hospital romance and this was also my first book by this author but it was honestly perfect for me and I loved every second of reading it. It was the perfect mix of slowburn and then a little bit of denial and then love ahhhh.

So basically to sum up, I absolutely enjoyed reading about these two amazing characters falling in love with each and can't wait to re-read this already lol!!

Thank you soooo much Cami for recommending me this, I am so grateful ♡

4 McDreamy Stars!

I knew within the first minutes of reading this book that I'm gonna be in a for fun ride. Hotshot Doc is simply a hilarious, quirky, and swoon-worthy book!

The book started off when Bailey Jennings became the new surgical assistant of pediatric spinal surgeon Dr. Matthew C. Russell. At first, their relationship was a RIOT. Matthew is known as an aggressive, rude surgeon in New England Medical Center and Bailey was pressured to work with him. She was a nervous wreck knowing that he has fired his previous surgical assistants because they can't handle his temper. But as soon as Bailey was able to pick up her stressful work and Matt's presence in the surgical field, it longer deterred her. She gained back her confidence and was able to challenge Matthew.

I have only watched a couple of episodes of Grey's Anatomy and somehow I was able to relate this book to the TV series. The back-and-forth silent banters and the undeniable sexual tension between Matthew and Bailey in the operating room were certainly fun to read.

I liked that the book was light-hearted just the way it was presented. There were a lot of scenes that made me laugh like an idiot. And gaaah!!! I totally swooned over Matt! He's basically one of those perfect male characters who's rough on the outside but sweet on the inside.

description

The story was well-done. I loved that it sat something in motion from enemy to friendship to lovers vibes and in the end it all worked out for them. I just thought that maybe... just a little, their romantic development went faster than I expected. I expected more conflicts between these two characters, and perhaps more banters. It would really make the book a lot more perfect!

I noticed that the writing style of R.S. Grey improved a lot in this book. I've read her previous books like Scoring Wilder and A Place in the Sun but I wasn't wowed like I am in this book. I especially loved Bailey and Matt's respective POVs and how they were so engaging and very entertaining.

You won't regret reading this book if you want to have some feel-good reads. I would very much read another R.S. Grey book soon!

Wow! Just wow! This was seriously one of the most fun books I've read this year! Once I started I just could not put it down and I enjoyed every single page.

Dr. Matthew Russell aka Hotty McHotpants is ALL MINE! Yes I'm absolutely claiming him! He is a pediatric spinal surgeon, the top of his field and a god in the O.R. The only problem is that he is a bit of an asshole, he's not afraid to make people cry and he is definitely not getting any Mr Sensitive awards. His surgical assistants don't last very long becasue no one can tolerate working with him. Unfortunately for our heroine Bailey, she just got that job.

Bailey has got to be one of my favorite heroines. Her witty humor had me constantly cracking up throughout this book. She had a spine of steel and she never cowered in front of Matt like everyone else. She called him out on his BS and he actually loved that about her. She was also such a selfless character who sacrificed so much to take of her sister.

Bailey brings out the best in Matt. I loved how committed he was to his patients but he starts to realize there is more to life than the hospital and with Bailey, he starts to want more. These two together were SO SWEET and SO SEXY! I love romance stories like this just have me smiling like a damn fool throughout the whole book.

I have to give the author credit for ensuring accuracy of details as it pertains to the procedures in the O.R. As someone who works in the medical field, I am always hesitant to read medical based romance books because more often than not the medical scenes are innacurate. R.S. Grey obviously did her research and I appreciate the authenticity of the medical aspects of this book so so much!

I highly recommend this one! Full of laugh out loud, sexy and heartfelt moments! It will make you feel warm and fuzzy and hot and bothered all at the same time. This is FEEL GOOD romance at its best!

I really enjoyed this story, from first to last (though it has some minor problems). Bailey drew me in immediately and that was enough engagement to begin with. Matt was a tougher sell because his reputation was so awful and we see his impatience. It didn't take long to see that a lot of his reputation was built from reactions against his exacting standards and I kind of liked that he consistently demands the best from his team. Yeah, it sucks when he tells Bailey that he doesn't want to be her friend (he just wants her to be competent at her job) but I really liked how she took him at his word (and took her banana bread with her) and how it made him realize that his bare-bones demand had its cost, too.

And I liked seeing her gradual understanding that his compassion was channeled into his work and that was why he demanded the best of his team, including himself. I enjoyed the relationship progression from there. Yes, a lot of it is Bailey getting to know what makes him tick and coming to understand the underlying compassion. But I liked that it was also Matt learning to find joy in his life outside of his job as well, with Bailey (and Josie, her sister) as his guide. I loved seeing him come to understand her importance to him in ways he hadn't considered important before and I loved that he took her seriously when she gave him limits and push back.

My only real drawback is that so much of Bailey's romantic motivation is negative*. She takes steps to understand that her job isn't on the line if she falls for him. And she's not really worried about the impact on Josie or even herself should she let herself fall for Matt. So her resistance is pretty much straight-up fear and anxiety and I resented how that managed to slow the plot to a crawl on a couple of occasions with the only barrier becoming how long it would take her to change her mind.

So this ends at a wobbly four stars for the humor and for liking both leads. And for Grey managing to make the work environment feel real and present in a way that few romances with doctors ever manage.

A note about Steamy: There are three or so explicit sex scenes putting this in the middle of my steam tolerance. They were okay, but the real relationship axis was emotional intimacy so the sex was mostly a side-show (though one that was handled reasonably well).

* Negative Motivations: I kind of hate that the term "negative motivation" isn't widespread, yet. Since it isn't, I'm going to save off this little jag to append to my reviews that feature the term. Jennifer Crusie blogged about it a bit back and it changed how I understand story. The problem with the term is that if you've never heard it before, you'd assume it meant motivations that are harmful or immoral. Not so. What it refers to is motivations not to do something. The thing is that many of us are motivated to not do things for a lot of different, perfectly valid and reasonable, reasons. The problem is that in a story motivations to not do things are a huge drag on the plot—particularly considering the fact that most negative motivations are overcome by the character simply deciding they don't care any more (or, rather, that they do care and are now motivated to do the thing). So not only do you have a counter to action but you also have a situation where to overcome it, all a character has to do is change their mind. Which means eventually, the reader is rooting for the character to get over him/herself already and do the thing we want them to do. Conflict drives story. Conflict between a reader and a main character drives readers away from story.

I love R.S Grey. Her books are always so fun and enjoyable to read. I loved this one, loved the characters. I love the writing style of her books and I also manage to read them pretty quickly.

Alot of laugh out loud and romance in this book. I thought Bailey was a great character, shes a bit sensitive and emotional at times but I really loved her character :)

I would liked a bit more of Matt's family in this book or a more longer epilogue. But yeah cute book :)
