I grew up on the south side of Chicago and in a very busy weekend, got married, graduated college and moved to Los Angeles.

Although my degree is in Fine Arts, all I ever wanted to be was a writer and I've been doing it in one form or another for as long as I can remember. My shining moments in elementary and high school always involved stories or poetry I'd written. I wrote news stories and a weekly column in my college newspaper. My first job out of college was working on the newsletter of a finance company. I worked for a public relations firm and wrote press releases and biographies. Later I wrote proposals for video projects and television shows that went through various stages of development.

I tried writing screenplays and wrote three. I sold one and another was a winner in a Writers' Digest contest.

I was lucky enough to be a stay-at-home mom and did all kinds of volunteering at my son's schools including editing and writing several newsletters.

I wrote essays and small pieces that ran in the Los Angeles Times, the Daily News and Woman's Day among others. My short romantic and mystery fiction appeared in Woman's World, and Futures magazine.

From time I was a thirteen-year-old babysitter cooking for the kids I babysat, I dreamed of writing a book about babysitting. It took a little longer than I'd expected, but BLUE SCHWARTZ AND NEFERTITI'S NECKLACE was published in 2006.

My affair with crochet began in Las Vegas. I had always had a fascination with crochet, particularly granny squares, but thought there was some magic involved with making them that was beyond me. And then everything changed that day in Vegas when I saw the kids' kit in FAO Schwartz. If the instructions were easy enough for kids, I thought they might work for me.

My first granny square was missing a corner, but when I tried again, all four corners were there. I was in awe of my own accomplishment. I had found the magic. I went granny square crazy until pretty soon I didn't need directions anymore. Then I learned there were more squares than just basic grannies and I made squares with sunflowers in the middle and other patterns. I moved beyond squares and made flowers, hearts, bookmarks and more.

I was in love with crochet and began to make scarves, purses, afghans, and shawls. I started carrying my hooks everywhere. A plane trip became a pile of granny square wash cloths, or part of a shawl. A vacation in Hawaii turned into a tote bag.

And now I get to write about it...

A cute cozy mystery but not my favorite in this series. Casey is not herself in this book. Personally, I thought the retreat was going on forever. I was beginning to think it would never end. There are a number of characters and the majority of them are unlikeable. The mystery can easily be solved before the murder. The book is easy to read thanks to the author's conversational writing style.

This series just keeps getting better and better! Casey is put in the position of putting on a retreat for some old college friends that has her scrambling to cover up what a hodgepodge her life is compared to how "together" her old mates seem to be, but things go completely off the rails when one of the old pals is found dead! Once again Casey is on the case! I absolutely can't wait to see what happens in the next book as things are heating up on several personal fronts for Casey and several of the other characters. FYI: So far the entire series has been available via audiobook!

Casey runs into a few difficulties when she plans a yarn retreat for some of her college classmates. Old grudges emerge as the group interacts, and everything goes downhill when one of them dies. Secrets abound and slowly come to light as Casey persues the person responsible. Astute readers will likely zero in on the killer before Casey does, but the mystery is still a good one. The continuing characters and the furthering of secondary plot lines add to enjoyment of the series.

Inherit the Wool A Yarn Retreat Mystery, #6 by Betty Hechtman
Excited to be reading a new author to me and the subject contains knitting.
She calls her friend Frank and he fears there's another murder as many have occurred since she moved to Cadbury by the Sea in CA.
Feldstein is putting on a yarn retreat reunion. The sorority from college will be coming, all people she knows, The Ballerinas.
She had tried a lot of different jobs and really liked it but there was no money to run the company.
Her aunt Joan had died and left everything with her.... Love how each get to introduce themselves to one another again and especially love the routine with the balls they do.
A murder attempt happens and Carrie is the one who collects the clues and tries to solve the mystery.
After the attempts and the women know they want to leave the area but Carrie has some ideas on how to keep them there-because one of them could be the culprit.
When pigs fly, LOL. I have seen them in TN. love how it fits into this book. Like how the local cop is also investigating from his angle, not his normal at all!
Love that she's a baker! Wow I missed so many clues in the story, had no clue who the culprit was.
Like hearing of the magic tricks, so cool! Love knit patterns for the scarf attached at the end.
And recipe for muffins! Other works and about the author are included at the end.
Really enjoyed this book can't wait to read more.
Received this review copy from Beyond the Page Publishing via Netgalley and this is my honest opinion.

Even though I don't knit and haven't crocheted in decades, I enjoy this series. I like the idea of a rustic lodge in an almost weather-perfect setting, as well as the way Casey is making a go of the yarn retreat business left to her by her aunt. I wish this book included photos of the project they were working on, because I couldn't visualize how using three yarns at the same time would be an easy project for absolute beginners.

Nearly everyone in the retreat group had reasons to want the murder victim dead, so there were quite a few viable suspects at first. As names were crossed off that list, though, I started to suspect one character over all the others, which turned out to be correct. The motive made sense, given that person.

I look forward to reading the next book in the series to see what happens at Casey's next retreat - and to learn if the detective continues his yoga routine :)

This is definitely my favorite book in this series so far! It followed the same formula as the others but tossed in a few different elements that just gave it more depth. The characters were great, as always, and the ending made me all giddy!

Can't wait to listen to the next one! Love Margaret Strom as a narrator!!

The premise is interesting but how she solves it is a little silly, because that's not how muscle memory works.

This was a nice little escape. Casey has several jobs, one is running craft retreats; the second is baking for the coffee shops and a restaurant, in town; and the third job is acting as an aide to her ex-boyfriend and his magic show. She's been contacted by some old college friends who want to get together for a little reunion and want her to host a retreat. She's worried what they will think of her life as she thinks they are all successful and accomplished women.

Surprise! Little cracks in their facades are beginning to show. And then it happens, one of them is murdered. Casey decides she must figure out what happened.

This is a fun story and was a nice little escape. Casey is a nice character and several of her friends around town are likable. However, the story didn't keep me glued to the page. The writing style is easy-to-read, but there are lots of characters. I also , that might be figured out who the murderer was before the big reveal.

I like cozies and this fit the bill. Maybe part of my problem was that I hadn't read any of the previous books and that might be my problem. I might try another one in the series and see if it grabs me.

Thanks to NetGalley who supplied the book in exchange for my honest review.

Inherit the Wool, by Betty Hechtmann, has all the ingredients of a cozy murder mystery. The main character is a single woman who is a wanna-be detective, the setting is a lovely rustic inn near the Pacific coast but isolated enough not to have cell phone service, a love interest or two, a plethora minor characters to love or hate, a plot following the tried and true outline yet there is still something missing in the story arc.

Hechtmannn is to be commended for developing a series that permits one not to have to read the books in the series. Inherit the Wool makes a fine stand alone story, and quickly captures the reader up with major plot devices that may have occurred in previous books. Although Hechtmann has her main character running around like a chicken with her head cut off it appears that she has misjudged the intelligence of her audience. The main clue is just too obvious, as are the red herrings. Likewise her sense of time is poor, we all know exactly how long it takes to do things and know there are only 24 hours in a day! She has cleverly left her main character with enough unresolved personal issues that a sequel may be inevitable.

An light, but easily forgettable, book; and sometimes that is just what you need.

I always want to take up my knitting needles after reading one of Betty Hechtman's Yarn Retreat mysteries and Inherit the Wool is no exception. The author has created a strong plot with plenty of misdirection, and although I deduced part of the solution, part of it did elude me.

I do have to admit that I found this book a bit harder to get into than previous installments because of the reunion setting. This has nothing to do with the author's writing and everything to do with my personal experiences with old classmates and reunions. If I were the main character, there would be no Inherit the Wool because I wouldn't have agreed to host the retreat for those women in the first place. (Yes, in this instance I am a killjoy.)

Personal feelings aside, the reunion plot line is well written and shows readers a part of Casey's past that they hadn't seen before, and the resolution is satisfying. Whether or not you like to knit, Inherit the Wool is a very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. If you haven't given this series a try, I do recommend it. Now... where's that knitting project of mine?

Casey's run a bunch of retreats now, but never one filled with people she knows. This time, though, her friends from college gather for a yarn retreat, and Casey has to juggle spending time with her friends, and actually doing her jobs. And then one of them winds up dead, and her head is in the chopping block!

This one was good. The plotting of the murder was great, and the details of the how and why make so much sense. Though Casey really is a magnet for murder in that weird way cozy mysterious characters are.

I'm starting to have one problem with this series, though. It's getting a bit wearing to get to the end of the book, and while the overarching plot lines of the series get a few mentions throughout, with Casey fretting about them, they get a single decent plot update on the last page of the book, and then the next book starts with a minor recap of what's happened outside of the book with major updates on those plots, but nothing happening DURING the timberline of the book itself. There's a lot of tell not show on the heirs to Vista Del Mar storyline, AND the Casey Gets A Boyfriend storyline.

This can be read as a standalone story. I am a fan of this series.

I like the not so secure Casey, her friend Lucinda and the Detective Theo Borgine. I’m not a fan of the inn manager, Kevin.

The California seaside is the backdrop to this captivating cozy. Near Monterey CA.
I am familiar with this area and enjoy the Backdrop descriptions, especially 17 mile drive.

I liked that we learned more about Casey and Lucinda. Casey’s school mates come to a retreat. One dies and the search is on for the killer.

I didn’t care for Elizabeth, she seems like another lost soul that can’t enjoy the life she has. She needs to relax and enjoy life. Things will fall into place if she lets it. I’m not against ambition but live a little instead of envious of what others appear to have.

I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy from Beyond The Page publishing via Netgalley and these are my own opinions.

I now have a new series to catch up on! Inherit the Wool is the 6th title in the Yarn Retreat Mystery series. Casey lives in picturesque Cadbury on the California coast and cobbles together a living by hosting knitting retreats, baking muffins and desserts for local coffee shops and restaurants, and even being a magician’s assistant. She also is a successful amateur sleuth. Casey agrees to host a group of her old college friends for a retreat, but things don’t go smoothly. She’s nervous because everyone else seems so accomplished and settled, but cracks appear in her friends supposedly successful lives. When one old friend dies during the retreat, Casey starts snooping and finds out the victim used friends for her own ends. I loved the fact that all the visitors are horrified to find the hotel has no WiFi or cell phone service on its grounds. The knitting scenes made me want to get back to my current work in progress!

Casey Feldstein inherited the yarn retreat business from her aunt. Now some of the women she knew from college have contacted her and requested they do a retreat as a reunion after many years of connecting only through annual Christmas cards. Casey feels that her lifestyle will sound boring to the others and that she has nothing to show for all her thirty-some years - like a husband or children or a career. What Casey does is to bake muffins and desserts for local restaurants, work as a magician's assistant, solve murder cases, as well as hosting yarn retreats.
This is the first book I have read in the Yarn Retreat Mystery series and it will be the last. The story was entertaining, but so many things were just unbelievable. I enjoy reading fiction as long as I can buy into the plot, characters and setting. This was just implausable in so many ways.

This is book 6 in the Yarn Retreat Mystery series. This is a popular theme in cozy books today where crafters go on vacation to learn to reinforce their skills. This story has Casey hosting a knitting retreat for her college friends most of whom she hasn't seen in years. There is one mystery guest that turns out to be Casey's college crush. Casey is nervous because she worries all the others will be rich and big shots in their careers. Turns out she is the one who is envied by the group. A good murder mystery to solve along with Casey and her buddies including Detective Borgnine who is getting to be a more regular character. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I skipped several books in the series, but I didn't miss so much that the book was confusing. The author briefly explained the few important incidents I'd missed. I want to like this series more than I do. The police seemed to be really inept in this one. The main character suspects somebody was drugged through her wine, so she is reckless enough to take a taste to see if she can detect it and promptly passes out after throwing up on herself????? Then her policeman boyfriend takes her home and tells her to take a shower and doesn't bag her clothes and take a sample of the upchuck to be tested????? And the whole ruse about teaching meditation was ridiculous! The identity of the killer was so obvious from the moment she first appeared.

There's a few more books left in this series, but I won't be finishing it. I began reading Betty Hechtman as the author of a crochet cozy mystery series, and I fell in love with those books, and am, in fact, waiting to read the final book of that series. I also read her much smaller, thankfully, writing mystery series. I enjoyed these knitting mysteries somewhat, until the fifth of this series, when she decided it was suddenly necessary to insert foul language. There's absolutely nothing about foul language that strengthens a story, and as a writer, especially an educated one, the author should know that. As a Christian, I am
selective about what I read. Sometimes, I can read secular authors because they write clean. Now, that selection of authors has decreased by one.

In Book 6, the presence of the main character's mother is really reduced, and I'm glad there is less meddling in this relationship. There were a couple of fun twists toward the end with a fun reveal of a crucial piece of evidence. The author still replies on the same descriptions of characters, down to carrying a purse "Queen Elizabeth style", which has never been explained, or the main character's best friend wearing Eileen Fisher clothing. I'm really surprised I've made it through to book 6 as the same tropes are used in every book, but it is hard to find fiction that has good knitting content! I do appreciate the description of the retreats and the knitting portions, though that has lessened as the series moves along.

Another yarn retreat. This time with old college "friends" of Casey. The 4 women were in a PE class together and members of the Ballerinas - a game played with rubber balls just smaller than a basketball and more appropriate for middle schoolers. When one of them women is found dead after a false bomb scare, trying to keep things together was difficult. Of course, Casey gets involved and does some snooping on her own. I am a former knitter so knew what the lingo was about. I find Dr. Sammy annoying, Kevin a pompous a**, and wonder just when they will let Cora and Madeline know about their brother's love child. The stink fish is getting really old.

When Casey decides to have a "retreat" with her old "ball girl" friends. She's hoping that knitting will bring them all back together. However, you never can go back in time. When a body is found Casey must hurry to find out what happened.

Good story... kind of depressing tho. I only say that cause the reminder that you grow apart from friends you definitely can't go back to the good old days. It almost seemed that other then the ball girls thing they really weren't all that close way back when... Always interesting to see a bit more into the past of the main character. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Enjoyable read.
Our main character runs a yarn retreat to help people relax, but when her old classmates decide to get together in one of her own organized retreats, all comes unhinged.
The characters are well crafted and suitable in their difference. A spinster, a lawyer, a social worker, a rich heiress, a reporter, and a no-show for the event.
When one of them dies unexpectedly, the police think about foul-play and start the most unconventional investigation.

Note: I received an ARC for review and an honest and unbiased opinion.

A logical murder mystery populated by quirky illogical characters, most of whom are trying a bit too hard to show how successful they have become in the fourteen years since they were at college together. Take these folks, subtract the murder victim, add in some local characters and cops, finish up with a magic act,and you have a mystery as complex as a knitting pattern. A good read!

Inherit the Wool by Betty Hechtman is this first I've read in the series.
I'm a fan of the author, so this book peaked my interest.
The story was well written and I immediately connected with the characters.
I'm planning on reading the other books in the series so I can catch up on these wonderful characters.

Casey's holding a yarn retreat for a group of her college friends when . . . you guessed it . . . one of them gets murdered at Vista Del Mar.

Her relationship with all of the suspects gets in the way of solving the crime. It doesn't help that she convinces the police lieutenant to keep his investigation of the murder on the down low. Eventually, it works out, though.

Light and frothy, this is one of those quick little reads that entertains without being too cerebral.

Casey agrees to run a knitting retreat for her college friends but she is not sure it is such a great idea. They all seem to put together and accomplished, while she is still trying to decide what she wants to do with her life. But maybe they are not as well established as they pretend. When one of them dies they all learn that maybe life is not perfect and they need to admit that they have made mistakes. But why did the young, seemingly healthy, woman die? Heart attack? Or something else.
