Winning might be impossible, but damned if I won’t try.

Against all odds, I’ve won the chance to represent my academy at the Intermagic Games. Teams from all over the world will compete.

But it’s not just the prize I’m after--I’m going undercover to stop two ancient evil monsters. They’ve infiltrated the games, and if they get their claws on the prize first, all hell will break loose.

When I’m paired up with the irresistibly sexy gladiator Maximus, it will take all my skill to keep my eye on the goal. And I have to do it while keeping my dark magic under wraps. Because if the judges realize what I really am, it’s a one way trip to the Prison for Magical Miscreants.

Hunt for Magic is a fast-paced urban fantasy adventure starring a kick butt heroine, a powerful hero, and magic that will rock your world.

Before becoming a writer, Linsey was an archaeologist who studied shipwrecks in all kinds of water, from the tropics to muddy rivers (and she has a distinct preference for one over the other). After a decade of tromping around in search of old bits of stuff, she settled down to start penning her own adventure novels and is freaking delighted that people seem to like them. Since life is better with a little (or a lot of) magic, she writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

I really like the main characters Rowen and Maximus. This book is only the second I have read in this series as I had not known there were others but it didn't matter. I will go read them too. I highly recommend this series .

If you've read one...

of my reviews from this series... Yeah, you know the saying. I have the same praise for the action and pacing and the same, tiring beef with the *TWO* editors and with Hall's heavy reliance on her painfully obvious formula that she's used for all 3 sisters' series now.

It's Halloween which is release day for the second book featuring Rowan and Maximus and I do think the author was inspired by this release date. We have Rowan still worried about anyone finding out she has dark magic apparently festering inside her and then there's her slowly emerging new Dragon God powers. Add in a couple of creepy Witches that keep popping up and its enough to make anyone's hair fall out ! Still with a supernatural treasure hunt to compete in Rowan needs to get a handle on her powers pretty quickly before the ministry start asking too many questions .
Ok I said the author clearly took ideas from when this book is released and she sure has had fun running with that idea. We get haunted houses complete with ghosts, witches, a mummy and even Dracula popping up ( quite literally from a coffin !) . Not to mention a nod to a particularly famous fictional sleuth complete with well I'll let that be a surprise. Now walk down any street at Halloween and not everyone wants to be a monster so of course Rowan simply has to go to the ball and spot those elusive glass slippers !
This was fun to read but what I think I really liked was seeing the very human side of Rowan. Yes she's up against it with other competitors in the race but she always stops to help anyone who needs help. She has a big heart and doesn't ever let anyone down if she can help it. Rowan might have suffered herself but she's survived to become resourceful and oh so caring. I'm really enjoying seeing her character develop and I can't wait to see what mayhem befalls her next.
This voluntary take is of an advance copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair.

more stupid things in this book (and series):
- The game was held by the Order of Magic, and the contestant was powerful supernatural who was not common, basically the order's target (because they hated outlier). And I thought the UP was a secret organization? now they were exposed to the Order then? what the fuck indeed.
- if she admitted that Sherlock Holmes wasn't real, how did she conjure the fckin ghost?
- why didn't the Order use the Truth Teller themself if they were so eager to catch uncommon magic?

It was another flag capture game but unlike ana, this time Rowan won the game after she took a shortcut through medieval toilet chute. they were celebrating her victory in W&W when Max came and told them that they found a clue of the witches whereabouts. they said the witch would infiltrate the Intermagic Games because they wanted to get the price, a Truth Teller so he recruited Rowan to join him as his partner in the game and it started the next day. The opening ceremony was held somewhere in Paris and after some brief introductory of the contestant (4 pairs of them) and magic showed off, they were immediately thrown into the game. They were assigned to find the ghost in the attic in a literal haunted house. First, an old crazy witch chased them off, then they were chased by the hound of baskervilles, rescued THE Dracula, and met the ghost of Sherlock Holmes who told them to steal the Headless Horseman's stallion in order to cross the bridge and reach the attic.

They managed to avoid the flaming jack-o'-lantern that the headless dude threw at them and stole his horse and crossed the bridge but then, they arrived to a maze of bridges and being chased by the hound. Rowan pulled some trick with water from the river below (?) and arrived to the attic to meet with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself. He said two witches with purple eyes (the bad dudes) already grabbed the map 20 minutes ago and before he could talk about anything else, the old miserable witch came. Sir Arthur and Menacing Menagerie distracted the witch but they were chased by the hound again and this time, the two wolf shifters also did.

They managed to went out of the house but immediately being suffocated by pumpkin vines. But at that moment, Rowan got new magic that could steal the plant's life force and killed it. They managed to escape to Max's house in the supernatural district somewhere in London and somehow, the wolves couldn't follow them (when it was the main character's turn to follow bad guys through transport charm, they could... this universe is stupid, but hey, it was the characters' universe, so it made sense). They opened the map, found an envelope with an invitation to Cinderella's royal ball somewhere in the same district as Max's house (isn't Cinderella from French? this book get dumber and dumber in every page) and the next clue was in her glass shoe.

Rowas was stressed out because she got another magic that brought dead (stupid) but Max tried to convince her that death was natural and she should practice her magic (of course she was unwilling -_- reading idiot characters are tiring) and when she did, the magic quickly killed the plan she was practicing on. When they almost kissed, representative from the Order came, asking them about the dead vines. Rowan's excuse was that she used some kind of potion for it but the annoying jerks didn't believe it, so she had to make it and give the sample to him by the end of the tournament. Rowan told her sisters what happened and rest for the night.

She woke up to find her sisters (just barged in to someone else' house) and gave her a makeover and a fancy dress that was swift enough to fight in. They all went to the ball, Ana and Bree to find the witches with their boyfriends while Rowan and Max find the next clue. At first, they thought they saw her entering some room but it turned out to be an ambushed by three other pairs of contestant. They fought but managed to overpowered them (6 vs 2 of very powerful magic users, but the two won. logical) and with close to no injuries too! The fae managed to stunt some butler and Ana's arm but Max was perfectly fine, and not a drop of blood on him.

They helped the stunted butler and in exchange, he told them where was cinderella. On their way to find her, they met with the evil stepsister, but they turned out to be the witches in disguise. Rowan told her sisters about the witches and she distracted them until they arrived and when they did, Rowan and Max looked for Cinderella. They found her but so did the wolf shifters. Max distracted them and at that moment, midnight came. Cinderella ran away, Rowan stunned the prince, took Cinderella's shoe, found the clue, and she was just handed it over to the prince when the other competitors came.

The prince fought to defend the shoe and Max came at that time, conjuring more similar ones and the others took the bait, allowing them and the prince to escape. However, Bree and Ana lost the witches so they returned back home. In protectorate, Hedy, Connor, and Lachlan was working on the potion to save Rowan's ass, but it didn't do so well and Hedy ordered Rowan to rest, but suddenly, Max came and they made out. But before things went too far, Ana came, asking for her hair and told them to rest for the final day tomorrow.

The next day, the clue took them to Croatia, slightly ahead the others. They were tasked to defend a hot air balloon until it reached the destination and they were immediately attacked by winged snakes. Suddenly, the witches came in bird form but they protected them from the snakes. There was too many snakes but it was all good and fine because Rowan got another power to control clouds and storms and it even engulfed the witches, giving them safe (relatively) passage straight to the Colosseum. They got off the balloon and were told to went straight to the arena.

Underneath the Colosseum, they almost died when the ceiling fell but of course Max could hold it up. They arrived to the arena to find one of the illusionist being one out of four demon's plaything. The passage to the truth teller in the middle of the arena was safe but of course she had to save the illusionist first. When other competitors came, they agreed to help each other killing the demons monster and after they all died, they sprinted to the egg. Rowan got it but the bird witches immediately swooped in and kidnapped her. She woke up somewhere in a dungeon without the truth teller but her sisters and Max were out looking for her. She managed to broke out before her sister arrived and immediately went for a temple nearby, where the witches would definitely be there.

But of course they had to face some challenges again, dirt wolves, minotaurs (yes, plural. idiot, i know), and hydra. The witches (who confessed to be Stryx) attacked them but apparently, the witches already got what they wanted from the truth teller so they let go of it easily and they managed to retrieve it and took it back to the protectorate. Jude let them use the Truth Teller (after some recharge) and Hermes came, giving her a scroll saying that she was Greek Dragon God and she got the power of Zeus (what about Poseidon and Hades, dumbass?). Also, the Order's representative came, asking for the potion, but of course her friends managed to finish it on time and could give it to them, so she was off the hook.

I won’t say the second book in the Amazon series wasn’t enjoyable, because it was. Lots of action and the characters are highly likable that you want to cheer for. That said I did have some issues with this story.
First and this isn’t unique to this book, the story opens with our heroine Rowan competing in a training exercise equivalent to a deadly game of capture the flag. Since the Protectorate employs demons as one of the potential obstacles to overcome, there’s a chance a demon could kill one of the trainees. This is explained as, “well we’re all adults and if we can’t survive the training exercise we’re probably not good enough to be agents of the Protectorate.” What ethical organization puts the lives of their trainees at risk in order to have them prove themselves?
Second the story is built around the idea that several magical academies will compete for a special prize in deadly games that are held every five years. I could be wrong but wasn’t this the basis of one of the Harry Potter books? The whole thing felt like a combination of Harry Potter and the Hunger Games. Perhaps after twenty-six books in this series Ms. Hall is having difficulty coming up with original ideas?
Third, the part of the contest that involved the haunted house, really? All the evil characters were so tongue in cheek silly it was hard to take the danger part of that contest seriously.
Fourth, the ball where Cinderella meets her Prince and loses her glass slipper. Here we go back into Fairytale Land again. It’s as if the author can’t decide which audience/age group she’s writing for because later in the story our heroine and hero drop a couple of F-bombs. This is the first time that I can recall in this series where the language has gotten more than a PG rated shit or ass. I don’t have a problem with the language when it fits the scene and it definitely did here. But somehow the idea of having a story where Cinderella appears and the main characters are using F-bombs just doesn’t mix well.
Fifth and lastly, Rowan uses a new magic where she literally sucks the life out of some vines that are killing her and Maximus. So of course the Order of Magica steps in immediately wanting an explanation and for Rowan to prove she doesn’t have the ability to drain the life from something. They’re like a dog with a bone. I hope by the time this story is over the Firesouls, the Protectorate with the three dragongod Blackwood sisters all stand up to the overly officious old fools who run the Order and tell them to shove it or they’ll band together and get rid of them. After all between the Firesouls and the Blackwood sisters and their male partners you have twelve magicals with the powers of gods. More than enough power to overthrow the corrupt and inept Order of Magica which tries to imprison every magical being with powers they don’t understand or are afraid of.

Hunt for Magic Dragons Gift The Amazon Book 2

Linsey Hall

Second book in the series opens with Rowan on rooftop racing to get ahead of her fellow classmates in the Academy of Magic. Rowan feels she is at a disadvantage even being here. Her magic was stolen from her by the Rebel Gods. Or has it?

In Book One, Linsey revealed the cast of characters for this series, most of whom we other have already met. But there are a few new ones. The Menacing Menagerie(MM), Rowan’s side-kicks, raccoon Romeo, badger Eloise, and possum Poppy, kick butt trio of magical animals that seem to just show up just when Rowan needs them most! You really do need to go back and read just how this group got together! But most of all there is Maximus, Gladiator Mage Extraordinaire! He was introduced as Rowan’s trainer, but he seems to be her other half, knowing just what to do when Rowan is at her weakest. It doesn’t hurt the there is some strong romantic attraction there, Oh Mama, those eyes! Swoon!

The gist of this book is centered around Rowan, Maximus and MM taking part in the Intermagic Games, with Bree, Ana and many others from Linsey’s books taking part. The Order of Magica has asked the Undercover Protectorate to send 2 of their group to the games as participants. As Rowan and Maximus follow the subtle clues, while battling other ghouls, demons, witches, fae, shifters etc, while also trying to stay alive, to get penultimate prize, people dies, and crazy stuff happens! I will tell you there is more between Rowan and Maximus…but nope not saying what!

While I am not telling what this prize is or detailing any events, I must warn you! To get the full story, you really need to go back and start at Book 1. Linsey’s series are so much more interesting if you know the back story. I highly encourage you to go back and read the entire Dragons Gift books. This will help fill in any gaps in your education about Bree, Ana, Connor, Hedy etc…. The only problem I have with Linsey is she leaves you wanting to know more about the Dragons Gift universe and she can only write one book at a time DARN! Write faster Linsey, write faster!
I was given an ARC , but the Review is freely given and all mine!

Given how many books we’ve gone through so far, and how much action there is in them, the race makes a nice way to create whole new surreal situations and obstacles for our heroes to face. There’s a witch’s house full of literary references and monsters (Sherlock Holmes’s ghost, Dracula, etc.), a Cinderella’s Ball to attend (and not get tossed out of!), and a gladiator ring in which to face off against competitors and demons alike (that’s bound to bring up some bad memories for Maximus). I just about had flashbacks when one of the dancers at the ball nearly bit Rowan’s head off for accidentally bumping into her; I swear I met that woman on the bus a couple of weeks ago.

As usual, the representative for the Order of Magica (and the other guy who accompanies him) is a very one-dimensional antagonist. Pretty much all members of the Order we’ve dealt with have only been used as a threat to keep our main characters acting secretive about their powers, and unlike many of the other characters they have little to no depth. Which is a shame, because when she wants to, Hall creates some fun characters, even if they do tend to be a bit formulaic.

Speaking of formulaic, Rowan’s books-so-far seem to be slightly less so, if just because of the darkness that pollutes her (thanks to the things the Rebel Gods did to her in the past). It gives things a slightly darker edge and gives a greater feeling of risk and uncertainty to the development of her powers. Which is to be treasured, because the one thing the formulaic nature of these books takes away is any real feeling of risk and uncertainty. Still, they make excellent comfort reads. You can be sure to enjoy spectacular heroics, a little PG-rated romance, and adorable sidekicks when you pick one up!

I just totally (addictively) binge read Gods of Magic and Hunt for Magic, the first two books of Linsey Hall’s Dragon's Gift: The Amazon series. Here’s the Cliff’s Notes summary: wow (just wow). I totally adored Rowan, demon touched through no fault of her own but still a good person though she needs to hide that she’s filled with dark, deadly magic lest she be locked away with the key thrown out. Maximus, her “leathally sexy gladiator” is also ideally crafted. Add in two fantastic - and well written - plots (which I’m not going to summarize as the publisher’s blurb does a good job without spoiling anything) filled with action, thrills, adventure, danger, a hint of romance to be (thanks Maximus) and a dash of comedy (courtesy of three great animal sidekicks Romeo the raccoon, Poppy the possum and Eloise the badger), and a fantastic supporting cast, and it’s no wonder I was so actively sucked in. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - each of these books definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that each book is most definitely “one to read”, and it is easy to highly recommend both of them. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

So Rowan and Maximus team up and enter the Intermagic Games as representatives of the Protectorate. 4 teams, each comprised of two magical people from different schools all competing to win the games and get the prize. Not an original concept by any means, but Linsey made it entertaining with 2 fae, 2 illusionists and two wolf shifters competing along side Rowan and Maximus. The settings were original, a haunted house, Cinderella's ball and a final showdown in the gladiator ring in the Colosseum. There were funny bits like when they met Sherlock Holmes or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or even when the met Dracula. Rowan discovers new powers, including one that she needs to hide but can't because it was caught on camera and broadcast to the entire magical world. A power that could find her locked away because the Order doesn't allow beings with death powers to wall around free. When confronted, she claims it was a potion and her friends quickly set about trying to create one to get her off the hook.

This my 17th book which included the entire original sister's books in addition to the Death Valley trio. The plots are pretty much interchangeable and the characters more or less fitting the same molds. Character backgrounds are somewhat under developed but enough to maintain continuity from book to book.

Don’t get me wrong, they are entertaining enough for a light and quick read, much like those old Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys mysteries. There is a minimum investment in the characters and individual storylines and at times you do experience frustration at the immature plot twists.

However, with that said, the books do fit a niche that appeals to certain people. After the next book, I think my interest in this writer’s future writings will have waned to the point of non-interest. I do wish her success in the future. The gods know just getting published is an accomplishment in itself.

Roland and Maximus fights through the inter magic Olympics to win

Rolling and Maximus have to survive the intermagical games in order to receive the truth teller they need. There is all kinds of deadly danger in these games and competitors are just as deadly as the challenges. They have to succeed to prevent the evil witches from gathering the truth teller. The other contestants are after them as well and try to steal the clues from them. The clues will lead them to the truth teller Rowan and Maximus versus the games and the contestants. There are two fae, two wolf shifters and two illusionists they must defeat. It becomes a harrowing test of skills to do so. Plus the evil witches are still out to get them in the final confrontation.

I’ve again reached a point in a series I’m not sure what to say. This book is exactly what I’ve come to expect from this author: great writing, fun plots, non-stop adventure, and even a great romance. This one was a little different as Rowan and Maximus has to win a game to get a prize to help them find the witches (see book one). We find out which Dragon God’s powers Rowan has in this one and it’s a doozy. I really loved this book, and if you’re a fan of this author, you will too. If you haven’t read her, you need to fix that today. I highly recommend this fun book! I received a complimentary copy of this, and I voluntarily left a review.

This was an amusing and fun read. You can't help but like Rowan and her fortitude. She faces her challenges straight on, rising above her black magic. And, fights with a skill and a drive, most people don't possess. You have to laugh when Rowan is confronted with a haunted house and Cinderella's ball. You have to cheer, when Rowan stops to help the others, even when it allows another team to move ahead. And, in the end Rowan not only rises above it all, she learns who her dragon god is. Its a story that brings the three sisters closer together. Allowing Rowan to lead without magic and come out ahead.

This series is wonderful

I have read all of Linsey Hall's series starting with the "Fire Souls Series". The action, adventure and creatures they fight is so much fun to read. This series follows Rowen and she is the sister that was kidnapped when she was young. Her sisters Ana and Bree stories have already been told. I highly recommend starting at the very first series and reading from there as all the books related back to the Fire Souls. Each book tells a sister's story and the animals that they inherit along with their powers. As well as the man they will finally be with. Slight romance in all these books and no sex. Though there are thoughts of it.

So here's what in this book, lot of action, intriguing story line and a little of romance to complete the plot.
Here in the second book of this series, you will get front row seat into the growing romance of Rowan and Maximus, and guys it so sweet and adorably awkward. The sister trio is amazing as always, having each others back throughout the story.
The Villains were interesting and it always gets good when you the villains have a mind of their own and are intelligent.
So overall, you should give it a go and you won't be dissapointed if you like stories with a lot of action, a good storyline accompanied with a little romance.

The great adventure continues, Rowan is getting her new dragon god powers one by one as she and Maximus head to take part in a deadly game that could cost them both of their lives, let's hope winners are grinners at the end of this wild ride.

Rowan is still struggling with new powers, mourning what she lost when she was being held captive and on top of that, her feelings for Maximus are confusing her with this strong connection that she is not sure she can trust.

Another brilliant fast-paced adventure.

Thrilling

Hunt for magic keeps you on the edge of your seat and doesn't let up in any way.....the sexual tension, the threat of danger, discovery, more right scenes than you can shame a stick at ! Rowan is a complex character who just keeps growing in complexity, just when you think you've got it figured you learn you've not
The end of this book is just enormous, nothing that your imagination would have come up with
Have to congratulate the author on such a great book, thanks Linsey for all of your hard work and your imagination

2.5 stars. I read these all back to back while not feeling well so one review and one rating for all.

Why 2.5? Man, I get that these stories are hero quests but, come on, this was just one challenge after another and another after another after another. The love interest had no drama - basically a nice hottie which is fine but not very interesting.

There are more books in the overall world that Hall has created but I'll be taking a break for now. Maybe they'll be more refreshing after a step away.

Another utterly fantastic journey in this 2nd book as Rowen tries to discover her magic. Maximus needs Rowena help in the Intergalactic games and he assists Rowen as she helps to kill monsters. Ms. Hall improves on each book. Her sisters, characters from previous books come to help. The book finishes with a HFN. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading the next book in this wonderful set.

Wow!

Rowan's powers don't seem to be coming to her in a way anything like her sisters. Other than her water power, she keeps feeling they are more dark magic than light. Even when she learns which Dragon God she is, she's more shocked than anything. And this competition! It's supposed to be students, yet it is really stacked against them, with constant statements of expectations of deaths among the competitors? Not!

Like this author, like this series...

But, I feel like it's the same storyline. First we had the Fire Souls-3 girls, 5 books each-meet dreamy, over 6 ft super magical/powerful guy in first chapter but can't be with him for some reason until book 3, then save the world.
Next came the Dragon God sisters-3 girls, 5 books each-read above!
I enjoy the books and obviously, I keep reading them but just be aware-no variety to these storylines.

Utterly brilliant!

I've missed these characters and am happy to find them once more 😁
As Ana and Bree's sister is returned to the Protectorate Academy, she relying on her abilities with potion making to get by. She discovers her kidnappers have imbued her with dark magic which she is desperate to conceal from everyone. Then she is entered in the Magical Games with a demigod gladiator.

Better

That was better. The first one hit me as cartoonish as you yourself said. It didn't hold together. But I enjoy your work so I kept reading. This had parts that seemed out there but it worked you pulled it together and it was a fun read. Who is to say what you can and cannot do. A bit good ball but go for it. It's your story Thanks

Fabulous!

Another excellent adventure from Linsey Hall. My only complaint is the books are just too short. I am seriously looking forward to the next adventure with Rowan. Major adventure, plenty of action and suspense with a light coating of romance.. You won't be able to put it down once you start reading

Amazing!

Omg! I've enjoyed this book from start to finish I'm too excited to sleep even though its late, I can't wait for Rowen's next installment. This book is fast placed from the very beginning, with surprise after surprise, and this book I sense is only going to lead to better one's. No spoilers but a strong recommendation!

Amazing story of magic and nonstop action.

Lindsey Hall has created another tale of magic, overcoming obstacles, and exciting twists and turns. Rowan is a badass heroine who knows how to fight and who is pure in her wish to help others. I cannot wait to learn more about her magic. This is my favorite story yet!
